Yesterday, I went to NYC with two of my nieces. One went to school with a man who wrote a musical which is in production Off Broadway at the Westside Theater called DisEnchanted. He had been a teacher and was upset with how Disney portrayed Pocahontas and all the other princesses, so this is really like a vaudeville show with the princesses. It was very funny! A bit bawdy in places. Definitely not a kid show. We sat in the first row of this small theater.
We parked in the Port Authority lot and as we walked through the building we saw someone die. There was an EMT there and when we came out of the restroom there were more EMTs. They tried CPR, but weren't successful. It was very emotional! He appeared to be homeless. The whole experience was overwhelming.
I am sooooo NOT a city person. I need dirt.

Oh what a sad and upsetting thing to have happened. I am heading to NYC with Jen and the Grands to see a Judo match on Sat. Lily's role model Olympic Medalists Marti Malloy is to be there.
Cool!! Enjoy. Will Lily be able to meet Marti?
I don't know but she will be thrilled to get to see her compete. Jen just called and wanted to know if I could go on Sat and stay overnight. Jen has a few things going on in the morning so we won't leave till after noon and then the drive up so I don't know how much we would do on Sat but it should be a lot of fun.
Jan, so sorry to hear that!
I have a family friend who was vacationing in NYC during the massive region-wide blackout years ago. They couldn't get into their hotel room because all of the keys were electronic, and couldn't get to their car to go home because the parking lot used a car elevator to park the cars underground.
WE'VE GOT PEEPERS YAY!!!!
Oh my Jan, that's terrible!
SSG: I remember that blackout in NYC, I think it was summer of '03 or '04. We were in Ocean City NJ that week on vacation and we watched it on tv. Pretty crazy.
Sally, I heard peepers in the drainage ditch on the side of the road as I turned off Rt 15 on my way home a week or two ago. To me, that is always my real first sign of spring - BUT, then it snowed the next day! I haven't heard them since :-(
I Must listen carefully for the peepers. I am so ready for some warmth and green and pretties.
I'm still waiting for peepers, maybe after all the snow has melted? LOL
I've been working on a broadfork, which I just finished cutting out yesterday. I gave it to Jamie to take to work to weld for me. I hope to have it soon to turn the garden and compost. These tools are awesome work horses and easy to use. I'll have to bring it along to the swap and show it off.
Mine is basically like the one pictured in this article.

Looking forward to seeing your handiwork.
What's a 'peeper'? I only know that as some creepy person peeping in windows.
LOL, Seq!
I was wondering the same thing! I feel like we had this discussion last year...
I think they're... frogs??
Tree frogs http://soundbible.com/tags-tree-frog.html
click on Tree Frogs And Birds Sound
They can make quite a racket if there are a bunch of them. It's hard to watch TV with the windows open.

They are tiny but their sound is quite loud. When they are vocal, you are engulfed in the sound. At the last bend in our road, it also goes down a hill and by a stream, and all of a sudden the car will be filled with their noise, in a good way. Sort of takes one by surprise the first time each year as you drive through their hangout.
When it was warm a couple of days ago (remember warm?) we heard the regular frogs again. No peepers yet.
I worked in the county environmental office that (rarely) went out on noise complaints. We went down to South County (woods and wetlands near the river) for a complaint about the gravel operation running at night, But we couldn't do the test that night because the spring peepers 'violated' the regulated noise level
I went to the sound file link and was immediately drawn to the silly fart noises link...LOL I'm so mature ;-P
When I found that link I just knew you'd see that Jeff. LMAO
We are going to pick up the remainder of our plant order this AM, in the cold and snow. Can't we get a break here?
JR and Jamie started a weekend backpacking trip this AM also. They're down on the C&O canal with their finish point in Harper's Ferry. Jamie was so hoping that JR's first experience at backpacking would be enjoyable. JR's young and his perspective is much different than mine, so I hope he thinks it was fun. ????
Brr, Ric.
But I think JR will remember the fun parts lots longer than he remembers the cold parts!!
I am going to a walking tour of Fells Point today. Great weather--whoopie...
Paul Novacek (rememberPaul?) invited me to join him on this.
The tickets were bought long ago. This walk has something to do with the U of MD
club of some sort that Paul belongs to.
We will start with lunch at avery eclectic restaurant called "Ze Mean Bean"--which is packed into a small row house and serves Slavic cuisine, coffees and wines. Paul picked that one out...
He is also treating me to all this...he now has a great job and can afford to.
Then--it will be 1-1/2 hours of walking & sight-seeing all kinds of unique, eclectic.
antique row type of places, houses and businesses in this waterfront area.
"Fells Point" is THE place for young people and "hippies" to hang out.
Lots of bars and Restaurants....anything goes type of a pace.
My biggest concern it to find a parking place. it is going to be street parking.
I DO have my handicap hang tag--which does excuse me from feeding parking
meters--for up tp 4 hours.
loooking forward to it---the weather sucks! it could have been better....

