Gita, I think you have me down for four of the trays of that pretty bearded iris but now that Robin has interest in it too, I can split it with her - two is good for me and will free up two to spread that beauty to Robin's garden :-)
FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING 2015 'Mid Spring'
Well that is certainly nice of you Terri :)
Terri, thank you but I would rather you keep them all and grow a colony of them. Maybe a couple years down the road I'll get some from you.
Ok Robin, but you know my specialty seems to be acquiring plants and not so much success at growing them LOL.
Share them for sure... that way they'll take off in at least one of your gardens and be available at a swap in a couple of years!
Aspen--
All is well---You still get 4 of the Iris--Chantelle gets two and Robin gets one.
That equals seven. And--that is all I have.
Of course--each tray has at least 2 in-good-shape root clusters--
so you can double how many plants you will, actually, get.
Unless I have missed anyone else--(.Hope not!) all is well. ..
Did I already post the bloom fully open?
Just took this a couple day s ago. It IS beautiful! One other is about to bloom.
They are doing well--in less than 2" of soil. Outside--all winter burred under leaves...
and coming through with flying colors. :o)
Just FYI--this Iris came to me from someone in a trade--long time ago.
I want to say, from CA--but not sure. She had to talk me into having it.
I think she sent me just 2 root sections.
I keep pretty good records of whom I have sent something to--but NOT
what they sent me in return. Bummer....
Anyway--now you can propagate this pretty, little iris and share it later...
Pic #1 is from q day or so ago
Pic #2 is from 2011.

Unfortunately---what I planted in the area I dug all these iris out of--
has not yet shown any life at all.
The Iris were growing in front of my Climbing Rose--"Autumn Sunset".
I wanted something else there--so I planted the Verbena Canadensis
in this place imagining it growing a carpet of blue all around there....
I also planted one in my small front bed--imagining this plant spreading it's
carpet deeply into the bed of assorted plants. Nope! Nothing showing yet!
Is this normal?
This verbena was planted in early fall in these beds.
Do they sprout late?
Do they not survive our winters?
Should I just be patient?
Help! Gita
Bevan's Geranium just beginning to bloom. I say Bevan's but my hunch is that some Ingwersen Variety was mixed with my flat from NC last year. Some are light like this and others are darker.
NOID ajuga from Catmint
Phlox
Blue volunteer FMN
Gita's heirloom primrose from last spring swap - very nice G, I love it!
Jeff--Glad to see my Heirloom primrose doing so well!
I divided all the remaining, root-bound clups too--and planted them here and there.
They are all blooming...Tough Cookies!!!
Should get a picture! Gita
awesome, Jeff. Hey, I have Gavota too. It's on the third year of bloom, going strong.
Love that scene of Packera and lungwort around a tree.
Seq, is your Pulmonaria Sissy White? (Sissi...something, don't remember. Sissinger? Something like that.
I don't (yet) have any shots of my own babies, so here's a couple more from work.
A gorgeous dew-dipped non-stop begonia, in a combo patio pot.
This strawberry pot is just about ready to be picked.
Lots of petunias looking pretty.
speedie I'm sorry I haven't been back to visit your nursery. It is very nice! And it has one of the most Cheerful, Warm, and Knowledgeable nursery staff persons I've ever met...(( you know what I mean right?))
Thanks for the call out Speedie. I looked it up, it's pulmonaria sissinghurst white. I got it from the swap last fall I think. I also think it was from Catmint but I can't totally be sure.
Your flowers are awesome, Sequoia. Must be quite a sight in person with all those daffodils and other blooms. Hope Darcy was impressed with all your work and the beautiful results. Didn't take long to get your pulmonaria ID'd.
Such pretty tulips! My daffs have all faded, except for the miniature ones which have been in bloom for weeks.
Every year I say to myself "no more annuals," then get tempted with all of the petunias and million bells.
Espresso geranium that's planted way too close to a volunteer fennel.
Creeping phlox a little bit past peak.
Woodland phlox. DH wants to know why we can't have more of just this flower.
Noid daff I got from a neighbor. I've had it for three years and it's the first time it's bloomed
Native honeysuckle.
So many beautiful blooms--everyone!!!
SS--love that woodland Phlox!
Speedie--Love the beautiful, welcoming sight of your Nursery
Jeff---everything in your garden is gorgeous!
I have a couple "new" blooms to share.
1--In bud (a week ago) "Balls of Dire" Azalea (from paul)
2--The azalea now in full bloom. I think I missed the best show by a couple days.
3--Close-up of the blooms.
4--Guess what I found among my potted up Irises? An in-bloom Dwarf Iris.
I guess it was meant for me to keep one.....;o)
5--My poor Camellia! Not looking all that great...The blooms are small and so-so.
Another tough winter took its toll.
ssg- is that daff fragrant? I have one similar, also late blooming (my last one) and nice fragrance No id! often has two blooms per stem
Thank you all for the compliments. Darcy does indeed think things are beautiful.
SSG and Gita, your pics are wonderful as well! SSG; why wouldn't you want annuals?? I love getting them. More color, the better. Plus that gives me the chance to pretty up areas where I don't plan on growing perennials.
1--This is a far better shot of my Azalea--you get the whole picture.
