I'm in western North Carolina, outside of Asheville & this thing appeared here late last night. Notice its back end isn't round like most bees or Carpenter bees.
It seemed both aggressive and intelligent. It was fighting another bug that looked just like it, it killed it, had it wrapped up in a ball & was trying to carry it off. It is pictured here with the bug it killed. Super interesting to watch!
I also have video of it that I could upload to YouTube if that'll help identify it.
