Hi,
I was out hanging the washing the other day when I discovered the remains of these unusual and large pincered insects on the concrete and nearly stepped on them. They slightly unnerved me as I haven't seen anything like them before, and although I love insects, the big pincers took me aback.
I have baby kookaburras that have newly fledged and I think that the parents possibly could have fed the rest of these insects to them as they have been collecting a menagerie of scaled, winged and furry critters from my and surrounding yards.
Anyway, I was wondering what sort of insect it was and/ or any information on them or their species.
TIA,
Tara
Unusual Insect I.D. (AUS)
This is the front end of a large long-horned wood-boring beetle (family Cerambycidae). I would be very hesitant of making a specific i.d. from this image, but here is one possibility - http://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:biodiversity.org.au:afd.taxon:5bacc144-d3fb-49be-8b43-fad1bb374cb8
