Plant Propagation Discussions - Sept 2019

Fort Worth, TX

I have inside pics of the greenhouse. Outside needs a paint job. it's not a fancy one, it's not all glass or plastic but with my dogs, our wind and hail, it's what I need

Framed with 2x4, 1/2 inch plywood, the roof was originally the clear fiberglass, but after losing 2 roofs since built in 2012, this time it is the heavier opaque corrugated roofing material from Home Depot, as of this october. With an inner roof of 3/4 inch light colored light reflecting styrofoam, to hold heat out in summer and heat in in winter.
Attached to the back of my garage, my dryer vents into it. Large windows were destined for the dump at one of my customer's I asked and he said I could put them on my truck. Big wide on top, and the clear fiberglass blow it on the west side, south side has a pair of large windows and about 10 inches of plywood between, as we had to frame them in, dual windows on the east side. I spent about the same as a cheap greenhouse from Harbor Freight but the survival has been pretty good. I'll get some outside pics later. And I picked up a functional screen door with no hinges at Restore (habitat's resale shop) for $30

What a great idea with the dryer vent, mine is on a narrow side of our house, unfortunately. That corrugated roofing is what my hubs was saying he'd make the roof out of. I wish they didn't close the Habitat's Restore here, I would find good stuff there.

I love Restore. The Fort Worth one is surrounded by older neighborhoods being gentrified, so I can pick up antique doors there for $20 that run $100 at a vintage shop.

I would enjoy a store like that also

Gypsi plants look happy , seems the GH is nice and functional .

Our restore was next to a Sam's, also in an older neighborhood, but Sam's closed down and shortly after the Restore did too, the whole shopping center on that corner is empty now. They say it might be an Amazon distributor center eventually.

I think my son furnished his first apartment from that store. They had better furniture in there than I have in my house...LOL.

they have fabulous stuff. So far ours is open I need to go visit soon... Maybe today. I need to replace a window sill, wonder if they have a craftsman home piece of wood for it

Making my seed lists for Jan /Feb seedlings. Now if they only had seed starting mix at the HD/Lowes...I keep promising myself I will save it for next Spring and I always use everything I get, sigh...had to water today- barely got 1/8" drizzle all day yesterday. At least I had what I caught to water with, chuckl...

I threw a hose under my pine trees on Thursday, as I knew I'd be too busy and we're pushing drought. I might have gotten 1/8 of an inch of rain but I truly doubt it. Have a house full of kids til the 25th or thereabouts, so may not be on much

You do good to have pines where you are Gypsi, they don't have enough iron up there to grow well. Ours handle the drouth, we have humidity if no rain. I spent the day playing assistant to my son in law while he laid wood on his new deck, I have done more stretching today than in the last 4 weeks, groan. I also discovered I am so weak I couldn't hold the screw steady while trying to drill it into the wood. Has me seriously irritated...when did I lose THAT ability, sigh. Small fire to burn ends and pieces was nice. Be cooking tomorrow, BUT! my daughter is supposed to have a normal day at work tomorro instead of an 8 hr shift turning into 12 and 15 hours...with no overtime. Got me scratchin my head on that one...

I just lost a great post. Trying to use another window to look up a scientific name for the mum. Well back to it, now that pics are up. I was trying to identify my chrysanthemum species, got a cutting of this a couple of years ago,the big plant is still blooming despite having been thru the 25 degree freeze (or colder) in late october. The smaller plant, closer bloom, is one of the cuttings I took in September, potted and put in the greenhouse during the freeze. You can see not quite red, not quite orange, single bloom.

Eldarica pine trees grow here. I planted 2 in Arlington in 1992, ex hasn't watered, at least one is still alive. I planted 2 here in spring 2002, one fell over in rain that first year, got propped up, is short and twisted and in front of the big one. The big one has a double leader which will eventually kill the tree, but since it's 18 and I think they only live to 30, and since I discovered the split late in its development, I'm not going to cut off one side and wreck my tree. It's just going to be natural.

my poor cactus is still alive, struggling but still alive after its potting accident. (burying way too much plant and watering, worst yet)

I got what I asked for at Christmas- my granddaughter sewed me an apron- then we all chipped in and bought her a very high dollar sewing/quilting machine that programs. She is so totally happy with it, chuckl. I am trying to get some plants switched from water to dirt, but having issues with supplies locally- maybe after the holiday I can find what I need...
A belated Merry Christmas to everyone, and may New Years also be a good day!

Seeds ordered, rubbing my hands fast to warm my cold fingers, beds are refilled with dirt, the old Celosia cockscomb plant has the seeds fluffed out and stored, I am eyeballing digging a few oxblood lilies if the Crepe Myrtle roots will allow it...almost time to trim some bushes for summertime weather. Chilly outside, but the sun feels so good.

It's sunny but chilly here, last grandchild returned to her home this morning. I need a nap

Milked a couple of goats this weekend, while Bailey managed the gate to be sure no horses or goats got loose. She enjoyed her work

By hand or with milkers Gypsi? By the way, good job if they let you do that- our cows always went to nerves with strangers in the barn...

Sorry I missed wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, but here to wish you all a Happy New year. !!!!

By hand Kitt. I had to go 2 handed on Hasi, she was so full and so impatient. I didn't get that much in the pail, but I kept her from getting sick or losing her milk while Stephanie was gone. I did manage to get enough for part of a jar on sunday. Saturday we stayed outdoors in the intermediate pen and I just had to squirt it on the ground. But both goats kept their milk and were fine and happy to see Stephanie yesterday.

one advantage - the goats know me as the treat lady, when I prune my hackberries I take the leafy branches to them and they adore hackberry. They also are very fond of acorns and carrots, had stephanie leave me some carrots, they make a good lure to get the goat where I want her.

Happy New Year everyone.

Happy New Year all. We are past the shortest day. It's all down hill now to the next growing season. Just a little longer hill for some of us.

Love Mingles grinning face, great dreams.

Keith can hardly wait to see the coop completed, trust climate holds our for you.

Gypsi, delightful kitties, I had a Maine Coon when growing up, moved across nation twice with us, lived 17 years. Our little dim Izzy is just 12 pounds, she's around nine, the young men turned 11 on July fourth.
