Plant Propagation: The Basics Summer 2016

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I plant on keeping this chicory forever.. :) one thing I know is, I prolly had chicory growing before in my gardens form the thousands of seeds I put out, but then dug them up thinking they were giant dandelions, after I did research, I decided to let a couple keep going .. Joe was like why are you growing dandelions in your plant tubs? I showed him the research online. I told him no way am I pulling them out. And now they are about to bloom. So happy!!
Keith, if you would like a start of that iris, let me know, I still have some to dig up back by the Angel Face Rose. ALso, that Carribia rose and the Angel Face rose are the only two hybrids I have left, I did have 8 hybrids, all beautiful. One year of drought and storms took the others down one by one. *sigh* Mrs. Lincoln and double delight were two of my favorites.

Gosh, all of your posts and beautiful flowers and my post didn't even take. I did write here earlier. Now Bob went to bed, said he had a real sore throat and his stomach hurt. Wouldn't eat anything. I gave him some throat spray, but don't know what to do for a bad stomach. Neither one of us is ever sick that way, so don't know what to do for him. Hopefully he will be better in the morning. jen

I was planting more and starting seeds So many of my seeds failed , I am bummed about it , But , move on to tomorrow , plan B ,, and don't let the depressing win ,

Here is the Bellflower after opened , after the rain today ,
I have enough bronze fennel sprouts to plant a field seeds either fail or grow to cover cities ,,

Debra, thanks for the thought, i would love a start of that iris but unfortunately shipping to Canada is an absolute no-no

Oh good grief JU, I cannot find my Bronze Fennel seeds you sent me. I am so worried that I threw them out with something else. I've looked everywhere. That Bellflower is beautiful. Is it the same as the Platycodones? Sure looks the same. But mine always bloomed late in the summer to the point that it wasn't worth planting them.

You said you didn't have good luck with your seeds? Me neither. Just awful. I got maybe a flat or a bit over a flat of Petunias, and a few others, but not many. Don't know why. I am going to give it one more year because my daughter told me what I was doing wrong and I know she is right. So, will try it her way one more year and see if that works any better.

It has been raining so much that I haven't been able to get out and work on my containers until today and then with Bob staining the railing on the living room deck, I had no place to put them so that stopped me too.

Well, going to read a bit ttyl, jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Campanula Perscifolia , Tall Bell flower Jen ,,
read on , back later to you to ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Beautiful Flowers , Ju, My daisys are almost done, and the rain is beating everything down anyways.. *sigh*
Do you know what this is, by any chance? They cut if off at work, it was growing up the outside wall in the parking lot, I have been trying to protect it, but no, someone had to weed whack it, so I have it sitting in a pot of water.. Dug it's roots out, it is now planted in a tub somewhere, now I can't even remember.. and the second set, It tries to grow, I dig it out, it comes back, I wish I knew if it was a wildflower or a wild weed LOL Lillies are starting to pop now.. Ju, I love your meadow rue, I have the yellow rue it is done blooming now.. I heard bronze fennel is good for teas.. I'd be in bed, but it is raining again..

Debra I don't know what the vine is . Thank you about the flowers and the rue ,
I would like the rue better if the blooms lasted longer ,
Nice Lily !!! Mine are budded ,
My milkweed plants at least one yesterday had a bud developing ,
My mindset for working with the plants is a little off the past few days ,
i should slow down a little I keep misplacing seeds and getting pot confused ,

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well shoot, neither of those two NOID's are vines, just very tall multi branched plants.
I was hoping someone would recognize them> Ju, I have never been able to keep track of what I plant and where and in what unless i somehow manage to write it down on something, sometimes even the seed packets have a message for me :P

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra , possibly a small flowering clematis , Something called a starflower vine , I went looking , but still have no idea for sure .. Be interesting to see the blooms ..

it's hot here .!!!

Fort Worth, TX

Debra, I have to diagram my garden each year, and I have a dedicated notebook and I used to number my flowerbeds, then just have a page for bed number and write what is in it.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Gosh Debra, don't have a clue. Why don't you post it on the plant ID thread. They could tell you right away. Don't know. Doesn't even look like a vine to me. just a tall plant. lol, sorry.

However, looks like something that should root fairly easy so the starts you got should do fine.

See the sun is out, thinking that while it is not raining right now I should get out there and at least drain the trays the begonias are sitting in and tip the table enough that the water will flow off of the rest. ttyl,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Another sunny day another iris .. I like it !

Debra when those buds open you will know what it is. I have one that looks much like an echinacea but with a pretty bloom that is a lot of little white florets, it is perennial and looks a lot like yours. How many kinds of echinacea are there? May be a relative. Doesn't look like a vine

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra my I do not Know only will eventually

wow Ju, lots going on there.. Love your babies. Can't wait to see them as they grow. I posted a photo of a different plant I need ID on the Plant ID forum, doesn't look like many get on there or the disease forum, I have some cedar rust all over a shrub I love and am concerned it might spread. The forum for diseases is DEAD atm. *sigh*
the plants i posted here are not vines, they are plants that grow n the wild.. that I know for a fact.. I wish they would have left the one alone against the back wall, it wasn't hurting anything just growing and trying to bloom.. ..I'm letting all weeds grow that might have a bloom except those I know I definitely don't want.
*I Love Weeds* I'm so silly..

