PLANT ADDICTS CHAT #6

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I was SOOOO Happy to see the last two Dwarf white/lavender Phlox
clearanced for $6 today at work,
YEAH! happy dance!!! Reg. $14,98.
These phlox were, sort of, out of bloom. Just need trimming back--and they will
be good to go with some new blooms.....YES!!!

I have been looking at these ever since we got them in--but did not want to
pay $15 for them.
Now--I have to find an appropriate spot for them in my garden. HMMMMMMM....

NOT an easy thing....What will I sacrifice to plant these???? OH, my!!!

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Good find, Gita!

I'd be glad of an excuse to swing down toward Luckett's and pick up a plant from GT. LMK if I should PP you or ask David to pay and reimburse him. I can give you garlic $ while I"m at it.

And I know what I said above, but I'll take the $21 spicebush if Sequoia turns it down. I'm thinking Martina might want it, and if not I'll find a place for it in my treeline or see if I can get a butterfly area going at the elementary school (supposedly they have $ to put in a garden area, but I haven't seen any sign of it yet.. if they are looking for an organizer, I could do that!).

oops, just saw David's post that they won't be in on Saturday. I'm not going to be available that day either... GT, I'm not having a pre-swap that I know of LOL... I think Coleup might have meant "before the fall swap"

Coleup, maybe we just need to figure out a meetup time/place. Butterfly garden? (There must be a good one somewhere between you & me) Behnke's Nursery browse? Oh, and I think you might have a pink swamp azalea for me, although I don't remember what worked out with that.

Thanks Coleup but I think that Corylus will be too big for anyone to transport and I'm not sure I want to spend 40+ bucks on it.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Ha ha Jeff! Dare ye question the beaterliness of MAF vehicles? For shame!

And the Garden Center manager said he'd go 70% off on it since it's a 'tree' !!!
But, no pressure....don't want you or anyone else feeling stuck with a plant you wouldn't have scarfed up yourself if you were here.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Grr...oh alright, at 70% off I'll take it. You twisted my arm enough. Let me know what the logistics look like in picking it up from you.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

GT, Coleup, thank you both for being great enablers!

ooh, if you're making another stop by there, I'd take a Sunsparkler Firecracker sedum, pretty please. I haven't tried the Sunsparkler series before this year, but I like Sunsparkler Dazzleberry a lot. I'm also impressed with S. Jade Tuffet -- I ordered one from Santa Rosa that arrived with bloom stalks but *no* leaves; a week later, it's putting out vigorous growth from the base of the plant.

The Sunsparklers are bred by Chris Hansen, who I think is the son(?) of Daylily breeder Dan Hansen. See http://www.sunsparklersedums.com/

I was tempted by the sour gum, but I think I'd better save some of that space freed up by taking down those ailanthus for the toddler maples I brought back from my mom's yard (not to mention 1 or more of the baby J Maples from Muddy's yard!). I already have an elderberry and a vibernum to put back there, and I want to get some bush cherries as well.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Critter, your plants and garlic have been dropped off. Hope you like them when you get them! By the time I got back to Ace early Sat am after setting aside On Hold cart Fri am, the 'Feirecracked' sedum was all sold. In fact it was shocking to see how many plants and shrubs and trees had made it out their doors in less than 7 hours! Mountain Laurel gone, 10 trees left, 1/3 of hydrangeas and Crepes, both Hardy Bananas, all of the Butterfly Weed, and at least a third of other perennials and better looking shrubs! Guess word of their slale prices does get around.

SSG, I thought for sure you would chime in on this...are you on vacation?

And, Jeff, soryy 'Rosita' the darl leaved Filbert standard was just not up to snuff enough for me to get for you! Maybe the shrub form will still be there....I will let you know.

Aspen, as I loaded my van there one of the Garden Center people asked if the lady who got everything into her car, even that big tree, would be back. You are a Legend!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I had let my subscription lapse, so I could read the comments but couldn't post. I wanted to go check out the sale myself. Maybe later this year!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Coleup!

LOL, Terri and I know how to pack a car, when it comes to fitting in plants!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Coleup!

The Plant Bus slogan is

"If people can't come to the plants, the plants will come to the people"

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha, that's great! Would the plant bus look like this?

The Plant Bus as she looks today, 40 years since her heydey. She launched two successful and respected local nurseries, and sold many a plant before zoning laws changed and Venders licences became non existent. She was a natural food co op for a number of years and accomodated many an out of town visitor or friend temporarily in need of shelter.

A 1969 Ford 60 passenger school bus conversion that hasn't yet become a 'Rolling Home' or 'Tiny House'.
http://emersonmerrick.blogspot.com/2010/01/rolling-homes-sequel.html

All seats gone and replaced with never to rot redwood shelves and all along the ceiling, eye hooks for hanging baskets. Never made it to be my cabin while I build my homestead up in coastal Maine ala the Nearings or to Craig Alaska where I was offered a teaching job and planned to secure her to a big log raft and let my home rise and fall with the tides.

Usually of late she is covered in virginia creeper vine and less noticable, but I hope to paint her soon. She has sheltered many a critter beneathe her being a fox den for several years and now that space is claimed by the feral cats. If you stand on her roof you can see the State House in Annapolis! She is a very peaceful bus and has been grandfathered in as a 'greenhouse' so she is legal. Though I think the engine would turn over and purr alas, she is no longer road worthy. On one of her shelves are all of the issues of the first ten years of Mother Earth News

Judy--was this a story of your life? Your more "hippie" days?

So amazing! what a life you have lived, and how wonderful to
remember and share it all with us.

if I am off kilter....what else is new???? Gita

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha...I didn't realize it was a real thing! A true piece of Coleup memorabilia. I am disappointed there aren't any painted flowers on their, although the virginia creeper would be a nice touch.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Sitting here listening to the theme from the movie "Out of Africa", reading the story of the Plant Bus... wow I've got tears in my eyes!!! (sniff!!)
