Home projects in the mid atlantic forum- May 2015

Oh, and the bathroom that is on the list to be be remodeled was the avocado green.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Jan, we cross posted. I think ecnalg Pat and I have missed our calling as general contractors for house renovations. She has been in the middle of a total renovation project for her brother's new place in Texas for the last month or so. When Sally posted that link to the water damaged house for sale on the river in Charles County, I got a quick rush of "what if". Sounds like your neighbor's house is in the same condition. Would have loved to have made a career out of fixing up and flipping houses.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Same here. I am FULL of ideas. Hehehe.

My thought on the house Sally posted, was that half the work is done already. Just put it back together.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I think my kitchen paint might be avocado, technically, but the sample two years ago when I picked it called it 'baby sea turtle', so I'm safe.
Yeah that 'what if'' rush!! Dang. Go there in April and start camping out in the house. Work some days and goof off others. Just needs 'finishing'. ROFL! if only we knew how to to finish 100%!

Another opp'ty; well, several!

This 70's discussion was a hoot.
I did not have time, yesterday, to comment, but I jotted down some topics.

Sally---
My yellow sink (above) is not all that bright yellow--and the vanity top is
not yellow at all. It is white with a marbled look.
**I don't remember the blue and pink paisly look at all. Must have been "regional"...

My favorite color palette is of the earthy as well. pale sage green, taupes,
and natural wood look in accessories.

Jeff--
Most of my house is painted off white--because it is a "safe" color
to paint if you don't have any other ideas. I am sick of WHITE and crave
some colors in my house. WHITE all over the place makes me feel like
I am in a hospital....

Terri--
My house has no decor--but it is a comfortably homey and a bit old fashioned too
with a "lived in" look. And--a bit cluttered--as you all well know. Lots of plants!
Lace? I have lace valances on most of my windows. Don't know WHY I Like the lace lok--
I don't think of myself as a "lace" person. Must be psychological....
NO regular curtains--except in my kitchen--there are home-made cafe curtains.

CAM--I did and wore all the same things you mentioned above. Bell bottoms--
teased hair--etc. I made many of my own clothes back then and still hang on to
(not wear!) some classics that rival the best couturiers. Like--I have a beautiful, washable wool,
3-piece suit I made. Pants, vest and jacket. Lined yet! Man!! How I slaved over those..
Long, beautiful Pantaloon gowns....
This is a test question to those under 50.
What is a pantaloon gown? NO fair Googling!!!!

For you young'uns--I will go back another decade--the 50's!
Circle skirts, petticoats to wear under them--saddle shoes--bobby socks--
and the little white collars we wore around our necks--held together by a pretty pin.

Talking about pins--there were also the chains, with clips on each end, that held
the sweater over the shoulders, from falling off. See--we did not, actually,
wear those sweaters--they were just, fashionably, draped over the shoulders.

As for the colors discussions--YEP! I am sure I had them all at some point in my house.
Still do--as you can see above. My house was built in 1969.

Gita..........memories..............

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

On the practical side--here is how to keep your bath towels neat in your Linen Closet.

Roll them up.....so easy to pick the one you want without messing up the
whole pile, as always happens if they are just folded and stacked.

Oh yay, I can pass that quiz, I'm over 50!! .... hmmmm...hey, wait a minute...

As an adult, our houses have always been white (all 2 of 'em, including the one we live in now).. up until just a few years ago when we got that horrid old grey carpeting torn out and got lovely hardwood flooring. Now the walls are a creamy eggshell, just enough "off" from white to bring out the warmth from the floor, but not be too dark.
Forgive the messiness of the floor, it was still brand new and had yet to be cleaned up and ready for furniture. :) This pic shows the colour of the living room wall, the 'just-right' warmth of the creamy egg shell.

Beautiful, speedie!

I thought this was a nice comparison of pros/cons to carpet VS hardwood floor.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

It seems the carpet-industry expert is not telling the whole truth with this statement: "Carpet does not aggravate asthma and allergies. It traps airborne dust particles in the spaces between the tufts, where a good-quality vacuum can dispose of it."

However, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, "First you need to remove the source of as many allergens that you are sensitive to as possible. This includes pets, carpets, overstuffed furniture," etc.

Also, "Keep in mind, though, that vacuuming will not get to dust mites deep in carpets and mattresses. Vacuuming also puts dust in the air."

