A TIME TO REMEMBER

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Many years ago I was managing a grocery store and to build business we were giving away $25 worth of groceries on Saturday night. Now we had been doing this for several months. About middle of the day one Saturday this couple with a baby came in to the store and asked me if they had to buy anything to register and I told them no and gave them a slip to fill out. They came back a couple of hours later and I let them fill out another slip and they asked what time the drawing would take place and I told them 7:00 and also told them that I couldn't let them fill out any more slips that it wouldn't be fair to the other customers. No one had ever come to the drawing before but when 7:00 rolled around here they were. I tool the box shook it real good and started to reach in and the man said, 'I sure hope we win we haven't eaten in days and the baby is hungry now.' I had already put my hand in the box and something told me to ask him his name. Don't ask how it happened but I knew before I took my hand out of the box that I had that slip with that name on it. I was feeling scared, proud, happy and many more feelings that came over me that I can't describe. I can't tell you how my hand felt, like it was an instrutment that some higher power than I was using. Well I pulled it out and it was his name. I went ahead and doubled the prize and they gathered up a lot of baby food. They thanked me and I never saw them again. If I didn't believe in God before then I surely did after that.

Wonderful! It does my heart good to hear these types of things at this time of the year. I find myself getting caught up in my own little problems at this time of the year with trying to find the money to buy presents etc., as well as living expenses and hearing these types of things makes me stop and realize that my problems aren't really problems at all. There's many people with much bigger problems than mine.

I'm thinking about suggesting to dh that instead of buying each other presents this year, we should pick some names off of the Christmas tree at the mall and spend one night together buying presents for those people instead. I think he will like the idea.

Have a Blessed holiday season.

Just call me an old crybaby, I just couldn't help it. I almost envy you the swelling I know you had in your chest when you were able to witness all that relief and gratitude. I've felt the same thing when I helped serve holiday dinners for the public at my church, and I probably got more from it than the recipients. They don't do that now, it just fell by the wayside, but there are other dinners for the less fortunate every year. I can't stand and dish out food, but I make it a point to drop something good into the barrels set out for the community pantry and I always feel like it might make a difference. I have numerous suits my son-in-law discarded, small sizes, that I will be taking to a local tv station to help keep someone warm. They actually call it "coats for kids", but these are expensive suits that might make a difference for some man or boy. I hope they will make the exception. If not, maybe I will stand after all, and distribute them myself.

Great story GC,thanks for sharing with us' Sis'

Jim I loved your story and we are ever reminded that there are so many who do without the basic needs and food. You only have to look a little harder and they can be seen everywhere. Since I started working at the church soup kitchen my eyes have been opened even wider!! I'm nowhere near being a saint and the soup kitchen job only comes around every 3rd week because we have teams that do it each week. But when I am in that church and see those faces, I just think how fortunate I am to be there!! I am humbled to have been chosen to do this small thing and I know who chose me!! There but for the Grace of God..........
