Does anyone out there know,how we started calling $1.00 that..or "Saw Buck"=$10.00...?????? Penny?= 1 cent, Nickel?= 5 cents, Dime?= 10 cents
"Buck" = $1.00
The term Buck refers to "Buckskins" or "Buck hides" that were used as a commidity in trading.
SawBuck refers to the fact that on the Ten dollar bill the Roman numeral X appeared on the reverse side. That brought to mind of the crossed legs on the sawyers sawhorse or sawbuck.
Another usless bit of trivia the term "dough" comes from a humorous explanation thet everybody "kneads" it.
Thank you Paul, I new someone would know this...thanks. I love the dough part. lol :)
Our one dollar coin is termed a "Loonie" This is a relatively new term as the lonnie has only been around 15 years or so. Our Loonie does have a picture of a Loon on it hence the name. Shortly after the introduction of the Loonie they came out with a two dollar coin that was quickly termed a "Twoonie" and that has stuck nation wide as well.
I'm sure that in 50 years when the Loonie no longer has the picture of a loon on it, people will wonder what on earth posessed us to call it that. :)
Louisa might be able to answer the penny part bc I'm thinking it has something to do with one pence, two pence, etc. from the British. I do have some interesting trivia as far as penny though from DH. A 4 penny nail is called that bc in the old days, you could get 100 of that size for 4 pennies. A 6 penny nail was that size and 100 for 6 pennies and so on for 8 penny, etc. Just some more useless trivia :-) vic
The penny and the one cent thing. A penny is 1 perCENT of a dollar hence the cent.
Paul
I love to read about Useless Triva. Iwould be a good contestant on Jepoardy, or The Weakest Link. Ha I would probably choke on the first question.
Paul
My DH loves Triva too..But this just came up and we wondered
First Nickel was made of nickel?????? that is our guess....? and a guess it is...He still has a good working brain....Not I....keep this going, love it with other country's too...Thanks Gwydion, I would never have known that, about Canada...just across the river from Us.....oops just down and across the lake a little...Been there with hockey, when our son played...
I love all kinds of trivia. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one here that does. :o)
