Plant Propagation: The Basics Spring 2016

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I heard cornmeal also works for ants, I wouldn't know how to apply it for cutworms. Kitt, I'm hoping you do.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Cornmeal is usually in a tray or jar and slugs come. Flour - think it may be the yeast- use as a dust. Cant imagine wet weather use on this stuff.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I use BT regularly, only because the worms are bad on my brugs. It works!

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks Kitt, my DH would rather I use cornmeal than his beer. ;)

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL Robin, I am sure he would. I have never heard of using cornmeal on them. Boy Debra, I know what you mean about the Brug leaves. They can go thru those leaves overnight. When I didn't catch them soon enough on the Brussels Sprouts that was all that was left of the leaves. Looked like bony fingers.

Fort Worth, TX

Just don't use by on milkweed, monarchs eat them

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I don't spray bug spray of any kind near my pollinator plants, I find those and have great pleasure in either squishing them or collecting them for my turtles. I spray the soil and the plants I take out, in the garage. The brugs are usually away from my blooming plants.
here are my some of experiments in propagation right now. I fell asleep as soon as I got home after work tonight and am wide awake now. Dang..

Going nicely ,,Debra ,, Love the plants ,,
I usually peck off the caterpillars and set this them on something other ,, Doesn't always work but I like my butterflies and bees ,
I can take losing a plant leaf or two sometimes

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi joeswife, you are a real recycling gardener. Love your wipes container you use for proporgating your plant .lol .My Garden club meeting is coming up next week and we are having plant sharing day, so I have propogated a few plants to share.

Lol about the wipes container too!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Looks good cytf!!! I garden in a woods on steroids. And zoo, just not the contained ones...

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, phoo, fat finger foul. It has been a long day, those goosefoot ivy I clipped in Fl early in Feb, transplanted in March, and I think they gonna make it! We had no winter tho

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I'm confused, I don't see any fat finger foul. I see what looks to be two different families of Lizards mating. Are they different or just look that much different with maturity (or lack thereof)?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Both chameleon types, they get 12" long here if they dont get too lazy to dodge the birds. The foul was sending before the pictures loaded. One is a frog on the Sago, anoles, thats what they are called! We have so many! They have been busy chasing flies and wasps we havent foamed to death. I think our wasp count was at 1000 by dark. Night guys, I gotta go

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, I did it again. Went up to look at something to ask one of you and lost my post. I do know better too. Oh well. I enjoyed the plants and would love to know what the experiments were like the red bubbles, or marbles, or whatever in your second one?

I know you were tired and really appreciate your taking the pictures and posting them.

One year I was visiting friends in the San Diego area and they had so many lizards, err chameleons, that were all over their walls etc. They let them go as they were after termites. They had had exterminators in several times but still had the bugs. Guess that seemed to be the best way they could get rid of them. Being from the north, I just wasn't used to them.

They had 2 young boys so would not let them use poisons. Sooooooooo?

Anyway, sure did enjoy your pictures. All of you. Thank you. jen

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Wow Kitt, love your critters! Any critter that east bad bugs is allowed here :D
You have a lovely garden.
Thanks cytf, those cuttings look real healthy.
Jen, those are water gems, they look look little bitty beads when not in water, you add them to water they soak up all the water and gain their newer bigger size, I am not SOLD on them, but thought it be worth an try. I Have to recycle.. Joe would have a heart attack if he saw everything in the recycle bag that was suppose to be there, I sneak everything from that bag when he is not looking..

the passionflower has hidden the texas sage, returning plants in the top toilet tank, false shade gives cover to a strawberry begonia, borage seedlings that made it, and returning plant that was thought to be feverfew but I am not sure that is what it is.

I love that passionflower! All of my plants are trying to climb over and smother each other. Such a wet Spring. Guys, cornmeal wont work on cutworms, its for slug n snail. Aphids and cutworms are not so simply killed. The self rising flour will kill ANY cats, and a few other bugs as well. It is simply candy to them. I wonder if molasses that is syrup will kill ants as well as the dried flakes.

