Weeping Cherry tree bug damage. PLEASE help!

Braceville, IL

This is my daughters 3 year old weeping cherry tree. It's extremely sentimental to her as it was planted in honor of a child she lost. She's freaking out, but I told her you experts here can help. There are little holes in the leaves. She sees tiny ants crawling up and down the trunk and they are crawling around on the leaves as well. We are in zone 5 Illinois if that helps. Any suggestions of what is causing the damage or what she should do would be GREATLY appreciated. If it's the ants, what should she do?

This does not look to me like any serious damage that you need worry about, The cause of the small holes is anybody's guess - if it's an insect, you'd have to be lucky enough to catch it in the act. The ants likely are in search of honeydew-secreting insects for a quick snack; they would not be causing any damage. You might also try posting on the plant disease forum.
