"THINK SPRING!" seed swap DISCUSSION

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, I'd love to try a miniature amaryllis!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Great I will collect some of the tiny bulblets. That was all I had when I started this lovely. The nice thing with the Mini Am is that it makes a nice house plant, with the shorter smaller leaves. I will post a pic of it as soon as it blooms.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, thanks for the sunflower project link! They have some great new ID/info cards that I'll be printing out. Will have to check my seedbox for Lemon Queen... I think I have a few, but they might be elderly (even by my standards). I'll try to sprout them, and if they don't "do" I know that's an easily-found variety. But if you have 3 seeds to spare... :-)

Holly, the baby mini amaryllis bulbs you gave me are on the back of my kitchen sink... not sure they're getting bigger very quickly, but they're still green!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have 3 seeds from a "Gas Plant". Dicomus Albus or Putpurea. Don't know which.
These seeds were sent to me by someone I traded with as a "bonus".
They are from 2013.

After reading the member's comments, I decided not to plant it.
Seems this plant exudes some kind of gas up and down it's stem
that will flame up, temporarily, if a match is held near it.
It is a momentary flash and does not harm the plant.

Anyone want to grow these out as a novelty?

Here is the link to DG PF.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/17/

I will throw these into the Hodge Podge baggie.

If anyone wants these--LMK now. Gita

I have to say--it is very pretty. G.

Gita, I have toyed with the idea for years of growing this plant, so I will gladly take the seeds if you have not had any requests yet. I like the fact that you only have 3 seeds as this preempts my excessiveness. Thanks

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I rooted some lipstick plant cuttings last fall. The cuttings are well established in an 8" hanging pot. There are even a couple of flower buds on them. If anybody is interested in giving them a good spot in the house, please Dmail me. This Saturday will be a warm (ish) day. They should survive the trip well.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

David---You got it-as you are the first to ask. I hope they germinate...
The seeds are pretty large--like an apple seed.

Did you read all the many member comments re this plant in the PF? DO!
I always learn more from these comments that from all the other dry facts
that are presented on PF. Other than the full name of the plant--all the
other info. is quite vague.

That is curious--that you have wanted to grow this flower for a long time!
And there is--little old me--sitting here having had these 3 seeds for 2 years.
sitting right by my computer....ticked in a corner....
I hope they grow well for you so you can collect more seeds....

I am just sorry that I have NO idea who it was that sent them to me.
I have to look in my book--where I keep everyone's names that I have
given or traded something with. AND--their addresses....

See you both on Saturday. Gita

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Just looked again----another name for this plant is "Burning Bush".

Wonder if it has a Biblical connection???? You know--Moses and all that....

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Jill gotcha on the Lemon Queen Sunflower seeds. Anyone else?

Last minute seed requests if it isn't any trouble:

Greenthumb:
Aster laevis (Smooth Blue Aster)
Solidago gigantea (Late Goldenrod)
Solidago ulmifolia (Elm-leaved Goldenrod)

Gita:
Small pink canna root
Dark leaved canna root

SSG:
I'd be interested in buying a few of either of your Bush Cucumber seeds and some Sugar
Gold Tomato if you've gotten them already.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Critterologist, I'd really like a set of those Bee ID cards from the Great Sunflower site. Can you print more than one? Or, can you bring yours to Seed Swap so I can see them?

Anyone interested in some weathered cedar fencing boards 4' x 6" for making rustic whatevers?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

cedar boards sound interesting. although I'm pretty sure they would be rolling around my shed for years along with many other current interesting items, before I'd commit to or be inspired by a craft..my bad.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Our first order from Swallowtail Seeds arrived Monday, so I'm expecting part 2 today. Hoping Burpee (Spacemaster cukes) will be here by the tomorrow also. If not, I'll put SSG's seeds in the mail or get them to her another time...

Gita or anybody else wanting to try a couple seeds from the hybrid cukes we're getting, I put a pricing post for splits here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=10017172

Yes, hybrid seeds are expensive. They're also productive & disease-resistant. The ones we ordered are either compact/bush or parthenocarpic (can be grown under row cover).

Getting close! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

weathered cedar! yes, please.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Holly, if you just edited out a request for weathered cedar... I would be happy with a couple of boards to play with... I'll share whatever bounty Coleup has found!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Judy, gotcha covered.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

lol, I salvaged quit a bit of fence sections being dismanteled by one of my customers when he showed me it was cedar and not pressure treated and was headed for the landfull! Now to see if Sallyg will transport or can bring to Spring Swap if we have one.

Holly is cedar ok for mounting orchids?

Don't know if weathered both sides cedar is good for bird houses but several of Muddy's peanut feeders would be cute.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I'll take 2 cedar boards if Sally has room. I just thought of something I could make with it....a mason bee house using the bamboo that someone's yard guys dragged down to the creek rather than haul away.

Does anyone else want bamboo?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks Greenthumb, and if there are any of the seeds you are offering that you feel that the Monarch Butterfly habitats installed last summer could include for early and mid season or all season bloomers attracters, (several people out on my route are seed starters/native plant planters) I'd be happy with some of those, too! Thanks

Are your milkweed seeds cold/moist stratified already? Are all of the other seeds you offer suitable for winter sowing?

JUdy--

I can only give you one small piece of the dark canna. That is all.
Please ask donner for some roots of this. She said her dark canna grew well
last summer and she has some rots available. OK?

I have bee trying to resurrect this canna for 2 years now. It almost died out.
HD had a zillion pots of it last year that went unsold--and they got tossed...OUCH!

