Hey all,
Two quick questions:
1) I have this little angel wing begonia that I stuck in water, and its roots have finally developed. Is now the time for potting, or should the roots get bigger?
2) I know they get pretty big, but should I start this one off in a small pot, then repot when it's bigger? It's about four inches tall right now.
Thank you!
Potting Rooted Angel Wing Begonia?
It needs more roots before you plant it. Start with a pot sized to the plant. You can replant it as it grows. Potting soil only lasts a couple years before it needs replacing anyway.
AW Begonia stems can also be rooted straight into a pottng MIX (not soil).
Water is OK--nut they will root just as well in a potting Mixn wgich is light and fluffy.
From your pictures--to me it seems to have enough roots to pot it up, since they root
without any previous roots (from water) straight into a MIX.
Do not over water. keep it just moist. Put it outside in the summer once the weather gets warm. No direct sun! Just a bright shade exposure will be fine.
I have been growing one for 25 years. Same plant. I just take cuttings in the spring
when i put it outside. Get rid of thee long "cane" stems (if any). They do not need to be there. Older plants develop these. new plants may not...yet....
First--take cuttings from the tops of the canes, and pot them up and wait...
Cut back the older plant to "nubs" and it will re-grow. And--so it goes--every year....
have been doing this for 20-25 years. Same plant.
This is in late July--August in 2008. This shows you how well they can come back from being cut back. Of course--this plant is quite old. But, still--it is the same pant
no matter what. Nurture it and let it grow and cut it back--and let it grow. etc...
Yours can look just like mine. Gita
Thanks for the advice! You have a beautiful begonia.
I potted my little rooted one a while ago, and it took off really fast. It will need a bigger pot soon. This plant is actually from my grandmother's plant, and it has been cut and regrown many times (and it is probably quite old at this point), but the one at my mom's house is very leggy. I will try to give this one regular grooming to keep it from having those "cane" stems, as you suggested.
Thanks!
