I just came home from Georgia and while i was there i picked some pecans. Now can i shell them and use them or do they need to be dried? I was told i had to dry them in the oven first. If so, for how long and at what temperature?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to use these in my holiday baking.
TIA,
SYR36
P.S. Georgia is one pretty state.... with ALOT of red dirt!!!
tiG HELP!!!
don't oven dry them. At least not until you write Mollybee and find out for sure. Were these on the ground? That would make them ripe and ready. I wish I knew more, sorry, but don't do anything just yet. Find Mollybee in the directory and ask her, she knows for certain.
My DH and I say if you can pick them up off ground and eat right away, that's all you have to do. But we don't grow them.
SingleYellowRose-you have mail *Ü*
Thanks tiG! I saw her post and went ahead and e/mailed her about the pecan's. I am really no expert on the pecans, but I think I did manage to answer her question's though.
The main question was "Did she pick them IN the green shell?
Just because she picked them OFF the tree, wouldn't really mean they were still green, because at this time, our's are all opened up but some are still hanging on to the tree. then everytime we get a good gust of wind...it rain's down pecan's! LOL We have even took long water pipes(dh is a plumber) and stick them way up in the tree and knock them loose, then it really rain's pecan's and boy do they hurt when they hit you in the head! LOL I still have tons that need picking up. I have to make myself NOT look down at the ground when I go out...because there are pecans everywhere!!
Thanks again tiG
can I come to your house and look down???
Hi guys,
It didn't take a pipe to get them outta the tree....my darling B/F climbed the tree and shook away and you are right THEY HURT when you get hit on the head. But for the price of pecans up here in the North... it was worth it specially cause they were free.... and they weren't in the green shell... I didn't take those cause i knew at least those ones weren't ripe....the ones i got the green shell had already split. And these aren't the huge pecans. The ones l got on the smaller ones, but l don't know the name of it.... anyone got a guess?
Thanks for the info.... now to keep the squirrels away...

I can't remember the name right off hand but they are good to eat just a little smaller and mor agravating to crack open. But they eat just as well as the bigger ones. Hope mollybee answered your question for you. Pecans are great for snakes and baking.
