Plant Propagation - the Basics, March 2017

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Jen if you saying what I think you are , it is a handling , storage , distortion , most do have leaves that thick and heavy , Crocus might have feathery leaves m some bloom before their leaves open ,

I am not good with bulbs most here rot
1 Floaters are the seeds that germinated turnip greens
2 Stargazer lillium growing out of the , had bunches , last year none returned , try again ,,

so Penstemon has red leaves? something in one of my pots that started from bargain hunting at ace hardware has red leaves and is sprouting. Hmmmm...

put bulbs in pots with dirt here, some are tough enough for the ground but many are not. However my amaryllis has many baby amaryllis surrounding it, and my tazetta narcissus daff and summer snow flakes multiply like weeds

Quote from Jnette :
JU, my sister sent me a planted bunch of bulbs for my birthday a while back. I made the mistake, I think it was, of having them in the house because if was freezing nights. Of course all of a sudden they were several inches high and had fat things I thought were buds. Well, I put them outside to slow them down and how they are about 8 inches high and have leaves. I thought they would bloom before the leaves came out??? I think some are tulips, some crocuses, maybe some daffs, there is an Amaryllis in the middle that shows no sign of life. Can you help me on this? I do not grow bulbs so not a clue. jen

Jen ~ Can you take a picture of these and post it so we can see them? Most bulbs have their leaves come up first and then later flower in spring.

Sometimes red leaves just mean new growth...they turn green after teasing you with hopes of prettyness...

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Lol, nice one Kitt, thanks for the chuckle!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Nice Begonia roots Keith ,, here comes the pretties ,

Katt Dark Towers , Penstemon really does have red leaves , Lot of rain and cloudy weather they will turn green ,,
Did get a couple things done today , the Lily and the Turnip Greens got planted As did some onions
I got this gizmo working , Needs to be more solid , the old (really old spade bit could be sharper , But you hold a tree limb feed it through the cross bar feeder tube (at the bottom of the bucket , or top of the can ? ) it takes the limb to dust faster than cutting a hole in wood , much faster ,
2 The feeder tube needing to be set more solid
3 there was some larger when I started ) this is a from this
4 to this You can also see some of what was as dust left in the bottom of the bucket in pic 1
There are few things I can make better still as to the function , and I will , for now though , it will make mulch

Resembles what I dump out of the vacuum cleaner some days. Probably better for plants than my vacuum cleaner...
Ju, the maples in Frederick, Md were budding. The twigs in Portage, Wis are coloring up now, too. First signs of life for north of you...
I am ALWAYS curious as to what colors in the plants will remain, sigh, even from buds that look one color and turn into something totally different. Hang in there Robin, Spring is trying to sneak up on you up there in Michigan...

interestingly enough I ended up with a blue hosta and a stargazer lily bulb at the grocery store last week. At $2 a piece I will take a chance.

when I am awake I will upload the pic of my red leaf sprout

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Wisconsin has the twigs of small bushes coloring up, so buds will be soon. The maples had buds on them in Md when i left. Wildflowers I am not seeing again this year, just boring grasses surviving...

Fort Worth, TX

the wildflower seed I put out hasn't germinated anywhere I haven't watered. and I put out POUNDS of it.

ok what is the reddish purple one? I never buy ornamental sweet potatoes, so we can count that out, and I grow my sweet potatoes in the garden, not in pots with perennials.
and my dianthus, well that looks to be some phlox I planted and forgot I planted, I have no idea what kind. Or is it phlox?
Strawberries mixed with heartleaf scullcap, in front of azaleas and pink lady Indian hawthorne, the front flower bed is a jumble of perennials, with amaryllis and pink crinum lilies in the center. Rhododendrons back in the corner haven't leafed out much yet, and I just put in a tall aster behind the azaleas (it is supposed to reach 3 feet, here's hoping.
On the other side of the porch my one surviving snapdragon surrounded by poppy seedlings and whatnot.

Wildflowers will pick their own time and conditions to show up, they are hard to coax. Pretties everyone, so pretty.

Gypsi, don't know where it would have come from, but I would swear that purple leaf specimen is a sweet potato vine. I have grown a lot of them and it looks absolutely identical. In our environment it would be pretty much impossible for one to show up in my yard without me putting it there. Can't really relate to yours. Do you have neighbours at all close? If I am remembering correctly was it you or was it Kitt that did have a lot of water flowing through your yard a few months back? Is it possible that a sprig could have floated though from a neighbouring yard and deposited there and rooted. They do reproduce very easily by rooting cuttings. I doubt that birds or critters would carry them in from neighbouring yards. In my experience the purple ones are the only ones that have ever flowered here. Don't know if that could mean that in warmer areas that could result in reproduction by seed?

PS. Just thought of a way to verify. Let it grow a bit and then cut the stem. If it is a sweet potato vine when you cut it it will bleed a thick white milk.

that does indeed look like a sweet potato vine, and I do grow them, the eating kind, but that is a big pot Keith, that I planted with stuff from Ace hardware and plant swaps. Maybe a sprig could have come in. I don't know, may dig it up and have a look

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Not salvia or sage, odd shape for leaf to be not split in two mirror images, but think sweet tater is best guess.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I am digging that thing up and looking at its roots on Friday.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Can't wait to see what ya dig up. Alice. Glad to see everyone in the Spring- y mood. Good going , Keith! love the new gizmo, Ju. I found this "thing" ( about three inches?) the ONE day I got to play outside , brought it in to take a shot and put it back...all the neighbors forsythia's are done, daffs are done, tulips are almost done and now it is cold and rainy again. *sigh*
My real pear tree is now in full bloom, so are the virginia blue bells, the viburnums, crab apples, violets, redbuds, and fancy lonicera. I just get up and drive to work and gaze out in envy that everyone actually gets to see their stuff. Oh and Here is also a ROS for Jen to see that you can have them bloom inside..

Sorry to disappoint you Debra.but not everybody. Had to have one spoil sport. I am still keeping drs appts. Darn it. However, I am going to plant my begonias this week. Keith got me moving I guess by planting his. Also, my ROS is getting huge leaves. Don't know why they are so big, but that is ok. Just have to keep the cats away from them. Going to spray them with Peppermint and see if that helps.

called Sharon today and caught her at the hospital feeding Vern. Told her i would call her tomorrow. Hope everything is ok. Will let you all know.

Getting late., so going to bed. ttyl jen

Jen ~ Please tell Sharon that we are all thinking of her, and that we miss her. It sounds like she has a lot on her hands right now.

Pretty flowers, pretty sky. I am pretty tired. perhaps tomorrow or this weekend I can upload some pictures

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gorgeous pics, looks like you had a great day. We are all thinking of Sharon. It was a bleary day here and too cold to go out. I still need to clean out the north fence and all of the front . If it is anything like to day, tomorrow ( now i guess) I am still not going out. I cut back a lot of the stuff downstairs and personally dragged up the big tub of multi branched brugs and some other big tubs, while no one was here to yipe at me. It felt good, got my heart pounding and I didn't fall back down the stairs while hopping a 100 pound potted plant up the stairs and out to the garage to get used to being cold in front of the big window ut thee, and today I opened the garage door since it was windy, to let them feel the very windy breeze. I'll be working on the biggest tub of snow queen hibiscus tomorrow, before i even attempt to brig her up. she stayed in all last summer cuz no one could get her up, I'll chop her down and pull her out of that tub by the time it is warm enough to get her out for a summer.

I started an April thread. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1440023/

Want to dig up the plant I can't identify but have to feed the bees first.
