Looking for pecans?

southeast, NE

When my mother-in-law was alive she always received a plastic round container full of pecans from a relative of her husband (my dh's stepfather who is also deceased). She would always share them with me and they were the best for making pecan pies, etc. They tasted so much better and fresher than what I buy in the grocery store. I am pretty sure they came from somewhere in Arkansas. Does anybody know what I'm talking about and if there is a mail order place for these? Thanks!

I would like to find fresh pecans as well. I just paid $6.99 for a 2 pound bag.

Tucker Pecan Company in Montgomery has awesome pecans, but don't know what all services they provide.

They accidently mailed 2 lbs to us last year (to the former owners of our house) and I called to tell them that we'd received them in error. They told me to enjoy them as a thanks for my honesty. :) THAT'S customer service. :)

Thanks Smiln. Do they have an email address or toll-free number by any chance?

The Priester Pecan Co. in Fort Deposit Al. also has very good pecans. It is listd on the link that smilin32 provided. I have a pecan pie recipe from them, The recipe is not as sweet as some recipes are. I'll email it to anyone interested. Jim

Have already received some pecans. Some where sent to me by a dear gardening angel friend. I got 10lbs worth which should last me a day or two anyway.Heehee.(Well maybe alittle longer than that.) I bagged them up and put in freezer. I use alot of pecans so I'm sure they won't last 6 months.Going to enjoy em while I have em tho.

Jim,please do send me the pecan pie recipe. I have one that I use but maybe yous will be different and always like to try different recipes. I have cut the sweetness out of my recipe by using half dark syrup and half light syrup and that helped alot. By using all light syrup, it's too sweet and by using all dark syrup,it makes the pie too dark;so decided to use half light and half dark. Tastes much better that way.

I get fresh pecans, and other nuts, from 'the pecan truck' which parks in my local grocery store this time of year. Unfortunately, I pay about $5 a pound for fresh shelled pecans (and others) but worth it for fresh nuts. I know my mother bought fresh shelled pecans on her way up to NC before Thanksgiving, somewhere in South GA. for about $2.00-$3.00/pound. Wish I knew where.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

WOW I wish I had 3-5.00 for every pound that I have given away! LOL

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Molly how much do you pay a lb. for someone to pick up? And how often do you check the sack for rocks? LOL

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

LOL Jim, So far I haven't let anyone pick up their own...me and the boys get them picked up just to keep the crows from getting them. but I have just been giving them away by the bags full because I am sick of seeing them in my kitchen and I don't have a big freezer so I only keep about 1 or 2 gal bags at a time... and I still have more to come! the trees are loaded and you can only eat soo many pies LOL I have never charged anyone for them though, just wouldn't feel right about it!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

well Molly I was going to trade you a calendar for some pecans. But I guess you don't want a calendar. LOL
CoCo you have mail. I have always wanted to post that. That is the first time. It felt good!!!!!

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Jim I really would like the calendar...but sending you the pecans thru the mail would be about 8.-10.00 and Having 3 boys here at Christmas time, well the money is tight!! Maybe after the holidays??? Let me know

GRC; thought you was going to send me the recipe. I haven't received it yet for the pecan pie.
MollyBee; I just received 10 pounds in the mail and the postage was just over $11.00 which I was willing to pay, plus the cost of the pecans cause I wanted them that bad. It was still cheaper than paying $6.00 for 2 pounds. I think the pecans that I received where 70 cents a pound and then another 30 cent per pound to have them cracked. I still think that I done good considering the amount of pecans that I use in my baking. Hope to get more next year. I do know that this 10 pounds will not last me long. They will probably be gone within 6 months. But if you want to sell yours, this will give you some idea on what to charge. But if you have that many pecans; I sure would.

Longview, TX

Did you check the classifieds in your local paper? Thrifty Nickel? We have them listed here for sale, and fresh. Id try that before having them shipped.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Thanks CoCo I will keep that in mind! Sounds like you did get a good deal being as they were already cracked when you got them. I don't think I could send them already cracked, I would just leave that up to the PO to throw them around enough to crack a few in the shipping LOL

Mollybee, How far are you from Montgomery, AL? :) I might come over and beg on your front door step for pecans. :)

I just bought some pecans yesterday. Our local Christian children's adoption/foster care organization sells pecans for $7.00 a pound (shelled) to raise money. I wrote out a check for $10.00 just because I know they aren't getting a lot of money with the economy being what it is.

All this talk about nuts is making me hungry.

Thanks all for the info. The little angel also sent me a box and they are wonderful.

I too am always on the lookout for a delicious "tried and true" pecan pie recipe.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Co Co did you get the recipe?

No I haven't GRC.

Went back and doubled checked. No,the only that I have gotten from you was the reply back about Charlie Daniels. That was it.
