Morning Glories 2017 #03

Gautier, MS

Thanks Linda and Jackie. That one was easy, actually the envy got wet outside and the seeds germinated when I found them. I just places them in 2 small pots, they where fast to grow and bloom.
A few blooms today. Hope you are feeling better Debra.

Nice blooms Helena. Where did you find the yellow tobacco plant?

Hello everyone! I an new to this forum. I have not grown morning glories before, but this year I will be doing so.

I found that old seeds germinate as easily as new seeds, much to my surprise and do not require nicking them. I just pre-soaked them until they started to sprout, and then sowed them.

In addition to 'Heavenly Blue ', I am growing a white one and a yellow one. I thought for sure that the yellow one would not germinate, but I was wrong. I will share pictures as soon as I see any flowers on them. I have already put the white ones by a fence post and the blue ones in pots, and on the ground (seeing which do better), by an arbor in my enclosed garden area. I will add the yellow ones there as well. I have temporarily placed the yellow ones in cell packs, and as soon as the weather clears up for a few days, I will put them outside. Or should I wait for the weather to actually get warm? Lately the weather has not been over 55°. What do you recommend?

Gautier, MS

Welcome to the forum Evelyn, glad you joined us. It will be nice to see your blooms.
Since you already placed your other mgs outside I think it might be safe to do the same with your last set. Most of my mgs are outside now. The ones that came up as volunteers outside are on the smaller size. The ones I waited till they were 4 inches tall with good roots are doing much better.

Linda, I started my yellow tree tobacco from seeds I bought through mail order. I had quite a few seedlings and plants. I even planted one in the ground last year but the one I kept in my green house is the only one that survived. Just don't know why the one in ground didn't make it. I think you can grow them in Texas. It's a hummer plant.

Helena ~ Since I have started them in the house, and the weather has been so cold and wet, I think I will wait a little while on the yellow ones. I have never seen those before and I really want them to do well. Should I put them on the back porch or will they grow better in the heat of the house?

It rained for most of the day today...not typical CA weather. Right now it is pouring hard. It has been any warmer than 50° in quite some time. Maybe 2 weeks ago, it got up to 60°.

Gautier, MS

Evelyn, you are probably right. I would wait till the rain passes, it seems to make it colder. At least till they start showing some growth. Which of the yellow are you growing?
My first Ipomoea nil from old seed opened today unexpectedly. My mostly purpureas have one or two blooms each also.

Beautiful blooms Helena. Can't wait to see the pumpkin colored ones.

Welcome Evelyn. My mg's don;t do well in the cool and/or cold temps so I would probably keep them in the house a week or two longer until temps warm to 65.
The cool weather slows their growth down for me and the blooms come out tiny. Helena can grow hers in cooler temps than I can

Love your pretty Nil Helena and the purps have nice colors too.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Linda and Jackie. I still need the weather to get warmer for my nils here too.
But I think I might have at least one hige or a feather hopefully tomorrow.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Looking forward to your pretty higes Helena.

Gautier, MS

I was looking forward to seeing 2 labeled higes blooms from an envy but I'm disappointed that one turned out to be a purpurea and the other with feathers. First 3 pics.
The neatest bloom was the next bloom with the wrong color on the pic, it's actually lilac. The blooms are large too.

Helena, love your blooms this morning.
The higes are purpureas and so are the feathered.. It takes the higes a while to completely split. They don;t always start out like that. So just be patient with the blooms, They should finally start making the lovely hige blooms..

The yellow one is I.hederifolia var. lutea.
Yes, it has been cold. This is the first sunny day in quite a while. It was 39° on the front porch when I came downstairs. It seems as though Mother Nature has been making up for our years-long drought by giving us an abundance of rain this year. I hope that the MG's that I already planted outside will be OK.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie. I have no choice but to wait and see. It just seems funny that some start out as higes and others not. I'm not good at being patient. I do have buds on my nils though so I'm waiting on them too.

Yikes, Evelyn 39 is a bit cold and might slow down their germination and growth. I have the little red hederifolia coming up and maybe one or two of the yellow too. The yellows have always been a bit harder for me to grow. Hope yours do ok too.

Gautier, MS

Hope you are doing ok Debra. We miss you. Just to let you know we are thinking of you.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Yes Debra, let us know something when you can.
It could be Helena, that the non higes are just coming from sds
that are unstable. Wish I knew how to cross and back cross to get the
blooms I want.

Good morning ladies and welcome to the Morning glory Group, Evelyn. I am so glad you kept posting those beautiful blooms, girls. The internet was in ICU but I was so drugged up and poor Joe had to learn how to plug in my charger and answer my flip phone. They did a cath, no blockage no stints no balloons needed. I did have a small heart attack and I guess the other incidents i had previously that I thought were anxiety were also heart attacks. I am really in good health, but the years of me doing drugs ( speed, meth, cocaine ( a long long time ago), the added stress of my job, and a blood clot that found it's way to my heart is what he found. One out of 4 arteries has 50% blockage, he thought about broken heart syndrome
( over what they did to me at work) but ruled it out on the third cat scan. ( they did one CATH and three cat scans. xrays shows I have a enlarged aorta and is "tortous" ( I am reading the report). I am 5'5 weigh 133, blood levels are fine . he is treating me with a beta blocker, blood pressure med different than what I was on, and some blood thinner. He wants me to go to a hepatitis dr and get my hep C treated and cured, and he wants me to to to another dr and get my enlarged lymph node addressed in my abdomen, and told me both my implants were "ruptured". so that's it. I am exhausted but will return to work Monday. To look at me you'd think I am the healthiest woman in early 50's but right this moment I defiantly feel older than Moses . LOL ( Sorry) I am home looking wistfully out my window to see my columbine, clematis, bouncing bets, red honeysuckle, and a couple of tulips blooming. I am supposed to be taking it easy. If I go out I'll end up working . Meanwhile, no mg blooms here ... so KEEP POSTING> Linda, thanks for the cake! ( no cake here this year) wish you could see my old fashioned lilac!
love you all..

Gautier, MS

Hope you get some rest Debra and feel better. You have been through a lot, your health is important so hope your get those dr treatments you need. Goodness, I feel for you. Saying prayers, hugs to you.
So far I am mainly getting purpurea blooms, another 1st bloom from a pink hige.

Deb, do follow thru on what your Dr told you to do. this could have been'disastrous.
You;re very lucky Did you think to ask him how much damage your heart took from those heart attacks? If you;re going back to work Monday, be sure and rest all'
weekend. Did your Dr say you could return to work Monday??

Beautiful blooms Helena. I love the dark, C of V bloom and the bloom in the 1st pic.
Pretty pink hige too,.
