Tried this thread a long while back with a good response, thought with all new members since then it might be fun to see again. I am related to Sophie Rhys- Jones who married Prince Edward.
Famous relatives
Thomas Whiteley, Titanic survivor.
If I tell you about my relatives, you might not like me. I think maybe there were some pirates in there, since they seem to have come here from the Caymans. Claimed to be in the ship building business, but I notice they changed their names once they got here. The rest of them were Smiths, from three directions, but I make no claims to fame for them or me. Mr. Whitney sneaked in there along the way, if that was his name for real or not.
very cool john!!
My son, now 19 once scored a short handed goal (ice hockey) at the spectum when he was 10. They said his name and everthing! "SHOT SCORE BY MATT RUBERTON"!! He was famous that day!!!!!! (and boy was I proud)
sue
One of my GGGG.Grandfathers was married to the grandaughter of Pocahontas and another was among the 16 families that settled Louisville,KY. And somehow Charlemagne is an ancestor also.
We have Henry Clay as a direct decendant too.
Some lines we have traced back to the 800's
my husbands granfather is wilfred reid may the famous canadain aviator. He and roy brown were responsible for the bringing down of the red baron!
you can go to his web site.. and you will find me and my family there too on the website!
http://www.wopmay.com/
'Wop' may as he was known to his friends was in the great dog fight in the sky... and one of the red barons tactics was to go for the planes that had been damged and were flying hihg in theclouds away from the fight trying to get home. He would wait upthere for them and pick them off. Well. wop had something happen and couldnt fight so he was trying to get home.. the red baron saw him and chased him.... roy brown seeing this went after the baron and together he and wop got the baron in a position where he could be shot down. later wop landed his plane and took the tale section of the barons plane which is in the museum in edmonton I believe. Its great as we have all manner of books and cd's and video's about it all! Our kids are soo proud...
I'm not related to anyone famous. I once ran over Lou Rawls foot with my suitcase in the St. Louis International Airport. Does that count? (hee hee hee)
The only story I know of is my grandmother's grandmother came over here from Europe with her sister, but her sister died and her body had to be thrown overboard. Not anything exciting, exactly, but an interesting story.
Smilin', that's great! It's the kind of fame I can appreciate.
One of my ancesters from generations back was Sarah Boone, sister of Daniel.
smiln32 I think that makes you famous, good thing there was,nt a long drawn out legal battle. You may have had to hire ALI MCBEIL to represent you :}}}
Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island. My grandmother had a book that told who all the decendants were down into the 1950's. She showed me the book when I was a child and said my name would be in a future edition since I was a 14 th or 15th generation decendant. Grandma is long gone and I emagine so is the book.
Look For The Book MaryE, Those sort of things seem to some how survive. Neat to know your past I think, as it can sometimes show you your Future. I have heard the seafood Recipes in your area are supreme GOT ANY :}
ginlyn are we related. Rebecca Bryan married Daniel Boone. Rebecca was granddaughter of Sir Frances Bryan my ggggggrandfather. Rebecca's brothers and her dad Morgan along with Daniel founded Bryan Station Kentucky. Also the
founder of Dallas Texas, John Neely Bryan, is related. William Jennings Bryan that ran for President and was Secretary of Defense and was the lawyer in the Scopes Monkey Trial case in Tennessee is related.
ginlyn and Georgiaredclay, what an interesting 'serendipity'! Have seen such 'coincidences' more often than one would imagine while working on my family history. Hope you both compare notes and locate your ancestor in common. Genealogy is a great hobby. John
ginlyn you have mail.

Joan but not all of us believe that :) There are many people I do not want to be related to and some of them are in my family.
Intresting thread Prain.
Some great descendants we have here in the above posts. My first cousin played Cricket for India (B.S.Chandrasekhar). My GGfather was the Dy.Commissioner (a post of very high esteem in those days occupied by well-educated people). My Gfather was a renown lawyer. My father was a great sound engineer who had recorded many songs for the Hindi Films in the 1950s. My GGGGfather was working in Tipu Sultan's kingdom it appears (late 1700s). My Gmother's Gfather was a tutor to the then King of Mysore in the 19th century and a lake was named after him which is still in use (though the water has dried up some 90 years ago). His picture (a painting) with the King is in a museum.
Dinu, is Chandrasekhar a common name? I'm wondering if you are related to the famous astrophysicist by that name. I just looked him up to be sure of the spelling. He was born in Lahore.
As for me...hmmmm...my father in law once shared a taxi with Peggy Lee. And when I was really little (2 or 3), my Uncle Junior took me to the 500 Club in Atlantic City, where I met Joe DiMaggio. And my oldest daughter looks a lot like Drew Barrymore. How's that?
suky
Georgiaredclay, I'm checking with my brother who has all the info on this. I have it somewhere, but right now can't find it..(I'm always putting things away and not remembering where,LOL ).It would be neat if we found some relatives on here, wouldn't it? Gin
my boys are related to Stonewall Jackson of civil war fame.
Well, my maternal G-Grandfather was an inventor and was friends with Thomas Edison. Mom said he came over often when her dad was a boy. Wouldn't that have been interesting dinner conversation? G-Grandfather invented the lightswitch that does not click when you turn it off/on. That's my whopping claim to fame, LOL! :o)
Bitty1...Dan Blocker's mom was friends with my grandma. I saw his grave site when I went to my uncle's funeral recently. Dan B is buried in the same cemetery as my grandparents and uncle. This is located at, or in De Kalb, Tx. His stone just says BLOCKER on it. I cant remember if it even had the date or not. It was a large stone too.
I am related to the Ross family who are from Ireland. They had a castle Im told there....Ross Castle.
My roots are Scot-Irish, German, English, French, and Cherokee Indian. My family didn't keep up with family history well, so I don't know who all my kin were..especially on my father's side of the family. I believe I am kin to the Mebane, N.C. family. (from his side)
I have my picture made with Margaret Becker....christian singer...I just love her. She is so down to earth. What a great woman. I love her music, but she has a lot to say as well. She even wrote a book, very well done, I'd say. She is the one who raved about the poet Rilke. So now I have his book too. (Rainer Maria Rilke)
I love Margaret Becker! I don't own any of her CD's, but I have some of her cassettes from the 80's. I need to get them out! I like Rilke, too - First time I heard anything of his it was on the "Beauty and the Beast" (TV) soundtrack with the man who played Vincent reading poetry.
Kelly, I had a site at one time saved in my favorites of old castles. I think it might be stored on myfamily.com web site. I lost my harddrive and have been thinking I neded to find these castles. They were from Ireland. Ill holler if I turn it up. Jim
Ginlyn, heres a Boone family homepage link.

