jpg vs. bmp

why doesnt dg support .bmp photos? i have quite a few that i cant post because they are in bmp form. just curious

MSJen I would say its because they are so big and take up to much space. BMP files are usually hugh files.

when there was no digital camera here in the house, i used to use a regular camera. the film i had in the regular camera, i have WalMart process either in a diskette or cd disk. when i get back the processed pic plus the cd or diskette, it comes with a Microsoft software to edit the pic. thaat software regardless of how the pic was process, can be converted into a jpg photos. just a thought that may can help u transform bmp to jpg. others might have other ideas too? ma vie

I thought Dave recently did some programming so that we can post photos regardless of type (jpg or bmp). You might try it and see...

I think he made it to take jpg or gif................bmp is way too big in format. there are allot of free picture software downloads on the net though that you could use to turn your bmp files into jpg files.

The only 3 supported graphics on DG are PNG, GIF, and JPG.

I made a very conscious decision not to support bitmap (BMP) for 3 reasons:

1. It is a Microsoft proprietary format.

Because of #1:

2. I have very limited capabilities on my server with bmp.

and number 3: Bitmap files are absolutely massive. They take up about 10 times more space (and bandwidth) than jpg or gif. It just doesn't make sense to have pictures that are over a megabyte in size. The member can convert that down to a tidy 50K jpg before uploading.

There are lots of shareware programs out there that will do this.

I hate bmp!! Ughh.... hate it hatehatehatehate......... Jpg is nice, but sometimes it's best to use tif or targa for good pics..

Oh, we can upload png files, also? cool...

I JUST WISH I KNEW HOW TO DO ANY OF THAT! I THINK I NEED HELP!

What should you do then..? Convert bmp's into jpg's?
