2016 Year List

(Zone 5a)

Quote from irisMA :
20 red winged blackbird was tryi ng out the tube feeder. A friend on the other side of town had them Feb. 22. Evidently our area is not for 'early birds'. If it tried a feeder, it must be really hungry.

We usually have one or two Red-wingeds use a feeder. Either they are hungry, or they realized it's a quick easy meal.

(Zone 5a)

58. Eastern Bluebird
They are incredibly early for checking out the nesting boxes.

(Zone 5a)

59. Song Sparrow, 10 March

We also saw a gull, likely Ring-billed, but decided to just wait until Saturday when we know we'll see them for sure. The one we saw was flying overhead while we were a stop light.

South Hamilton, MA

If it stops raining & I can weed the garden, I usually see a couple migrants. I hope to do so soon.

(Zone 5a)

60. Rusty Blackbird
61. Brown-headed Cowbird.... bummer.

South Hamilton, MA

right I hate it when those turn up. Not here as yet.

(Zone 5a)

When I keep track of the family year list, I write down every bird the others tell me... but I won't do that for that cowbird. I know it's only a matter of time. I just could not deny that I saw two yesterday.

(Zone 5a)

A very good day of birding with 11 year birds. (Our day total, so far, is 52) Finally got a Scaup correctly identified and our biggest surprise of the day was a Common Redpoll next to the lake. I had never seen any away from bird feeders and with the weird weather, I thought they'd long be out of Iowa. And why is it the few moments I am using the necessary, that is when a great bird is seen by others?! I missed a Brewer's Blackbird this time.

62. Ruddy Duck, 12 March
63. Red-breasted Merganser
64.Ring-billed Gull
65. American White Pelican
66. Hooded Merganser
67. Northern Shoveler
68. Lesser Scaup
69. Herring Gull
70. Turkey Vulture
71. Common Redpoll
72. Pileated Woodpecker

South Hamilton, MA

21 house sparrow & I am glad to say in the little shopping center in our town, not at our house.

Lea Hill, WA

No.. The Heron was standing.. The silvery blue birds were swimming.. about the size of a mallard. Observed here between Black Diamond and Auburn.. Crows, eagles, Junco, robins, scrub jays, humming birds, sparrows, sap suckers, red tailed hawks, northern flicker, chickadees, Grosbeaks, Rufous-sided Towhee, Fox sparrow, House finch. In the ponds I see.. Bufflehead, mallards, Canada geese, wood duck, Red wing black bird, ring necked pigeons.( I think someone released them here) Regular pigeons, Barn owl (at night) I have a Book of North American Birds.. But I can't find the silvery bird/duck in it.

South Hamilton, MA

Which book? It is probably a western bird which we don't see. 22 American robin. A couple were flying together here this morning. Could your silver birds be Asian?

Lea Hill, WA

Might be.. We are on a migratory arc..I do love watching wild life. It surprises me at times.. a small voiced chickadee can come up with a LOUD tune!

South Hamilton, MA

Still the same ones already sighted around here.

That's all I am seeing here too, but I sure am enjoying the Rusty Blackbirds that have been hanging around since the 10th.

South Hamilton, MA

I like our also. Cardinals are back from earlier so their other food my be running out. I have not heard them calling as yet, but know that there are at least 2 pair in the area.

(Zone 5a)

73. Tree Swallow

Too early with snow still being predicted. It was looking into one of the boxes.

South Hamilton, MA

A scouting male?

(Zone 5a)

Could be... I did not see the bird today. Looking at previous lists this was ten days earlier than the previous record. I just hope the swallows find food if they are caught in a snow.

(Zone 5a)

74. Wood Duck, 22 March
75. Eastern Phoebe
76. Great Blue Heron, I finally saw one yesterday, the others saw it earlier.
77. Pied-billed Grebe
78. Barred Owl, First time hearing the "Who cooks for you" call. We were in a nature area where the habitat is right for this owl. At home we only hear the Great Horned.
79. American Woodcock

South Hamilton, MA

We have been hearing the barred owl call off & on. There should be the screech owls around but have not so far this year.

South Hamilton, MA

23 Turkey vulture. In flight, probably looking for road kill.

(Zone 5a)

80. Greater Prairie Chicken, 26 March
81. Fox Sparrow
82. Northern Mockingbird
83. Purple Martin

It cannot count on the list since we already saw the species, but it was a highlight. For the first time, I saw a male Wild Turkey displaying.

We have the eastern phoebe.

(Zone 5a)

Quote from irisMA :

That's our usual Phoebe, too, but this western visitor has been seen at a state park for over a week now. We thought we'd give it a try, since it was not overly far for us.

South Hamilton, MA

Nothing like a visitor to up your bird count. Cheaper than traveling. ☺

91. Osprey, 18 April
92. Savannah Sparrow, 21 April
93. Grasshopper Sparrow, 21 April
