Northern gardener stuck in the south

Sault Sainte Marie, MI(Zone 4b)

Hi all! I used to live in the UP of michigan and had some fantastic flower gardens. But now.. Here in the south ( south carolina ).. Im so lost, lol. It gets so hot here and everything just get baked IF i can even get it to grow. Now i've discovered canna lillies & love em but.. What to plant with them is the next question. Any suggestions ? So far im thinking of adding some Love-lies-bleeding in front of the canna bed. Any ideas ? Its in a corner by my front porch, house is kind of an L shape, the cannas are planted in an arch going from top of the L to the bottom right. The cannas will make that little corner shady so im going to put in some scotch n irish moss and make a litte secret fairy garden .. But the other side of the cannas needs SOMETHING. Thoughts, ideas, tips appreciated !! I'm stuck !

You are going to have to embrace that inner gardener and figure out how to deal with the heat. You have a whole new world of plants to explore. Find a locally owned nursery and see what they have. Take a walk in the park and around the neighborhood and see what the neighbors are growing.

Maybe you can start with a new tree. Crepe Myrtle trees bloom the entire summer and don't get terribly big. For big, try a Magnolia or an Orchid Tree.

What you need first is shade.

South Carolina! Take a drive! Plants are things we plant, and dont mess with for summer, chuckl. Daylillies, cannas, daffs, crepe myrtles, herbs love the heat- sedums, sweet williams, vinca, snapdragons...

O yeah! You will see tons of butterflies, so milkweeds and pollinators are grown there too