I absolutely cannot live in a house with carpeting. When my allergies became so severe that a combination of prescription meds stopped working, my doctor told me to get rid of all of the area rugs and even curtains.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh, thanks for the important correction, Terri. Sorry about your allergies!
Besides the $$, Mark is voting carpet because it's more comfy for Addy. I'll have to gird my psychological loins for yet more dumping of unused stuff if we have to move all the LR stuff.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Doesn't carpeting also 'outgas' lots of air pollutants?

"Car Talk" radio show this am discussed all the 'outgassing' in the interiors of our cars, especially when closed up in hot sun. Gasses deposit a thin film on interior windows that makes them hard to clean. Air out car when possible. Good grief! I've got all the newspaper plastic bags 'outgassing' in mine.

I vote wood floors and dog beds and throw rugs which can be washed, thrown outside or discarded over carpet. Also, with pets, it is far easier to control fleas on wood or hard sufaces than in carpet, IMHO. Having a 'no shoes in the house' policy keeps out lots of dirt.

Talk of the 50 s made me think of pony tails, poodle cuts and DA s and flat tops and

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

WOWSA!!! I read them all!!!

Then forwarded this to about 50 people. G.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

LOL, yes you did Gita, and I suuure did enjoy that reading this morning!! =) Those Burma Shave ads were priceless, I wish they still did those.. or something like it.

Ummm, I apologize for being a party pooper, but The Concrete Guy (whose name is Gerry, by the way) was back again yesterday to finish up prepping the forms for the concrete to be poured. That's all that's left for that - next Saturday he'll pour ALL the concrete in all the areas, then we'll be ready for the shed guys. Wheeee!!! =)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Did any of you have platform shoes with the fish in the platform?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

We probably had 'terrarium' shoes ROFL

Frederick, MD

Sure... but don't tell Elton John, he's still looking for the thief. Shhhhhhhhhhhh.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

You mean these?

That looks like a spider. Ummmm... I wouldn't get near anyone wearing that shoe. Not sure I would call it a fear of spiders but I have a serious dislike of them.

Speaking of the old days... I don't like spiders and snakes, and that ain't what it takes to love me, like I want to be loved by youuuuuu.

Okay... who remembers who sang that song, and no googling !

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe, Don't remember the singer, but remember the song.

Baseboards are going in the bedroom. Closet finished enough to hang up the clothes. Classes started yesterday, so his time will be split between schoolwork and projects.

I need to touch up paint on one wall that Jeff marred while putting in floor boards.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Jeff, I just caught up a little on this thread. Your downstairs looks great, and your attention to detail is off the chain.
I'm currently replacing the front door, replacing a 36x79.5 door with another, sounds simple right? Not so, it has turned into the door to hello. I have to cut out all the interior frame and start again. I haven't quite reached my frustration level, so it is progressing, abiet slowly.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

hello---- hahahaha. We hired out for exterior door replacement, knowing that IS beyond Mark's skill

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

If we bought a new door we might have done that just to save Ric from the frustration. But this was a very nice free door. So he is stuck with putting it in. The door that came out was put in by the contractor that did some of the work on the new addition way back and we have found many things we were not happy about this is just one of those things.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Holly, my whole house and the plumbing and electrical and heating must have been put in by your contractors brother! Nothing is straight forward or by the book or standard!

Successfully completed repair to main water line leak!, but then found a leaky toilet flapper. Repaired that but with the whole house off water is still moving through the water meter...
Which means there is another leak somewhere in the main line from meter to house
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

So, HELP somebody check my math:
Every 7 minutes 10 gal h2o goes thru meter How much is that per day?

Or, after toilet fixed
Every 20 min 10 gal of h2o goes thru meter How much is that per day?

Thanks...my brain is just too fried and stressed out...so numbers start to swim around on me. I'lll check back soon. J

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Good luck on the door install, Ric!

Coleup, I have been wondering about the water issue. I'm not even gonna try to figure that out. Sorry. Hehehehehe

Jeff has gotten the three picket doors installed and all the trim done. Now he is planning the construction of the shelves for the one closet.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK---look at it this way...............

Every 7 min 10 gal of water goes thru the meter.....

How many 7 min. intervals are in 60 min (1 hr.) ? There are 8.57 intervals of 7 in 1 hr.
If every 7 min. 10 gal of water leaks then multiply 8.57 X 10gal. = 85.7 gal. per hr.

There are 24 hours in a day, So--85.7 gallons per hour X 24hrs. (One day) ............

You lose 2105.68 gallons water in a 24 hrs.

720 gallons per day after fixing the toilet.

