CLOSED: CLOSED: Aphids?

New Windsor, NY

3ish Questions:
- Are these aphids? / What are they? (Inside red highlighted areas)
- If you happen to know, what kind of plant is this? Would it reroot if I put a clipping in water?

** This is an indoor plant in Rochester, NY.

It's weird because the insects seem to be dried out and don't appear to move at all when I touch them (which is why I thought maybe they aren't aphids even though they look like they are). I wonder if it's possible that they all died from being in a cold (unused) house during the winter. Regardless, I am afraid to bring this home and introduce them to my other plants- Wondering if there is a way to start a new plant with a clean branch from this one.

Thanks!

I cannot tell for certain whether or not these are dead, mummified aphids, or possibly mealybugs. Whatever, this does not appear to be a serious infestation. The plant itself looks like a Schefflera (umbrella plant) - see https://www.dirtdoctor.com/garden/Schefflera-Umbrella-Plant_vq1791.htm

It is a Schef.. Could those be hemispheric scale? Aphids cluster. These are randomly strolling like scale. I'm sure you are most interested in treatment. Either take up alcohol swabbing as a hobby or find some imidacloprid product such as Bayer 3 and 1. It will take care of the problem insect regardless. Take outdoors to spray, saturate soil surface and make sure it is after bees have returned to the hive at night.

Schefs don't easily root in water. They do root easily with a little rooting hormone on the cut surface and a light potting mix with plenty of perlite. They release sap when cut which can be irritating to the skin. Wear gloves.

Thanks! That was really helpful!

Where I grew up these become large, multi-trunk monsters requiring regular cutting. When I see tropicals indoors it's like the proverbial ice to Eskimos.
