Hi all!
I'm a newbie to container gardening, and have eagerly read the various threads and Al's suggestions on ficus cultivation, soil, watering schedules, potting, etc. I really appreciate the time everyone has taken to educate the community. I have just received a ficus religiosa in the mail, and have done nothing but water it so far. I know it's not a good time to repot (1 month before most vigorous growth would be June I think). But I have no clue about the soil type it was sent with (just feels like a potting mix). What would you suggest as my next step to get this plant through the winter? I've attached a picture. I'm guessing I need to get it out of this little plastic container it came in, in a mix heavy in perlite, but is it a safe time to repot?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!
Ficus religiosa question
I wound not repot until late spring - Ficus generally do not need large root space when young.
The real key to keeping this species is heat and high humidity; they are generally poorly suited as houseplants.
Thank you, Vestia. I'm in Tennessee, so I'm hoping it will make it through to spring when I can give it some good warm and humid outdoor time. Although I'm also aware they don't love to be moved. Thanks again!
