Crimson, I think an important point to remember is that for those who haven't subscribed, there are many who weren't frequent users of DG before the subscriptions went into effect. I know I've joined many websites over the years; and I'm probably still on record as a member, but that doesn't mean I visit very often - if at all.

And these folks are not left out of trading. They can still have a tradelist, personal home page, personal journal and use the trade tracker features here. All of those tools allow someone to be an active trader on many forums, including this one. These tools are a tremendous benefit to traders regardless of which forums they frequent - I don't think there's any other website that gives you that kind of flexibility and freedom to choose.

If you're wondering why Dave hasn't published a total number of subscribers, perhaps it's because he really didn't care to have his annual salary out there for all the world to see ;0) But now that it is, maybe this will help us all to see why it's important to recruit new subscribers and to lay rest to the suspicion that Dave and Trish are making a killing off Dave's Garden - it obviously remains a labor of love at this point.

and maybe this will encourage us to purchase our mugs and shirts for Christmas too, I know the money has been put out of their pockets already. The good thing is that I'd bet that almost everyone of those numbered above take part almost everyday, either reading or posting. I really think that's a very good number of regular contributors, I know around here, that number is a very large church. Glad to be in the 'congregation'.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm happy to be here. I wish I could give Dave and Trish a raise, though.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Well ya know I am right proud to be one of those that are subscribed. If you will just notice alot of those that didn't subscribe are coming back now it will take some time lots of reasons why people couldn't join right then but I think lots more will be coming back when things are right with them so they can.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I still don't understand willfully stepping on someone's toes though:(

Numbers? A number is just a number. Doesn't mean a thing to me. I feel we have the best Web Master and Mistress, along with the best garden site around. They both have put their heart and soul into this site and I feel very proud to be a part of this great family that we have here. I could really care less what someone's income is. I feel it is none of my business as I would not indulge what my income is to anyone. I feel if anyone really wants to help Dave and Trish, then be a 'Garden Angel' and pay for a non-subscribed person. If each paid subscriber would help pay for another persons subscription, think how many more members we would have. Yes, I have paid for others subscriptions and wish I was able to do more but right now I am unable to do so. I try to come up with other ideas to help out Dave and Trish to help keep this web site up and running. That is why I hope and pray that the sales of this cookbook will hlep out everyone. We will have some great recipes from all our gardening friends and sales to help Dave and Trish as well. Where else can a person buy a cookbook like this? This will be really one of a kind and will always be a very special book for me.
I just feel, instead of worring about numbers, think of ways that we can help out and to keep this gardening site up and running for many, many years to come. Dave and Trish could have closed down this site, but he didn't cause I truely believed that he had faith in all of us to stand my him when he had a very hard decision to make about having to set a fee. Myself I'm glad that he set the fee instead of closing down. Granted, someone had paid for my subscription, but I in turn helped someone else by paying their subscription. Isn't it what this is all about; one person helping out another? Let us keep the chain of love continue. Don't break the link.
Sorry that I have gone on more than I probably should have but I just feel if a person helps out another, this would be a whole lot better world to live in.

I too don't understand the need to know numbers. The people who do contribute make this a lively, fun site and most of the names you see on the forums are those who were among the main contributers pre-subscription. DG certainly hasn't died since the subscriptions were made, its moved on as all things must do. People dislike change on the whole but you cannot stand still in this world. I think we have moved on to be a better, more cohesive group.

I'm sure other people will come in time.

Ditto to the above. My income is very limited especially this time of the year with heating costs and Christmas coming but I will do all I can to help Dave and Trish.Just got a e-mail that my coffee mug is on it's way. Can't wait for it to arrive.I wish I could buy one for everyone in my family but unfortunately I can't.I think we have the best bunch of people in the world here on this site and I also concider myself a proud subscriber.

snowhermit; you are going to love your coffee mug. I sure do like mine. They are really great!

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

i thought it was interesting to know how many subscribers we had but that does not reflect daves salary. with costs and overhead. but i don't care what his salary is none of my beeswax lol. i just love this site and would love for it to have many many subscribers. i told my mother about the cookbook and she is excited and told me she wanted 2 so far, because our family recipe is going to be published for the 1st time. i want one for my self. i know this cookbook is going to be a big success. i can't wait for it to come out.

