"THINK SPRING!" seed swap DISCUSSION
Sally, have the Corydalis sempervirens (Pale Corydalis) for you. Can I get some Moonflower seeds from you?
Sure Greenthumb, and thanks. The moonflower vines grew awesomely for me in 2014, maybe all that rain.
Sally-
Do you have a lot of Moonflower seeds?
Aina would love some--she has tried to grow them before--with NO success.
I have never had much luck either. Same for Hyacinth beans. What's the secret???
Starting them wayyy early? Do they need full sun? part sun?
That free shipping offer is still active. Hooray! I'm very tempted by the Kabloom hybrid callibrachoas, but since I already shelled out for petunias this year, I might skip them. I do like the idea planting short vined cucumbers, as well as a short carrot variety that should do ok in our clay soil or in a planter box.
Holly--
Do you have a name for the white marigolds you always share ?
Got a good picture?
I took a bunch of seeds from them and would like to have the
correct name for the Seed swap.
Thanks, Gita
Gita, They are called sweet cream marigolds. I am so glad that you saved some seeds from them it will be interesting to see how they do. This year we will not have as many to give away. The cost of the open seeded flat 600-800 plants has gone up to $60 and no one wants to split a flat. It's just too many plants for us to work with so we are going to just get them in 6 pkgs this year. We will have some to share but not like we have in years past. If you have a lot of them I would like a few to see how they grow.
http://www.naturehills.com/marigold-sweet-cream
Holly, I sure appreciate you sharing those, please don't feel guilty over not continuing. Oh Holly I have those couple gloriosa tubers for you, too.
Holly---
I can mail you a couple packets NOW. Then you can start earlier.
I just hope they are viable. Marigold seeds don't look a lot like seeds..
No biggie! This kind of stuff goes in a small envelope for one stamp.
Yes??? No??? Gita
Also---
I CANNOT find the sandwich bag-full of my Tropical Milkweed seeds I took.
Bummer! They are nowhere to be seen! I collected quite a lot....
SO--whomever asked for some--or plan to ask--I do not have them....yet....
They are NOT among the stash on my DR table that I have now been working on forever!
G.
That is OK Gita, We will get them at the swap. Thanks
Holly, I too appreciate your generosity with those marigolds in the past! I know it's not just the purchase price -- you have to repot all those little seedlings from the open-seeded flats. 6-packs will be much easier!
fwiw, Burpee's has 50 'French Vanilla' hybrid marigold seeds for about $6.
Critter, did you get the e-mail? Well we are planning on getting some extra sweet cream marigolds. I can get 36 plants for $10.60. So for 1/2 the cost of the open seeded flat I can get over 100 plants. Still plenty to share but not the unlimited numbers I've had in the past.
Yes, I saw the email but didn't have a chance to check the list yet. I'm definitely in for some of those! Thx
I am looking for some seeds for a Horticultural Therapy program. It is for mentally or physically challenged adults age 21 up. I'd like tomatoes, cherry or grape tomatoes, mixed lettuce, peas, pumpkins, and other veggies, nasturtiums and some flower seeds that would do well in containers. I would like seeds that are not too old as we want good germination so they don't get too disappointed if they don't come up. Thanks
sorry for my confusion, Holly... I got your Dmail but i don't see an email with a link in my in box... could you please re-send? Thanks!
Holly---
Is there a deadline for the seeds you are collecting? if so--when?
I always have oodles of seeds. Be glad to donate some.
LMK. Gita
Gita, I will get them at the seed swap. It is a small group of about 35 adults and there will be a small veggie garden and raised boxes. I don't need too many plants, but that was the wish list that they gave me. Thanks.
Go for EDIBLE flowers, like your nasturtiums, bee balm (you probably have a clump you could get root cuttings from), pansies (the blue ones have the best flavor... I think signet marigolds are edible; I'll try to test germination on my 'Lemon Gem' seeds before the swap. I have pumpkin -- both pie pumpkins and Joyanna's Halloween pumpkin (a big, thick-walled one with almost no pumpkin guts). The newest tomato seeds I have are for a round red hybrid, but a "normal" tomato might be what you're after for this crew anyway.
LOL, we'll fix you up!
We discussed edible flowers and decided not to go there. We loved the idea and were headed down that path with a great list and then realized that the participants might get the idea that all flowers were edible and we decided maybe we should stay away from that idea.
Critter did you get the new e-mail I sent you?
No I didn't, and I can't figure out where Thunderbird could have put it. Good point about edible flowers -- all it takes is one person not "getting it," and you could have a problem.
I've been procrastinating (distracted) about putting in a Burpee's order, but their free ship offer is still in effect. (Or I can do their $10 off coupon for signing up for their newsletter, if I order $40 in seeds.) I want nasturtiums! but I don't need 50 seeds... if you're willing to split a pack or interested in splitting other seeds (hybrid cukes, perhaps?), please zip over to our seed buying thread (just to keep admin happy).

For you all---
One of the new seeds i will be offering is of Viburnum "Brandywine" nudum
whose dried up berries I harvested last fall at the HD.
Not knowing what it looks like, or any other information, I asked for answers
on the Trees and Shrubs Forum.
"Viburnum Valley" gave lengthy, valuable information on this Viburnum.
For those of you who might want to have this shrub--I am posting the link to
this Thread. Please read it through, (just 4 posts) and if NONE of you are
interested in planting these seeds--I will remove them from my stash--
as they are bulky, dried clumps of berries.
Those of you with some acreage to plant this beautiful shrub, may want to try it.
According to VV--it requires a wet location.

Took me a very long time to find some pictures to attach to the seed baggie,
but here they are.

