Propagation efforts and results ( the basics)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh wow.. if it isn't flooding ... it's drying out... same here right now. no rain for a couple weeks. Watching a yellow cat out back, no collar , is sitting on the bird bath
( maybe drinking?) wow he is a big one. Hope he catches this little black mouse I keep seeing in the patio. LOL I bet he is watching the squirrels, tho. I'm going to have a million oak trees pop up this spring as much as they have been burying.
Wish I had an acre! and a Pond! oh well, I'm good, " thou should not covet " . I am pretty sure that is one of the ten commandments. :D Have a great day and be careful and don't over do it, any of you.

I only have 1/3 of an acre but I maximize the space by eliminating lawn. I have a front yard and a back yard but the 1/6th acre lot only has a grass strip outside the fence for 10 feet to the road. Which needs mowed., lol

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

I used to wish I had more land, but the older I get the more I'm satisfied with what I have ;-).

Debra, I'm always starting new plants with the purple firespike, so usually have some with good roots going, if you ever want to try it again.

Coleus are getting leggy, so going cut back and start rooting some for next spring, will leave the stems with seeds on for now. I have a few favorites that I haven't seen in the nurseries last couple of years.

No grass in my backyard anymore, poor dog has to do her business in the garden, front has a little bit, only takes DH about ten minutes to mow it. Not a big grass fan.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

my kids prefer grass, mow, done, contain the wild at the border of the grass. my plants disrupt the flow, so, that is me and the hedge clippers if the grass forgets its place. old as I am, I could use 40 to 125 acres, but I would be raising a few beeves. Been lopping off the tops of the liriope, it does really good at holding the sand, but creeps into my paperwhite space...
Know its late now, but threw out my ornamental mustard seed. Everything is looking good, but I don't expect to even get a bit of cooler air off the front you guys in Dallas have coming. I have so many hobby chores I have jelling, isn,t funny, so I go rest a bit and cogitate a bit more...

hahaha I HATE grass, but Joe loves it. As long as I am joeswife, I'll always have grass creeping into my gardens, cuz his fav grass is Bermuda. ugh. I see I am not the only one with a ton of seeds. Mine are everywhere!!! I might take you up on that purple, Sherri, but not until spring. I am good to get what I have going out before it freezes again! . Meanwhile- everything is blooming downstairs!

I love grasses, don't get me wrong, I have that tall wild grass that makes tufts on th north fence line. It does not go away easily, tho. I think I get it out and if there is one tiny itty teeny bit of root in the ground it pops back up. ugh. Love the color of that spice bush, Ju.

Love the seeds, not digging mine out til more are ready to save. Waiting patiently on this moonflower seed to ripen, dug up a red firecracker bush, saved 4-5 new rooted starts, these are showing cool weather before dormancy, but in the bed I am refreshing. Last is the chenille plant that grew around the firecracker bush. My daughter is eyeing roundup to remove it again. Every 5-6 yrs she does this, it does return, chuckl. Looks like Debs freezing temps will send me 50's after all, not too bad for Spring weather in Fall. More rain would be good too

didn't know chenille could be a problem, but mine is surrounded by blue mistflower, gregg's I think. My moonflowers suffered an accidental pullup in june and did not return. Maybe next year. going out to do truck window seals. I voted

Gypsi,
You may want to go back into the photo contest tomorrow to see whether your votes have been cancelled. It will be the only fair thing to do. They jumped the gun on the voting by a day and there have been more entries since you voted. I saw that it looked like the voting was open this morning but was busy so ignored it. Then this afternoon I was back on the site and said "what the heck". I voted on 12 categories before dinner then when I went to finish they had woke up, closed the voting and there were more entries. I suspect I will have to go back in and vote over again tomorrow, otherwise it won't be fair to the last minute entries because they were not late. Typically I don't see any apology or explanation from Admin.
Keith

well, you all are a lot more energetic than I am today. we did go to the 1.50 movies, Wind River. It was sad. anyway, Kitt, that seed pod you are waiting on is a Setosa. I thought I sent you an I turbina. I'll send you lots of cool mg seeds in late winter to start inside. Here is lav moon vine and then the setosa for comparison..the seeds look almost the same, but the moon vine is open at night, fragrant and the pod is oval not round. the stems are stickery looking, but not as hairy. these close by sunshine. then the setosa is a day opening flower with fig shaped leaves, hairy stems. Round pods that if left to dry complete looks like a wood rose . Hope this helps, and I have the white one too. You are all going to get a collection of my morning glorys- except Keith ( sorry). I did not enter this year. I have entered in years past, but ya know, I just don't tag my pics "contest" or I'd prolly have some good entries. LOL All my pics are on thumb drives.

seeds of lav moon vine are three sided, pointed and shiny, seeds of I setosa are fatter three sided and have a tuft of fur on the edges that comes off when cleaned. Seeds of i tubinata are white or cream colored. the blooms of those are also night bloomers, fragrant and like to climb up to 20 ft. I'll get your night blooms to ya in time for next summer. I have night blooms of as many kinds of flowers as I can around my patio and windows.. Have a great night!