Gita
bundle up and enjoy! Paul is a sweetie. Give him an extra hug and handshake from me and Mark.
Maybe it'll feel a degree or three warmer down in the city near the harbor.
Gita - say "Hi!" to Paul for Pat and me.
Ric - where are they starting their hike from? Hoped they dressed really warm.
Say hi to Paul for us! And ask him if he'll be joining us at the spring swap!
It's sooooo cold out today. I haven't had one day off that was both dry and warm. Sally, let's commiserate. :(
ssgardener- yes!
Hope you and Paul had a great tour.
Hope you and Paul have a good time Gita! I know you'll give him hugs from us all.
I got all the plants home and in the GH and garage. I only dropped one flat, but it should be okay.
I need to come up with some place to put all the transplants I need to do. I think I'll figure it out. I may have to move some of the well established annuals to the garage, but I have heat and lights there also, so they should be fine. Many of the plants get carried out to the flats bench in the driveway each day it's nice enough. There they get real sun and watering is easier. Gotta' go and shlep more flats around and water the GH.
What's the deal with the snow we had today? So lame.....
That's for sure! We didn't have snow, but it was freezing cold.
Besides all of us freezing to death--the walk was informative.
it was sooo cold!!! Everyone was freezing their buns off--while the
82 yr. old Baltimore historian, Zippy Larson, talked anout the
history of this old place, the buildings, etc...
Finished up at the Polish Club on Broadway, which kind of organized
this walk. Had some beers and some food they had prepared.
it was a nice finish to the day.
Paul is good! Looks good! I relayed all your greetings...no special hugs...just verbal.
He has moved into a condo with his GF....in Kensington.
Undoubtedly--there will be a wedding in the future...
yes--he said he would be coming to muddy's swap.
I am up this early to be at the HD by 6AM for a store meeting....AAAGGHHH....
G.
Glad you enjoyed the event, Gita, and that Paul (and GF) are happy.
Yes, good news. I can't believe no hugs were exchanged.
Great to hear that Paul is doing well.
Ric--
When he met me at the restaurant--of course we hugged.
He is pretty hard to hug though--as he is 6' 5.
Overall--I don't think he is not the casual hugging type.
So--I just passed on the greetings from you all we sat at the tiniest table ever,
He did call me, after we all left to drive home, to make sure I got home OK.
That was nice...
G.
Like all Mid Atlantic Guys, he has a heart o'gold
Yes, indeedy!!!
Totally! he is one of the "Gems"......G.
So nice to hear that Paul is doing well and will be at Muddy's Swap always so good to see him.
I am home from NYC, it was quite the trip, the kids were real troopers and we all had a good time. Lily got a pic with her role model and she talked to her, just a few words but she asked her name and as Lily was leaving she said "Nice to meet you Lily" that just made the 6hrs of sitting on folding chairs watching judo matches worth it all for Lily.
Good for her!!! Ugh on the folding chairs!!
Yes, and they didn't have any raises for the chairs so you couldn't see the floor without standing up. So as soon as the participants were down on the floor you couldn't see anything without standing up and then you were blocking the people sitting behind you. It was not a good set up, Lily and Lucas really held up though the "6" hours till the end. The women were the last and they sure were impressive. There was a group from Cuba, first time they have been in the USA and quite a few of them were Olympic Champions. By the time Women were on the Mat we had Lily and Lucas sitting on the back of their chairs with us standing behind them so they got a really good view. Everyone behind us was standing by that time so we weren't blocking anyones view.