Gita, I would love to try some Viburnum nudum seeds.
David---
I was SOOO thinking that YOU, of all people, will say you wanted some of these seeds.
You have 33 acres--yes? Must be a moist spot somewhere....
I must say, that these shrubs sat and sat on a table at HD. I had to water them all...
No one wanted them. They were not much to look at.....NO curb appeal at all..
They were BIG and potted in about a 5 or 7 gal pots.
Then clearancing time came. They were half off. (I think they were $29,99 or maybe $39.99)
and they still sat there--in a pile--outside the garden gate.
I am sure they had many years on them--as they were about 5' tall. How many years??
Wish you had come---you could have grabbed them up.
OK, David--I will bring my stash and you can help yourself.
Gita
Thanks Gita! By the way, you have been misled; we have about 3.3 acres. not 33. (We wish)
OK! So far--here are some NEW seeds i will have.
Need to start my haves and "Promised to'...
1--Red Crape Myrtle berries--"Tonto"
2--Nre England Aster "fluff'.
3--Blue Liatris
4--Giant, Purple Amaranth
5--Lady-in--Red Salvia coccinea
6--Melampodium ("Butter daisy")
7--Rudbeckia "Indian Summer"--seed from Karen
8--White Cream marigolds (like Holly's)
9--"Yellow Pear" cherry tomato.
10--Short growing, pink Canna corms--suitable for containers.
11--Viburnum :Brandywine"--nudum
That's about IT for NEW--unless I find my baggie of Tropical Milkweed....
***NOTE***
No one need to reserve any of these. There is plenty to pick from.
However--expressing a "want" will save time as then i will be able to just drop it into your bag.
Gita
David--
OH! I DID get the numbers right--just the decimal point was wrong....;o)
Not misled.....just confusing YOU with Aspenhill.
They have 33 acres--I believe. Much of it wooded.
Sorry! G.
I have a Brandywine and it does fine in a medium moisture site. Just an fyi. Very beautiful for sure. Gita, do you have a pollinator for it?
Jeff--
I DO NOT have this shrub! There would not be room for anything like a shrub
in my garden! You need to come visit to get an idea what i am talking about,
I just harvested the seeds from one at the HD.last fall.
In V.V. post-- in link below--he offers pictures and notes on possible pollinators.
Please open his link to read it and see the pictures.

Gita
Oh ok, I didn't know if you had one. My Brandywine partner is Winterthur. I was going to ask you if you got a lot of berries from the Winterthur because mine barely had any.
Least I can do is take your leftover Viburnum berries and let them loose in my sedimentation clearing "restoration" area, swampy acid soil, ; maybe Muddy will take some for her forest.
Sally--
There will be plenty Viburnum "seeds" to go around. You can take as many as you want....
Now--once it is past the infancy stage-like in 2-3 years---you will have to
get a proper "suitor'--eg " V.Winterthur"-- to cross-pollinate yours with. Or--NO berries!!!
Then--we can have arranged nuptials here....I will bring some wine.
This shrub IS pretty--and YOU DO HAVE a moist area in the back.
Just pick up some of the old berries and toss them around. Then.....wait...
By the time you are 55, you should have a nice sized shrub "doing its thing"...
I KNOW you have patience, Sally, as you have lived through years of the WS
shrub growing to adulthood. I know you can do it!
Did you read? David wants some! If David wants some---it must be something special...
Scuse me but I'm already 55. Ha so cute about the nuptials!
No I have zero room for another shrub. My yard only has one very moist area and of course it is full already. My sandy loam, trees roots all around and slight elevation over neighbor yards means most areas get too dry. And trees means most is part shade.
I might sink a pot of seeds just to see if I can get sprouts. The rest I am going to let loose to enhance some trashed 'forest restoration' area, before all the invasives get there.
I was going to say that Sally would have to wait 20 more years for that Viburnum to be full grown when she was 55 :)
AARRGGHHH!
Sally--did not know you were already THAT old!!!! :o)
says one who will be 78 in March.
Looking for my walker so i can go make myself another Margareta,,,,
As I am slowly falling asleep....
I only have 8 hours right now on Sundays. No more for the rest of the week!
ALL this free time! Almost done with organizing seeds...
SO--I am thinking I need to make a batch of of serious Chicken Stock or Soup.
Running low in my freezer stash on this. Going to Richardson Farms tomorrow,,,,
Maybe--Gershbecks. Their meats are always super fresh.!.
Need NBONES!!!! Necks!!! anything they would discard...Great for Soup!
Haaa...Haaa.....Gita
Gita, I'd love to try some of the Viburnum berries -- that was a great seed snatch! I'd like a couple of Cana corms also, please, if you have enough to go around... maybe you can trade them to Joyanna... she's going to have "pinks" (Dianthus) to share this year. :-)
Okey dokey! Will put you down for both.
A word of warning re the pink Cannas. Cute!-but they make massive roots
Also-- it never stopped blooming...just grew more roots and bloomed away.
I had this Canna in the middle of my big planter--(the one the Wren made a nest in)
and had to dump out the whole pot to attempt to extricate the corms/rhizomes (?)
from the soil. It was a hard job!
I had planted other things in there as well--which made it more complicated.
I have a smaller pot of these I gave up on--I just put it in my shed.
Will see if they survived the cold. I would think the shed would be a bit protective.
IF anyone is interested--I have 7 seeds (like big Lima beans) of Chinese Wisteria.
While in NJ for Christmas. my sister took me to a local, public park
that used to be someone's mansions but was donated to the County and turned
into a Park.
One such a park had this Massive Chinese Wisteria, panted in 1939, that had
enveloped the whole building. I would love to see it in bloom!
It says on the sign they hols a concert there in the spring, sitting under all the blooms.
I picked up a couple seed pods laying on the ground. G.
Wow, wonder if that Canna would just keep blooming if I took it into the sunroom for the winter? I like vigorous plants! :-)