Fort Worth, TX

molasses and either oak coarse saw shavings or eggshells, mix and apply around plants when cutworms are a problem. They are trapped on the surface, sunlight and birds do the rest. Ladybug larva or squishing for aphids here

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I agree with Kitt, beautiful blue Passionflower.
Drive safe Kitt!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

I wouldnt survive if I drove safe, this robot truck of the future is a piece of conflicting mechanics. Hate the hands free vehicles.

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

The automatic transmissions were greatly frowned upon when they came out too. By "drive safe", I really mean "watch out for the moron drivers" that don't yet know know how to share the road respectfully.

Fort Worth, TX

I will echo the watch out for morons. Take care Kitt.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Guys, these drivers every one climb behind the wheel and lose their mind. They aren't driving, they are thinking abt anything and everything but driving. All ya have to do is watch the vehicle, and you can be a mindreader on where they are thinking. Not gonna start on that one, not. Disgusting day, I could have been home watching my seeds grow. .

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Magnetic control road drive ,,, How to be magnetically drive control sealed into a wall another vehicle ,etc
Magnetically sealed to your favorite person or life long hate ,,

yep ,, control issue ,, lol

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Eeeeeek!

Fort Worth, TX

well on the propagation or plant survival front, I kept 2 hostas in the green house all winter, and they bloomed and died back; now they won't come up, do I need to refrigerate for a couple of weeks? Appear to be alive but dormant

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

ROTFL Kitt , Bi-Polar Vehicles ,,,Going North or South ???
More sticky than the old road map days with coffee or soda spilled n them ,,
unfortunately ... We might all be the Sticky , gooey , stuff ,,,,, oooooooh

Gypsi might only be taking them a while .. Sometimes they only show late spring here in colder area .. Depends on the Hosta ,, the Hardiness .. Another month before they start growing here ,

Fort Worth, TX

they are up around here except for these. Didn't know if they needed a winter. Kitt do yours go dormant and then come back up, you don't get much winter.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Hostas are slow, some var are worse. Too wet for me to have hostas. If you know where they are, scratch the dirt near them carefully, so sensitive to heat in Tx for hostas...

Oxdrift, Canada

Conversation above makes me feel real good about living in Zone 3 because Hostas are one of my favourites and they do wonderful here. The one pictured is Sagae. It has been in that garden for over 12 years. For the first few it barely made it from year to year so must be a little less hardy than most that I grow but it was spectacular in 2015.

Happy Birthday joeswife!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Ooho! Happy birthday Joeswife! Hope its special.

Fort Worth, TX

I may have gotten mine too wet in the greenhouse.. thinking about a refrigerator visit for a week or so and then pull them out and try again.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, the big black ants are starting to come into the house now. Or,maybe they are just waking up. Not sure. We do get bees that wake up from hybernating over the winter. Wonder why they do that when the house is warm all winter.

I finally saw a humming bird yesterday. I put the food out early this year so I had Bob bring the feeders in and I mixed them some fresh stuff. The first week or so I mix their food 3/l because I figure they are pretty tired from their long trip. Then after that I mix it 4/1. also better when the flowers start blooming.

Have any of you had any experience with Chia seeds? Besides putting on pets I mean. LOL, it is suppose to be fairly good and healthy food for cattle. I was thinking of puttingh some in for the deer in the winter. What do you think? I called the weed control board and asked. She said it could be invasive here. Well, I don't think she really knew, so might try it anyway.

Here is a link about growing Hostas in the South. http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/145/

I've grown them here, they need shade and a lot of water.

Fort Worth, TX

soak chia seeds in a little water and add to oatmeal for a nutritious treat. They add a nice fiber.

Oxdrift, Canada

Awesome, healthy breakfast:

Mix in evening and let stand in fridge overnight:
1 part oatmeal
1 part almond milk
Small amount sweetener ( I use maple syrup or agave syrup)
Dash of cinnamon
1 tsp chia seeds
In morning add nuts or bananas or blueberries and enjoy. We usually always have wild blueberries in the freezer. I just throw in about 1/4 cup frozen berries and give them a few minutes to thaw before eating.
Thanks for the reminder. Haven't had this for a while

Fort Worth, TX

yours sounds better! I lack imagination at times, although I am currently eating a soup with no recipe

Lisa the link is fabulous. I am not sure I water often enough for hostas but going to try them out, and I think I am going to bare root them. I put their damp pots in the refrigerator earlier, will pull out.