Crimson

What exactly are you trying to prove???

If we were intertested in numbers we could have looked it up ourselves.

I don't think you really know how the site works for the non-subscribers.

Paul

I like all of the products that Dave and Trish have offered and feel there prices are very reasonable' For me and others,we hesitate ordering the mug(dearly love it)as we have rhumatoid arthritis and CTS and know we couldn't manage only the one handle, darn it' I myself have always been a "big coffee drinker"and collect coffee mugs and cups but cannot use them anymore, fooey'

Oh,remember the "DEADLINE FOR YOUR RECIPE ENTRIES IS THE Nov.18th"

COCO and many have worked very hard on this and know it will be a "wonderful cookbook to own and share with others, gifts for any occasion" Have a great day' Sis'

Well-said responses folks! Another great coming-together,eh? Birds of a Feather flock at DG (isn't that how that old saying goes?). Go_Vols, glad you pointed out to Crimson that there are many benefits here for non-paying members (perhaps he/she just wasn't aware of it). The original post did tend to make me wonder what the purpose of it was (and thanks for saying it tiG, I too wondered about willfully stepping on toes, hopefully the post was just worded that way by accident) but now I see it brought about the afore-mentioned "coming together". Very cool, eh? As for the other topics...they just reminded me to see if there are any coffee cups left and if so I better get one b4 they're gone. Hmmm...and maybe I'll do some Christmas shopping at DG while I'm there! Yeh, that's it! T-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs! I gotta get there folks! See ya!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I did notice one thing when I came here in July. There were tons of people signed up as members, but it appeared many of them came one time, signed up and never came back, or in the least, didn't contribute/post very often. A lot of the people didn't have pages, or lists or journals or anything else. So, it seems like the amount of members that were originally listed, weren't really 'members' in the true sense. Does that make sense?

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

I am priviledged to be a member of daves as a result of a very special garden angel. I haven't contributed much so far but I have met some wonderful people here(and still doing so) I don't have a way I can dig plants ,nor do I have many seed of interest to anyone, but what I do have, I am willing to share with anyone who wants them.Since I don't have many I don't put them on the trade list. I will use the forum, seed trading for the trading.I am very satisfied with everything at dave's. My life has been enriched. It feels so good to be able to talk to people, give your opinion, and recieve well wishes from everyone.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Tink, check out my list and see if I have anything you can use. I haven't had the time for trades lately and have plenty of seeds.

I have to admit I got curious and had added up the members also BUT I was thrilled to see there were that many subscribers! So many don't post often and some post mainly in forums I don't visit so it suprised me there were that many of us! That is more than the population of the community I live in and everyone of them are people that share a common interest. As for the non subscribing members, I figure a lot of them arrive via search engines and get an answer to their query and leave. That means that we are posting useful information that is being utilized and that as Martha would say "Is a good thing" :)

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi! Michele, I just checked out your trade list. the only thing I saw that I would like to try and grow is the myrrhis oderata, It can wait until spring. Thank you for the offer. I didn't see your want list for trading.catch you later.

Hi, I am not really into computers but I am into Dave`s Garden. This is an extended family for me and I`m suprised that the number is still so low. The people here are a very happy group and I`m glad to be here.

Welcome, Busybee! I just realized, this is the one month mark for DG extra's being made subscription. Cool beans - this is a good number for an initial venture. Tell all your friends: DG is THE place to be!

Ive been here since the very start when things were just starting and members were signing on a few more each day. I could keep up then-look at everyones trade list and make new friends. When the members started growing in the thousands I couldnt keep up anymore-I guess Im selfish-I like our small garden family, but newbies are most welcome, even encouraged. Dave and Trish have only tried to keep us all together here-THANK YOU BOTH! This site has done so much for me and for many others. The friends Ive made are priceless. The trades Ive gotten wonderful. You've brought me to tears, sometimes for your stories and sometimes from sharing your pain. I thank everyone of the 323 others for staying here with me! =] THANK YOU=YA'LL!
I luv everyone of you 323! =]