I can give you one small piece of the pink canna (Tropical Rose)--it has 3 eyes on it.
IF the big pot of these survived the winter in my shed--I will have more. But--too late now.
Literally--these are extremely hard to dig up and separate. They grow in a
matted mass of hair-roots and small bulbs

This is IT! No more of these two cannas available, Folks.

Anyone want any roots of the red one from wind? The monster toots maker...
All you would have to do is plant ONE--and you will have a bucket-full of roots.
Donner--did you ask me for the red one's roots??? Got you down for a couple
pieces of the pink one. Don't have much of it left...

Gita

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--

Is the "Spacemaker Cuke" a pickling size cuke?
What else can you tell me about it?

If yes--I will take 8 seeds/$1.

I am suree the "sun Sugar" cherry tomato is one that Bonnies" carries.
I remember the name....

Gita

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

HaHa Muddy, great minds think alike on the Mason Bee homes! I have a source of bamboo. What length are you cutting yours?

Gita, that's fine on the cannas...I only want them for containers this year, so small is OK. I figure we could leave them at Sallys when we meet for the drive up.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

What time are we meeting up at your house?? 10-ish?
LMK. Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

That's OK, Depending on length and amount I was thinking about picture frames. Weathered wood can be truly beautifull with a bit of sanding.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, and Coleup, I'll try to get the bee ID cards printed out. I wish they were set up so I could print them front & back on a piece of card stock, but they're set up more for printing and then folding so you have a front and back side. I'm sure you could laminate them if you're inclined. I'll do them on the laser printer, and that should be pretty good in terms of ink not running.

Bamboo of any length & diameter is welcome here. I should try to stake more of my flowers, the ones I know will flop in the first storm!

I was definitely thinking bird houses with the cedar. You don't want paint on the inside of a birdhouse, but cedar is just fine, might even help keep down any mites or other nest-pests.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--

I still have a lot of the stakes packages left. You want a couple? $2. 65 ea.

G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sure, I'll take a couple more packs of those stakes, Gita -- thanks!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Yes we can bring cedar boards. I think they would make super bird houses or feeders.

Gita, Robin, coleup and any other interested in ride from millersville- - we can leave here at 10:45 and arrive just before noon out there. I might be meeting or hosting my brother and SIL for breakfast so don't come super early, and I should have phone on me for updates.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I'd like to try a small amount of Swamp Hibiscus.

I actually only need 1 cedar board, Coleup. 8" seems to be the recommended length for bamboo bee hotels, so I'll cut the bamboo I use for it about that long. http://foxleas.com

I'll only cut the bamboo I drag out of the woods if it doesn't fit in my car; otherwise the ones I bring will be full length.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, 'Spacemaster' is a Burpee's variety, looks like a slicing variety on a bush/compact plant, resistant to CMV & scab. If you want a compact pickling variety, try either 'Supremo' or 'Sweet Success' -- both are "restricted" 3 foot vines, and I can vouch for 'Sweet Success' having that great flavor and crunch we associate with pickling varieties... I haven't tried 'Supremo' before but am looking forward to it. There are 3 seeds of 'Sweet Success' and 2 seeds of 'Supremo' remaining, 50 cents for either variety or $1 for all 5 seeds.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Jill---I will pass on any cuke seeds.
I have plenty of the regular pickling cuke seeds.
Like always--I grow them--but seldom eat them. So--why buy more???

Same for tomatoes. I grow them,,pick them,,and them give them away.

Thanks anyway. Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm not trying to make you buy anything, Gita, just giving you the info I thought you were asking for.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

FYI----

Anyone that has asked me for any seeds--those seeds will be dropped
into your Goody bags. You do not have to get them from my "BOX".

You are welcome to dig through my box if you want. Take more if you want.
Just wanted to tell you that what you asked for will be in the goody bags.

My NEW seeds (2014) will be in a separate plastic box. DO look at those....

Gita

I am looking forward to my first DG seed swap! I am mostly excited to glean from everyone's knowledge on propagation and favorite plants. I am always on the look out for native seeds. I recently opened a native plant nursery, but an truly a plant collector of anything unique. I hope to bring some wing stem, castor bean, False Indigo, Carolina all Spice, and a seed mix for 'sprinkling'.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

"sprinkling" mix -- what a great idea! Could I have some, please? I always get so behind with planting out... I'm going to try more direct sowing this year. I need to go with small designated patches and/or use markers so I know if new sprouts are weeds or something I want, LOL.

I have small amounts of Stiff Goldenrod and Riddell's Goldenrod to share from packets I got in a recent swap -- Watermark? Greenthumb?

REMINDER to everybody to please put wish lists on their haves/wants thread post. General descriptions of your gardens or your seed starting habits are also fine. Do you like tropicals? Winter sow? Start seeds inside? Grow veggies?

I'm planning to go through my stash to find packets I can share, but I've got small amounts of a lot of things, so I can't just split every packet... if there's something you're looking for, please mention it on your wish list! Odds are good that I or somebody else will have a few extra seeds... but if you don't ask, those seeds won't find their way to you!

Hamilton, VA

Critter, I will certainly put your name on some sprinkles!

I am looking for Pipe vine

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll check my stash... any species? I think some are tropical? Looked it up, and I think our local native is Aristolochia tomentosa. Pipevine swallowtails also use VA Snakeroot as a host -- are you looking for that too?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

WatermarkWoods, I haven' seen you post before, I don't follow all the threads though. So welcome to the MAF. We look forward to meeting new enthusiast.
