I turned my back to gab, er, visit with some friends, and the membership zoomed past 6500. It's been that way all week, people coming in droves.

are u surprise? with the close knit family atmosphere who would not be attracted to come and test the water. then they get hooked!!! btw, are u aware all posting we do here is on the google.com? that i know for a fact whenever i do searching. now u know =). LOL
Are we famous yet? Maybe a talent scout for SNL will spot us, or Good Morning, America.
Wait a minute, I thought only opening posts or something really limited was open to non-members. You mean they can watch us cutting up and not be members?
so far whenever i do a search, i will always find a page referred to DG, which is the reason why i think we get to be known to the public. ask Dave, he know better than i do. i can only speak for what i've noticed whenever i do search. perhaps from here on in... i will also add the google search i find. that way everyone will see if the referals to DG's forum. see what happens when one inquired about certain plant, albeit common or Latin name, it shows the thread mentioning the plant being sought after.
Guess we better watch our mouths. Oh, well, they will figure out we're harmless soon enough.
nothing to worry about. we do not have nothing to hide, so why be concerned.
Well, sometimes we might get a little risque, by some standards.
i know what u mean. i notice that on some threads too. my puter is acting up! i had to reboot twice now. been fun. i think i will shut down for the night. good morning dear friend. see yah!
Nitey nite, MVR, I'm about to do the same thing.
am back Aimée, where are u? don't forget today is Jianhua's natal day. ttyl.
A note about our postings being found via Google. At least this is how I *think* it works:
Our site is indexed by Google; however, if you are not a subscriber (and logged in), when you click on the link, you'll only see the first post in a thread. I almost never log off DG unless I am needing to see how a feature or page looks to a non-subscriber/non-member.
A couple nice things I've seen this week when I'm out browsing around:
Our plants database has become "PlantsDatabase.com" to some frequent users. One bulletin board had a post where they were RAVING about the completeness of the database - to one of them, it was THE database to use :)
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildlflower center uses our database as a resource tool, per a spokesperson for them.
Many of the businesses who are listed in the GWD now have links to DG on their sites, including Johnny's Seed, Baker Creek, and several others.
Garden Gate (not the print magazine, but the online one at Prairie Net) has a link to the GWD in their "holding bed". Fine Gardening online (Taunton Press) has just added DG to their links of gardening sites.
So yes, Aimee we are becoming famous (infamous? notorious? something!) Pretty neat, huh?
Hey, Go_Vols! GREAT response information you have posted above! Glad to see all y'all here are doing such a good job. (I don't think I have added anything to the PlantsDatabase, and just 1 or 2 to the GWD, so I say "y'all". Keep up the good work!
i noticed that too Vols =). thank u for clearing up the air.
Wooooo-hooooo! That's great to know, Terry!
Mmmmmm... I'm a bit confused about the plant database on our site. Is there a quick way to search it that I haven't found? I usually go to search (the search from my personal menu) and then type in the name of the plant for which I'm looking. This returns forum posts usually.
I think I must be missing a REALLY easy way to search our plants' database. Please let me know my ignorance as I've been thinking that I'm usually pretty intuitive about these types of things.
Thanks!
Morph:
If you go to the top of this page as well as most pages, you will see on the right hand side of your screen a box that says DG Network. Second one down is Plants Database. If you click on that, it will take you directly to a screen where you can search only the database for plants. Hope this is what you were looking for.
Yep, that's it! I've been using the "Search DG" from the right sidebar all this time & getting so frustrated! Now, I'll be able to look plants up in a jiffy instead of searching Google for what I need. Thanks for the tip, JoanJ! Hate to admit that I'm a programmer, too! What can you say ~ just user error!
Glad that I could help Morph. I use the plants database a lot. The really cool thing is now you can search by your zone, so you don't have to wade through all the really neat plants that you can't grow. I love the zone search feature.
