Indoor (possibly) flea; could be giving us bites! ID?

Lake Oswego, OR

Hi there,

My wife & I have been getting a few bites the past week. It's summer here in Oregon, and with the hot weather the fleas are definitely springing up.

Found this guy on my leg after coming home today. Is this is a flea? A little larger than ones I've found on my dog before... generally my dog is flea free the past year, with maybe one or two popping up every few months. She gets bathed every month with flea shampoo at a local BarkZone.

Noticed longer antennae than most fleas I've seen... but does share similar leg pattern.

Any help ID'ing this would be awesome! We're trying some home remedies to catch the fleas; setting up dishwashing soap + water in a bowl, with a lamp above... near carpet & bed. Hoping to catch a few!

Best,
DDCP

Definitely not a flea, but too damaged to for a positive i.d. - doesn't look like any biting pest...

Hey Flapdoodle!

Thanks so much for your reply... yeah, sorry about the damage -- little guy was on my leg so I reacted quick to catch him. Good to know it's not a flea... the bites we've been getting could be from spiders, mosquitos, etc., but I thought it good to ask here.

I'll see if anyone else can ID this in the next week or so, then close this case.

Thanks again!

Hi again,

Coming back to this thread with more pictures... got one of these in a pot of water in the sink... is this a flea perhaps?

Now, we have an average sized apartment, but my wife & I hardly get insect bites (an occasional flurry of spider bites every few months, etc.), so I'm still skeptical if our little dog brought in fleas. Still good to ask! This may be a one-off that I suppose just finds it's way in via walks with our dog.

Many thanks,
DDCP

This is a scuttle fly (family Phoridae) - very common (and annoying) nuisance pests; do not bite...
