That looks like a fine old Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum).
Young twigs of Styrax obassia have bark that peels, yes.
My 6 Cornus mas 'Golden Glory' are about 25 years old.
Even if it's barking, it ain't always a dog...
OK, OK, no more flowers. I ventured out into the rain to try to find a peeling young twig on my Styrax obassia, but I couldn't see anything interesting. Maybe too early in the season. My Styrax japonica on the other hand has a string of these growths - are these burls? And is it normal behavior or does it indicate a disease? I've never noticed it before.
Many little aliens faces there, Wee. I'd be sleeping with one eye open...
There apparently is something causing initiation of adventitious buds at those points. There's evidence of weak stem growth from each of them. How have you been treating this plant? Lots of summer drought stress? Severe winter temps? Influences like that can sometimes cause this reaction.
Keep looking on your Styrax obassia. It is normal behavior for the species.
I bet that quick answer was a mind-easer Wee. I'm happy for you it was caused by climactic stress and not something that requires incision and extracting!
Interesting, as I had already speculated about the alien theory. Nice to have confirmation.
Did Sigourney Weaver used to own your house...
Now who's off topic?
That Golden Glory Cornus Mas is amazing!
And nice flowers, Wee.
