Well Loretta, you made me a believer and I bought a 'Diane' on the way home from work. I suspect the blooms are nearing their end of life though so hopefully this will be one of those moments where I can imagine what it could be. They had some 'Jelena' too but I currently only have room for one. I'm glad I got it too because I checked out the pine again when I got home and it does look pretty sad.
FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING 2015!!
Sally--I DID click your link--but had trouble finding the pronunciation.
Then I realized I had to type in the word--and then a deep man's voice pronounced it.
I think I could, probably, pronounce most words in German.
I lived there 7 years--as a child during our DP days.
Guten Nacht! Ich must scchlafen gehn! G.
Interesting pronunciation, not at all what I thought it'd be in my American mind. Sounds like 'foyer tsauber'.
oooh! purdy!
No new flower here today, but I did get some pruning done before the rain shower.
Yay Jan!!! Very nice :) I'm still waiting for mine to come up. Hopefully the warmth today will help them out. I can't remember where I planted mine last fall but stuff is coming up in the area I think they are.
Jan, Iris reticulata "Harmony"?
These are/were my Mini-Iris. Are these :Retuculata'--or something else?
I dug all of them up last fall and put them in a big tray in soil.
Hence--there will be a some of these tiny divisions available at the Swap.
They were growing right in front of my CLIMBING Rose, and as always--
I needed that spot for something newer and more interesting.
This pic. is from April, 2011
Yes, I believe so, greenthumb. So very vibrant. I saw a J S Dyk also.
Gita, we cross-posted. I don't know, Gita, but mine are only about 2 or 3" tall.
Gita, that looks like a dwarf bearded iris. I think I see beards, the foliage isn't thin like I. reticulata and the petals are too full.
Congratualtions Sequoiadendron! I hope it does well for you!
I was doing Furzaber. Better stick with Fire Charm!
Beautiful Jan! I. reticulata are probably my favorite spring bulb!
Gita, I think you gave me some of that iris last fall. From the looks of things, I think it made it through the winter.
Gita, those Iris look too tall for I. reticulata, which only grow about 4 inches tall and look almost like they are blooming on top of the ground. Agree that they are likely some "extra early" blooming cultivar of Dwarf Bearded Iris, of which there are many.
Jeff--
Maybe I gave you some of the tall, bearded Iris in a pot to you?
It is a deep purple--and it is the one I dug out of my Uncle's yard
after he died. It is very pretty! Will dig up a picture for you.
I did not dig up these Dwarf bearded iris until fall--so I could not
have given these to you. I got these years and years ago from some DG'er.
I had/have some of these still potted up from the "Big Iris Dig" we did here.
Some of the smaller divisions I potted up and some of the pots have been
languishing here and there in my long side bed.
G.
I cleaned the old yukky leaves off of my Hellebores today,
Most of them had a couple bloom buds--none open yet.
Most of my tight clumps of Daffs have buds so ready to pop
you can almost see yellow through them.
Today sure will hasten this a bit....it was glorious!
G.
Beautiful hellebores! Mine are soooo late this year. The buds haven't fully opened yet.
Is anyone seeing forsythia anywhere? Doesn't it seem really late for forsythias to be blooming?
I just love ret. irises. I'd love to plant them on the lawn but I should probably get more crocus instead. :)
The house across the street from me has forsythia bush--
I gave it to them eons ago.
I can keep an eye on it for bloom--but it does not matter,
I have already pruned my Roses ans fertilized them.
The time just seemed right. Gita
No Forsythias here SSG. It might be a week late or so for them. They usually start blooming several weeks after my AP Witchazel..
G: you mailed me those irises in the fall last year. It was late fall, perhaps November. They were small tubers; I'm pretty sure they are the smaller ones. Anyway, they're coming up so we won't have to wonder for more than a couple months.
I'm jealous of your hellebores GT! Mine are still burnt out from the winter.
There is a bunch of stuff starting to poke it's head out of the earth though. I'm actually surprised how much has started to come up, perennial-wise that is. My spring bulbs are still slacking though. I have buds on one of my pulmonaria that I got from Catmint last year.
Wow GT, that's crazy! This past February was terrible for sure. I had checked the almanac for last month and we had 14 days with a low 10 degrees or below. Half the month!
Here's hoping the cold reduces the number of bad bugs, while, of course, leaving every good bug unaffected.
No forsythia here yet.
That Clivia is quite striking G, very nice!
That is a better form than the other one, that you gave me. Bloom cluster is tighter.
Those black pussy willows are so striking. I wish I had a place to add one, but... and the winter blooming jasmine, I gave away all I had becaaue, again, didn't think I had anywhere to really use it. There's a large one in our community rec area, I should check it out. I can always get some of that if I decide I need it.
My Jasmine came from you Sally, if you want any just let me know.
Sally--
The Clivia above is a different variety--the leaves are broader and rounded
on the ends. This is the one a customer at HD gave me some years ago.
I call him--"Clivia man"---if I ever see him. I will not divide it...yet....
The one I had first--and divided and gave to you et al--has narrower leaves
with pointy ends. The bloom cluster on it does not compare to the above one.
1--Here is mine, the same as yours. This is the only bloom it has this year.
2--look close to see the difference in leaves. Darker--wider--rounded tips.
Looking good Holly. Black pussy willows are indeed very interesting.
Clivia counts! So pretty!
I also wish I had room for the black pussywillows! They are classy!
I think the jasmine is late this year. Mine are barely blooming. Sally, if you can enjoy them somewhere else, I would. I have my issues with this plant even though I love it.
Nice flowers everyone! My yard is so dreary, even with the Crocuses and the Primroses that are just starting to bloom.
My Forsythia's blooming though ; - ) This is the top part of an entire shrub.
Edited to clarify that the Forsythia outside are not blooming yet.

Is that a fake forsythia or a real shrub, just inside?
I believe Muddy pruned back a Forsythia, brought the cuttings inside, and placed them in a vase with water where they proceeded to bloom.
Wow, that forsythia is gorgeous!
That's what I thought GT but she mentioned that no forsythia is blooming outside yet so it confused me.
That sure is a bright spot for these cold wintery day. Just beautiful.
That looks beautiful!
The rabbits ate one of my forsythia back to the main stick. It was a small one. The got some of the taller one too. Wonder if I'll get any flowers this year.