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra we could all get together and do a "Love of Weeds" disc ,,
Which would or might be interesting ,
Plants here are starting to cheer me up , much better luck the past few days .
Those seeds in the photo above are germinating very fast , I have 13 more containers planted now, still going

My beneficial nematodes are in the ground, hopefully eating all the chiggers I washed off the weeds before I put them. And the flea larva and ants. Bees are out of the house we were working on. And I have discovered I have a huge surplus of a pale daffodil (see my have list if you would like some - have to make room for a peony)

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Peony are nice , I do not know if they will grow where you are Gypsi Wrong time of year to move bulbs and flowers here ,
Most consider Daffodils and Peony to be landscaping standards here

My milkweed is blooming! I love the ones you sent me, Ju. I also like that first flower bloom. what is it? I finally planted a few peonys, but no blooms this year.

Fort Worth, TX

I had to wait to plant the peonies because of needing a roof. Dug these up last year, been in pots since

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well good luck, I do hope very much you get your peonies settled. I never grew them here because I always took care of my grandmas and got tired of them, but a lady had to sell her homestead, she has cancer, and asked me to save a few of her for her, so I agreed. I am not against sending them away to someone who loves peonies, tho.

Fort Worth, TX

I don't need more, that is for sure, have 6

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I love peonies Debra, but absolutely no room for any more. Don't know if I told you that my Helabore seeds somehow, bird or something, got some down into a couple of my peonies and coming up right in the middle of them. One is even blooming this year. Wonder why, they are about 10 feet from each other and about 20 feet from the mother Helebore. My spellcheck doesn't like the way I spelled that. What is wrong with it? Don't know how, but will try to get pictures of my peonies if the rain hasn't beat them all down like it did the Rhododendron.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, best to be silly about Debra, weeds. As long as the silly doesn't turn into hysteria. LOL

Gypsi, way up there you were asking about s plant, woody, could it be a Forsythia? Love them. Has it bloomed?

All the pictures are just beautiful you guys. Ddon't know how you do it with all this rain.

Got a call from Bob in the hospital a bit ago. Don't know if they will let him out tomorrow or not. That "flu" we thought it was, might be a virus, they can't figure out what it is. There fore, just pouring the antibiotics to him. Hope they realize he doesn't have any insurance other than Medicare. His insurance company quit all the people in the county they had coverered. A lot of angry folks down there. All the other companies were real high with their premiums so he said to hell with it he would pay the 20%e that Medicare doesn't cover. Could be a lot. Anyway, it is after 11 o'clock, guess I had better head for bed. ttyl, Have a good weekend you all. jen

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Those flowers are a (1) Peony , and the yellow an iris

That sounds like a war where everybody's a winner. Nicely said!
We've been missed by all the rain, we haven't had any before or after we planted the corn.

Jen prayers are going out for Bob and yourself. I hope he recovers real soon. We couldn't keep our Doctor or our Health Insurance. I'm still miffed about that.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I planted a Peony bulb for the very first time, it was a long time coming but finally got a couple of stalks (scapes?) poking through the ground. I was so relieved/excited I ran to get my camera. Lol, I don't know why...I'm easily amused.

Hey, speaking of photo's, those are some beautiful ones up there...Peony, Iris and my favorite...sprouted seeds!

Fort Worth, TX

That shrub wasn't Forsythia, I love them, bought 4 starts from Burgess a couple of years ago and hope to finally get a nice big bloom cycle next spring. Turned out to be privet. I watched it carefully for 2 years, not one flower, but it was up to 3 separate parts when I dug it out? Went in the trash. With all the bees around here, I need flowers. Wish I could plant my peonies but still waiting, this time for siding repairs. May have to put a few away from the house and just create a false shade for them.

and the injured old queen lived and recovered, she led the swarm today. Trying to give it away, I have enough bees, but put some lemongrass oil in a bait hive just in case.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well Robin , when plants grow it is great ,!!! and cheerful !!!
I have all my zinnia planted . now to watch the cats dig them all up , ?
A couple of wildflowers and few sunflowers are up . I planted the White catgrass seeds but not really expecting anything from them , all failed before ..
Spaced several seeds , more to try ,,

Hot outside , and nice , I keep hoping ,

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

If you remember the ghost in the front yard a couple weeks ago during frosty days this is what I was trying to protect. Golden Eclipse Lilac that was leafed out a little too early. Looks like my efforts of covering with a sheet were worthwhile. Looking pretty perky now.

Wow Ju, those little sprouts are awesome. Jen, I sure hope Bob gets well and you get home home soon. Gypsy, I guess those peonies will keep on growing as long as their feet are covered, right? I am still looking for forsythia..
a few bugs and such..

A few ladybugs here , not many , My Hollyhocks rarely look that good ,,
I really do not seem to have many older perennial plants , I will work on that .
Lot of annuals so far ,,

Something a little different. Took my 4.year old granddaughter with me into the bush on our property to put salt in the deer salt lick and ended up giving her a botanical tour. First is trillium which is Ontario's flower and second is a wild yellow violet. Don't recall ever seeing the violet before but the were a lot today