All so beautiful Debra.

Keith, I don't know what happened on the photo contest, went to add some photos yesterday but it wouldn't let me, all I could do was vote for what already was there, luckily I had already put some on.

Only seeds I have are bromeliad seeds, and a few pods on the powder puff bushes...of course tons of acorns.

I did. I voted for and against 7 constitutional amendments. checking out the picture contest

Fort Worth, TX

I got to vote for one flower, accidentally eliminated my 2nd choice, and now, thumbnails won't come up in the other categories. I think constitutional amendments were easier

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL that figures.... I tried to upload an entry when this first started, it didn't take, decided not worth the effort. Glad you voted! ( on the political votes)

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

Too funny Gypsi, I did have problems with just a blank page on some photos, tired to refresh and it just went to the next one
I mostly just enjoyed looking, only voted on a few, but there are some beautiful photos, lots of cute animal shots.

Fort Worth, TX

I only had one blank page, voted on all. Wish I could have found my giant swallowtail to enter. Next year. The bird pics were stunning very hard to narrow down to 3. It was my operation on thumbnails, select that option then click begin. Big time saver. It was fun.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

I. setosa, lavender moonflower. Got it. I notice for me those milky way mg's are tough, they just keep blooming. So is that purple splash - it took forever and babying to get it not to die, but now in this cooler weather it is cranking out 7 or 8 blooms every day. I didn't plant the seeds that were inside the packets, so still have those to create a place for come Spring. There is so much green here- I tend to like the deep colors as they stand out so well. Now that i have the yaupon trimmed back another 15' I will have lots of room for mg's to climb - if I can keep from encouraging the yaupon from getting happy. That I get to plant anything and see it thru a season hasn't been something I could do for maybe 15 yrs. You guys are saving seeds, but I am trying to get all I have planted into growing- I do date my packets, but not usually my beds, chuckl. well, kitten punk says he wants on my keyboard to bite my busy fingers, so I am in retreat....

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

I've tried MG in my garden from gifted seeds a couple times, they start out fine in the spring but always die out, but must be me, because they do grow wild all over FL, even on the beach.
A gardener pal in PA sent me some native Asclepias tuberosa milkweed seeds, I'm going to try cold stratification and plant in peat pots. I've not had luck with Asclepias curassavica milkweed the past couple years, but I direct sowed and probably too warm of winter, although they said no stratification needed. Monarchs been chowing on my milkweeds before they can produce pods the past two years...used to self sow, but winters were colder.

Fort Worth, TX

My cats are awful typists, they just lay behind the keyboard and kick it off the desk.

I got very good results with A Tuberosa refrigerator winter this summer. going to start some more soon. also some green milkweed I gathered seed from this year.

I miss winter. 2 days of woodstove nights, won't need heat again for a week.

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6a)

For the first time I am trying to overwinter my Hot and Mild peppers plants that are
in containers. I cut them back and add leaves at their base for insulation and put them in clear plastic recycle garbage bags and place them on the south side of the house. At Spring time I will see the results.Horay!!

Fort Worth, TX

that could be interesting. Down here they would cook on warm days.

Rain most of the day here , I did a wintersow jug of flat topped aster today , Easy plant but I still have had a time getting them going
I finished up doing a seed trade now I will finish packing a few more and get them to a few other gardeners ,
Always gardening things to do , I never get done , The bees and such enjoy it though
Got lots of Calico and Smooth Blue Aster seeds this year ,Bees will be happy next fall

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

Gypsi, good to know about the A Tuberosa, thanks

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Any time I send out seeds from here that are native to here I ask them to keep them in the fridge for a couple months before planting. Or, to plant now if they are in colder zones. But, in Southern states, plants from Kansas have to "sleep" awhile. I'm keeping a lot of seeds in plastic tubs in the garage. Here is hoping my Kopper King cuttings take.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Too cold here for much , however I too have a couple garage tubs , An older one I have had for years and a new one for gallon bags of seeds ,
Still sorting some seeds and looking through others When my table gets cleared I will pick three or four to start

Winter Springs, FL(Zone 9b)

Debra, that's what I've read even if plant is native here coming from colder climate needs to have that chilly rest.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I guess everyone needs "sleep time" LOL now, on to try to sort out the basement garden again. Oona is quite comfy on her blanket, here.