Gin, DH has sent Georgiaredclay what information he has on Daniel & Sarah Boone...
Well, I guess I made it in the news, so does that count? I'm also published in a poetry book that's sold in bookstores :o)
My favorite Uncle, Sonny (Raymond)Elm is the son of the Onondaga Indian Chief Ray Elm.We used to have some great parties. I can remember visiting them on the reservation.(I was told that they used his nose as a model on the Indian head nickel)I'm not sure if that is true.
Thinking back on this, it could not be true. I don't think he would have been old enough.

Here's a site that I found were my ancestors came to America. It has a lot of listting on ships and the passengers.http://istg.rootsweb.com/
I found the above that I had saved while loooking for the castle site.
I still haven't found the castle site yet but still looking.
My Father used to say that he was related to Louisa May Alcott of Little Women fame. Have not been able to prove that relationship yet but would like to someday.
Mom's family includes the Earl of Atholl in Scotland, her Grandfather or great Grandfather was the Van Houten who developed cocoa. (See, Chocolate is in my BLOOD). Her Grandfather was director of the Holland symphony.
I'm still looking for the castle site and I keep finding these little tidbits that I've tucked away and forgot about. A cousin send me a photo of the gravestone listed below. This is my ggggggrandmother and the mother of Rebecca that married Daniel Boone. Quite a story behind the headstone. It was found in a ditch when a new highway was being built. A man carried it home and kept it for years and then donated it to the historical society. The following was copied grom an article that I found on the internet.
A glass-encased gravestone has occupied a prominent place
in the Rowan
Museum in Salisbury, North Carolina since the late 1960's. One of the oldest artifacts on display, it is inscribed:
MARTHA BRYAN
DEPARTED THIS
LIFE THE 24 OF
AUGUST 1762
AGED 64 YEARS
Ginlyn are there in Moretz that you are related to?
I have a book left to me by my mother passed down from her mother that says her side of the family came from France. Nmae was Creason.....but when they reached America..Staten Island NY..they took out the a and made the e a long one. There is a castle in France called Castle Creason I would love to find out about. I have always dreamed of walking into a huge castle that had huge handpainted portraits on the walls of people who look just like me! Wouldn't that be something?
Now my Dad's side of the family lived just across the creek from Daniel Boone.....small world huh? The Buchanans was their name and from my understanding, when the South gave up to the North the apple orchard they spent the last night in belonged to my ggggggrandparents (maybe too many or not enough greats)somewhere around Lexington KY (yes I am originally a KY girl) and when the two generals conceeded Grant and what was that other fellers name...escapes me...anyway they all walked home down the same street together..all tired and plum give out....so does that qualify me? I have tons of stories don't get me started!
Donnajo
GRC, Not that I know of, but that doesn't mean I'm not. Are you? I went to school with a Moretz in Ashe Co. NC.
Well yes I am but have never met any of them. My 4th cousin was a Moretz and married a Mary Houck from Ashe Co. N.C. if we aren't related in some way it will surprise me. I don't think we are kin just related my marriage. Still checking.
Jim
For Kelly333
I still didn't find the site on the castle but found this while looking.

Ross Castle
There are few castles anywhere in Ireland that can boast such a dream-like enchanted setting as this ruined tower house on the shore of Killarney's Lower Lake. Built in the late fifteenth century, it is fairly typical of its type, with square bartizans on diagonally opposite corners and a thick end wall containing a tier of chambers and a winding mural stair.
The tower stands within a square bawn defended by round corner towers, two of which survive, the others having been removed in 1688 to make room for an extension, the ruins of which remain on the south side of the castle.
The castle was the chief seat of the O'Donaghue Mors, hereditary rulers of this district and descendants of the ancient kings of Munster. After the Desmond rebellion their fortified lands were acquired by the MacCarthy Mors from whom they were purchased by Sir Valentine Browne, ancestor of the Earls of Kenmare. In 1652 the castle was held by Lord Muskerry against a Cromwellian force of 1,500 foot and 700 horse soldiers, commanded by Edmond Ludlow. It fell after floating batteries were brought over land to bombard it from the lough as well as from the land. The Brownes, who retained the old faith, remained in the castle until they lost their estates in 1690 for supporting the Jacobite cause. Although their lands were recovered around 1720, they were unable to regain possession of the castle, which had been taken over as a military barracks. They subsequently built a grand new house a little further to the north, close to the town, and in time the old castle was incorporated as a picturesque feature of its landscape park.
Located 1.5 miles SW of Killarney on Ross Island within Kenmare Demesne, now incorporated within Killarney National Park.
NGR: V 949887. National Monument.
Open daily May - September. Admission fee charged.
Access by guided tour only. Tours limited to 15 people only.
Exhibitions and excellent collection of old furniture.
