84 years ago, 6th of December, Finland became and Independent country. We had always been a buffering zone in wars or a part of Sweden, or Russia. In year 1806, when French closed all trading to Britain - Sweden was still trading with Britain and that Frenchmen didn't like. They made a deal in Tilsit with Russians - "Capture Sweden and stop all trading with Britain there". And so, when Finland was in the Eastern side, russians came here. They took Finland, and so till year 1917 we were part of Russia. Anyway they tried to get us back, but we didn't want to belong to Russia, or Sweden neither - we wanted to be free. And now we are. And anyone is not going to take it from us. I'm proud of my country, and so are others here as well. People in countries, which have always been independent, may not know what it would be feel to belong to something else.
Good 84th year of Independence Finland!

Independence
wow, very cool evert. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your celebration!!!
Thank you Evert, a very interesting piece of history you have shared with us.
I should imagine most countries have 'belonged' to other countries at one stage or another, said Baa, speaking from one of the biggest empire building countries in the world. Even so, England has belonged to other countries and peoples in the past too and we appreciate our reletive freedom.
Happy Independance Day for the 6th and may you remain free forever.
Happy Independence Day Evert!
Evert, Happy Independence day :)
What do you do to celebrate?
for our indepence day, we have picnics all day, parades with our flag waving proudly. and at night we have a great display of fireworks. How do you celebrate?
'Party on, Evert!
Oscarsdotter :-)
That's great Evert! I am so impressed with you. I wish my son was half as interested in all the things you are. You are a very knowledgable young man. You'll go far in life.
Happy Independence Day Evert :)
:) Independence Day! Does schools and offices close for the occasion?
Happy Independence Day! Will there be fireworks and parades? Have a great time and continue the pride you have for your country. It is great to hear people who love their countries as much as I love mine!
Thanks all
Yes, I don't have school today..
As you know, it's winter here, snow and everything, so we ususlly can't have any picnics or parades, but there is some fireworks around the country.
Anyway, my mum and dad went to a Independence Day Concert =)
Baa, what countreis has England belonged to? I think many countreis have belonged to Britain, like Canada, Guyana, Malta, Cyprus, and countries around the world ;)
Great Britain was invaded by the Celts from the Indeo-European and southern Russia regions who killed the majority of the settled peoples who lived here.
The Romans invaded (several times over 100 years but hit lucky on the last one) and so we belonged to the Roman Empire for 400 years.
The Saxons, Angles and Jutes invaded when the Romans left (through the greed and stupidity of the Kings at the time) shoving the British Romano-Celts to Wales, Wealas in Anglo-Saxon tongue means foreigners and its is where the name Wales and Welsh comes from. The name England comes from the Angle tribe.
After that the Normans invaded and we became part of France/Normandy, they tried to make the Anglo-Saxons (English) speak french but they refused so the Normans had to learn English. The Norman ruling families argued so much that Great Britain became independant again, on no specific date or consensus, and then claimed France by marriage of two ruling families. This was all in the middle ages.
The British have since been embroiled in almost constant wars to prevent losing our independance it is dizzying.
Happy Independence Day Evert' Exciting isn't it?
Our community celebrated our countries bicentenial back in 1986' We had a parade, refurbished our water tower, put up booths for games/crafts held an auction, ice cream social, cake walks and a giant cookout at our ballfield' We even had the "Ugliest Pickup Truck Contest",lol' After night fell, the fireworks at the park began and we had a big dance at the old schoolhouse, with a live band'
I'm thrilled you are here at the garden Evert to share your countries'Independence Day with us' However you choose to celebrate is wonderful, snow and all, lol, enjoy' How proud you are of your country and letting us all share it with you' Thank you' Sis':)
