christmas spelling.........
Dori,
I had it brought to my attention, too, several years ago that some folks get offended by the abbreviated spelling. I try to be aware of that, but keep in mind that some folks look for things to be upset about. It's not about you. It's about them.
oh dori, I think we all may have made that mistake at one time or another. We learn by our mistakes. I also have made this same mistake so you are not alone in this;for I'm sure there are others. If we never made mistakes,we wouldn't be human.
We learn, and move on, and hope we never make the same mistake twice. :-)
Dori, I used to be really offended by xmas. I thought it was started by people purposely trying to leave Christ out of it. Then someone told me that x was a secret way that persecuted people marked that they were Christians. Don't know if it's true, but I try not to let it bother me anymore, and whenever I see xmas, true or not, I try to think of people who didn't have the freedoms we have to speak openly of what we believe.
Maybe this will help everyone on the word'Christmas' or 'XMas'.
The word "Christmas" means "Mass of Christ," later shortened to "Christ-Mass." The even shorter form "Xmas" - first used in Europe in the 1500s - is derived from the Greek alphabet, in which X is the first letter of Christ's name: Xristos, therefore "X-Mass."
Today we know that Christ was not born on the 25th of December. The date was chosen to coincide with the pagan Roman celebrations honouring Saturnus (the harvest god) and Mithras (the ancient god of light), a form of sun worship. These celebrations came on or just after the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, to announce that winter is not forever, that life continues, and an invitation to stay in good spirit.
You are most welcome. Glad to be of service.
Apparently the Christmas wreath as we know it was also a symbol of the Roman celebrations. My father told me that Christians placed wreaths on their doors and secretly celebrated Christs birth inside on the 25th to avoid persecution. I have no idea if this is indeed a fact.
Dori,
Please don't even give it another thought. We have to take are rest where we can get it.
I always spell out Christmas. I am quite sure that Christ was born more toward spring because the shepherds were in the fields with their sheep. However, I celebrate His birth on the 25th of December and try to honor Him with my life every day.
Thanks everyone-i was realy bumming about this!
you put my smile back!!!

IMHO don't worry about your spelling of christmas...some people feel the need to be so PC at times and feel they are obliged to correct the world.... i wish we could worry about the big stuff not correct folks who mean no harm....in the big picture it what you feel in your heart and how you keep xmas or christmas year round by showing love and charity to all....that included cutting folks some slack...most people do not mean to offend anyone....in my opinion "christ" would not have gone looking to pick squabbles with anyone over spelling. he took people as they were.
In the 1600's, Christmas was actually outlawed in England because (during the Reformation movement), Christians began to think of Christmas as a pagan celebration.

Back when I was in business and had to keep numerous records of orders for the next season's orders I used the x and certainly not out of disrespect but because it was such a time saver. I certainly wouldn't be offended by it and really think Christ would know the spelling and it's interpertation. If it was written out of hate or with love. He would still love that person the same. Funny how man trys to make rules to please God and God already set forth the rules to please him. I don't remember spelling being in one that I read about in the Bible. Honor yes, but not our interpertation of it. The interpertation belongs to him.
CoCo
you beat me to it. I was gonna tell the same pagan story but was gonna wait until the new year but I will now expand on it.
decorations shouldnt be put up until Christmas eve.
mistletoe should come into the house until the new year. kissing under it gave a man high potency and men can demand a kiss. for every kiss a berry has to be removed. no more kissing can be done when there are no berries left. Druids say it has magical powers. it should never be seen in a church
the tree also represents fertility.
all those candles and other lights are to bring luck for the coming year. if a candle is used and it isnt alight when the family wake they will have no luck in the coming year.
the first person to open the front door on Christmas day will be lucky. further good fortune comes with a dark man arriving at the house but bad luck will come with a woman especially a red-head.
holly berries used to be yellow until the cross was made from holly wood. the berries then turned to red in remembrance of His blood. holly twigs hung in the house will protect all within from witches during the darkest days
when the yule log has burnt any remaing pieces must be kept under the bed until the following Christmas to keep luck inside the house.

There are many things in this world to be offended about, poverty, war, violence etc. Its certainly a privilege to be able to have an open discussion on any matter not just spiritual.
Coco thanks for the post about Saturnalia, in Europe prior to the Christianisation of our continent there were many celebrations at the Winter Soltice, all quite similar. The last of the animals you couldn't feed were killed off and they knew that Spring was just around the corner. In short it was always a festival of thanks to whomsoever they believed was responsible for the sun rising in the morning and other such miracles. Evergreen, shrubby things were the symbol of everlasting life (and isn't that exactly what Christianity teaches?)
Smilin, many forget Englands turbulent religious past (possibly one of the reasons we still don't discuss religion quite so openly), oddly enough we are verging on another crisis in the Church right now.
CoCo, I was wondering if anyone would post that, and you did it so well. I think more people should resign their (self-appointed) positions as monitors of the masses and attend to their flock. There seems to be such an unchristian attitude with all the chest thumping and self-righteousness.
Don't worry about it - life is too short. Have a nice day, or should I say evening!!
Personally I do not care how you spell it so long as my name is on the presents!
nice one Zany, high 5

Couldn't have said it better myself.
