Ask-a-Dave's-Gardener: Northern gardener stuck in the south, 1 by marip

Its in a corner by my front porch, house is kind of an L shape, the cannas are planted in an arch going from top of the L to the bottom right. The cannas will make that little corner shady so im going to put in some scotch n irish moss and make a litte secret fairy garden .. But the other side of the cannas needs SOMETHING. Thoughts, ideas, tips appreciated !! I\'m stuck !