The daff foliage is all from those Heirloom Daffs--the yellowish/greenish/doubles.
2--First Alliums to pop up--planted last year.
3--Where did this come from? A small, lonesome, all white Tulip by my AC.
4--Delaware valley Azalea starting to bloom.
5--FINALLY! getting some blooms on my French Lilac bush...ahhh, the fragrance!
Over the years--I have been pruning back the very old stems.
I guess the new shoots are starting to flower. Yes!
Seq, I'm trying to be economical by planting mostly perennials with just a few annuals for color. I love petunias and impatiens in particular and grew some petunias from seed last year, but that was a lot of effort! I loved your zinnias last year, so I'm on the lookout for dwarf varieties. The zinnias I grew from seed, while easy, were way too tall.
Gita, I remember your mandevilla from last year. I think it was late in the year when I saw it. So huge and gorgeous in bloom!
SSG, were my zinnias too tall for you? They were about 12" tall by the end of the summer.
Gita, I can't wait for my allium to pop open. I have one just starting to open up. It's too bad I only got 17 growing from the 25 I planted last year. I got them from ADR. Of the 40-50 blue ones I planted, I think there will be only half that, that bloom. We'll see.
Oh no, your zinnias looked great. I think a 12" mound is perfect. Mine got really tall and lanky and sort of fell over, even in full sun.
What do you think happened to the rest of the alliums?
I'll bring you a 4 pack of the zinnias to the swap for you. I bought 144 of them last Saturday and haven't installed them all yet.
Not sure about the allium. Maybe they rotted? Not sure because all the bulbs looked good. Maybe I planted them upside down by accident?
Thanks, Jeff! You got 144?! You're going to be busy this weekend. ;)
What variety are those zinnias again?
The numbers of plants you guys 'throw around" is mind boggling to me.
144 Zinnias????? When do you have time to plant all these things??
There is another Allium ready to bloom soon. I think I only planted 3 or 4.
Some of my Zinnias (from seed) are getting huge. I never seem to be able
to prioritize what should be done first. I have the flowers I bought--
and the ones from seed, but the beds are not yet planting ready. Bummer!
SS--
I seeded a couple pinches of seed from a deep blue Petunia I had last summer.
Wouldn't you know it--they ALL germinated! About 10 days ago--I picked all the
seedlings out and planted them in all kinds of little bowls and containers.
They did not even have true leaves yet--but I had to separate them.
I could offer you one of these containers--if you are willing to wait and wait until
they can be planted out. I don't know where--or when--I will be able to plant these out.
That is why I do not like growing too many things from seed. I'd rather spend $2 and get
them in a 4-pack at my local Nursery. They are always so spectacular...
Also--SS--I grow a mandevilla every year. My splurge of $20-something.
I LOVE--LOVE this vine! It climbs as high as I have a trellis (8') and then starts
to fall back down over itself--blooming away. I don't care for the red ones...I like
this variety--with the heavier, crinkled leaves and lg. pink blooms.
Top of my Mandevilla last October. G.
What a lot of gorgeous spring color!
Sequoia, all of your tulips and daffs are beautiful, but my favorite has to be Pittsburgh.
Gita, your 'Balls of Fire' Azalea looks wonderful; I love that orange color.
SSG, is your honeysuckle Lonicera sempervirens? I have one of those and it's about to bloom. Yours is beautiful; I can't wait to see the flowers on mine. It's new so I've never seen them.
- Chokeberry blossoms - either Aronia melanocarpa or arbutifolia
- Dodecatheon meadia (Shooting Star) with Viola striata (cream violet)
- Chrysogonum virginianum (Green and gold) with fading FMNs
- Viburnum plicatum tomentosum 'Shasta' flowers starting to open up.
I can see why you splurge on Mandevilla, Gita; it's lovely.
Aaaaw gee thanks Sally!
Lots of beautiful pics in this thread !
Muddy, after seeing yours, even more looking forward to Saturday to get a good look at your yard.
I've had a viburnum Shasta at every home I've lived at the last 12 years. Need to find a place for one at this house. One of my favorite shrubs. Gorgeous. And man, what a fast grower.
Muddy, yes, it's L. sempervirens. The hummers prefer monarda, but they also go for the honeysuckle.
It's gotten really big over the last two years so I really need to support the vines better. I made the mistake of buying a very pretty trellis for this honeysuckle -- you can't see the trellis, even in winter.
" Muddy, after seeing yours, even more looking forward to Saturday to get a good look at your yard.-"-Me too!
I guess you mean a blue-purple. That seems purple to me, for an Azalea.
Coleup, I got 3 different varieties but they are all pretty much the same height/spread. They are mixes and I'd have to look when I got home.
SSG: No problem, I put them in my swap pile this morning so I wouldn't forget.
Gita: 144 annuals really only takes about an hour and a half, two hours max to install. I have a 2" auger bit for my drill and it's nothing to plant that many. It sounds like more than it is. Heck, when it's $11 per 48 flat, why not get them? You've got to love the amish places.
The Pittsburgh tulip is high on my favorites list too Muddy. Gavota is up there too. Your Dodecatheon is very pretty. At first glance I thought it was a cyclamen. All my chokeberries are starting to open up too. Arbutifolia, aside from having red berries as opposed to black, is taller and thinner than melanocarpa.