I hope the leakage is caused by something easier to fix than the water line!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

good job on the math gals!

hose bibs all ok?
tiny consolation- if you were on septic you would be in deep doo doo, literally, with that leak.....

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally, I am on septic! Yet with that amt of leakage we can find no 'wet spots' even though all those gallons leak out before the main gets to the house and then the septic. I'm glad I am not on sewer as sewer charges are double the cost of the water usage.!

Anyhow. I maybe off a decimal point on the # above, so currently (hahaha) leaking 72 gals per day...Working on getting a Water Dept guy out to splain the meter to me, hopefully at no charge as I am due for a quarterly reading next week anyway,

Today we will disassemble the repair we made and insert a shut off valve so we can determine which half of our water main is leaking: meter to repair or repair up to house (repair up to house runs under a 60 year old white oak that was only an acorn when house was built) Hoping for meter to repair for current (hahaha) leak location.

5 gal flush buckets filled and 2 litre drinking water at the ready...another DIY adventure awaits!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Will the Water Dept guy bring out a leak detector to help you find the source?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

oh, I didn't know you could be on public water and septic. And, it isn't getting to the house. You think you could see some sign of that water on the surface!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh. I'm afraid a lot of water could be sucked right up by a big tree.
:^(

Another friend of mine just finally located a pipe that has been leaking inside the foundation wall? for way too long. They knew the basement was much too damp. I sure hope your leak is still outside the house but.....

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Update
SSG just commented on another thread that she can't believe that my water line probs are not yet resolved. And, I replied

LoL SSG, if we had $4K to have a new line put in, it would be resolved. We have repaired two external to house leaks and one leaky toilet inside the house and dug two holes to find the remaining leak, which we now believe is under the large white oak where we gan't dig or repair to buy us time to replace the whole thing. Getting more estimates this week. It's a one day job when we can afford it. Current goal is to limit our water usage and bill by turning on and off the meter at the street . Glad most of my gardening water usage is over for the year. I'm going to c & p this over on our Home Projects thread as an update. Do you think there is a plumber out there who would trade for a butterfly garden and lots of native plants?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow, 4K! D:

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Maybe this is what you mean by putting in a new line, but....can you have someone install a new section of water line to replace just the part that runs under the tree, rather than the entire line? The new section could skirt around the tree rather than go under it, which might save $$. I don't know whether it's possible to patch together old and new water lines, though.

I don't suppose someone would sell you water line replacement insurance at this point ; - )

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

or maybe you can temporarily bypass the 'tree' area, and determine whether that's the bad spot?
WIsh we could be more help.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Glad it is a nice day today as we have both doors wide open today. Ric is replacing our old front door, has been working on it for several days. It was a real mess. We got the new door in (not entirely in) as I will be painting it so there are no door knobs and Ric will be painting the door jam and doing a few other minor adjustments. But it is good enough to send the old front door to Josh's house where he put in the new/better dog door. Now Josh is here replacing the old back door with the newer old front door. There was some kind of issue with the hinges so they are moving the hinges from the front door to the back door one at a time so they don't actually have to take both doors completely off. So the two of them are both working on the doors at the same time and I am listening to their bantering, which has a lot to do with the two entirely different personalities. Basically Ric wants Josh to just get it hung and he will fiddle with it at a later date. Josh a perfectionist and in no hurry to finish just keeps saying "No let's get it done right and then you won't have to play with it later. I think Ric would like him to finish up so he can go lay down for awhile but won't as long as Josh is here working.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Holly, I can see you in the middle with yelling from each side... and finally giving up to go outside and talk to the chickens.lol Say hi to my namesake Sally Chicken.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

No yelling, just difference of opinion. He started to hurt enough to leave, after doing a very nice job.
So he went and I got to finish MY way. LOL I have learned (somewhat) in many cases to wait until he has exhausted his resources, and then apply my own, together we end in a solution, not a conflict.
He's very very resourceful and skilled, I just don't feel he is as innovative as he could be. If I inflect my ideas with his, there is no harmony.

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

Henry David Thoreau
and such is one of my sons!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL Sally, Yes no yelling I was just listening to the two of them. They are both so different in their approaches to doing things and when they work together it is funny to listen to them. But I find that Josh with his perfection attitude quite often learns a lot from Ric's we can make this work attitude.
Sorry our"Sally" is gone. We lost her last year and after she was gone we sent the rest of the chickies to Jamie's house. She was a great gardening companion.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha, I meant yelling only in volume, not anger. It's supercool that you're reusing the door. So resourceful!
Oh no, no Sally! no chickens at all! Do you miss them?
