this was outside the north 'wall' last year...and an arch wall in sept of 11, well, I just love buildong walls with sunflowers and vines..he got me another arch, it has sweet autumn clematis, john clayton honey suckle and passion vine on it, but in the beginning of my patio adventures, always poles first, sunflowers and vines next. front porch green wall is always honeysuckle, roses and morning glorys. 4th pic is june 2012, last pic is march 2013..( the month I start planning with the poles and yarn and stuff.) so, there are some of my ideas for a living wall of sorts. Have a great day ! PSSST I saw a Robin this am ;)
Plant Propagation - The Basics , continued
That is pretty cool Debra. Every year being different really uses your imagination. I like the arch way a whole lot, and the red on the porch must be the roses. I love the tall sunflowers. Those are really tall. Thanks for sharing. Jen
Hey Everyone, I thought I would pop in and ask what is your fastest growing, prettiest plant for screening?
I have an area that really needs a tall screen 6-10' tall would be ideal and it needs to grow in a hurry to block a neighbors pool area.
Last year i planted passiflora caerulea, and it worked well for a while, but then it got spindly and grew more into the area I didn't want it, than the area I did.
My conditions are part shade, dry sandy soil............
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I have missed you all.
Linda
Hi, Linda!
Have you tried clematis? Do they grow in your area?
Hi Everyone, Jnette, you are right, I haven't been here in a year or more. It has been a crazy year at that.
Things are going well, I am doing private gardening for a couple of clients and the family is doing ok. Hubby had 3 surgeries back to back last march, and Son just had surgery last week to repair a torn ligament in his elbow.
I am looking for part time work. I don't want to give up my gardening clients, but i do miss being around people and having a more steady income.
Debra, I like the idea of sunflowers and Morning glories. Those are 2 of my favorites and they both grow really fast.
I have some large gardenia's there, as a background but I need to plant something in front of them. They aren't quite tall or full enough.
Evelyn, Clematis do grow here, but they are so spindly ( at least mine have been) that it would take forever for them to fill in the area I want.
jnette, you are right, I love crape myrtle. This area just doesn't get enough sun for them to bloom. Maybe tomorrow, I will take pics and you can see where I am talking about.
Thanks for the ideas though.
Hi Linda..
I am always thinking flowering... although there are lots of other great screens... but with that in mind...
How about a Vibernum? some will reach 10' and some of them have gorgeous flowers. Mountain laurel is also pretty and I believe they grow 8-10', Mock-orange also comes to mind - they can reach 12' and smell so pretty when in flower. I think all will do well in your zone. Nancy
Viburnum is a wonderful suggestion Nancy. There are so many different ones too. And the leaves on some of them are almost like blossoms at different times of the year. I love them. Or even Hydrangeas. Some of them get real tall too. What is the nursery that sends out the catalogs for Perennials and shrubs etc. Blue something. They have great plants. I can't believe I am having a brain freeze.
Bluestone Perennials??
Ligustrums (Chinese Privet) not always real fast growers , But Fragrant bloomers with different types of flowering ...
Yes Evelyn. Think that's right. Think Bluestone has such a good selection.
Yours is good to JU. There is a variegated Boxwood that gets pretty high, not sure if it is that high or not, but when it blooms you can smell it for a long way off. Look at it and it is covered with bees. They love those flowers. Jen
I hadn't thought of Viburnum. That is a great idea. I have a lot of hydrangea rooting that I can plant there in the spring too. The ligustrum, I have as a perimeter border shrub through out most of the rest of the yard, so that one isn't really an option. I sure wish I could get away with an eleagnus hedge there.
I hadn't thought about Bluestone either. I need to check their website.
Thanks everyone. I will let you know what I decide to use.
I know your saying your done but do or would the flowering Willows grow where you are ,,
Desert Flowering willow , or more tropical willow . or maybe the Giant type Hibiscus , tropicals get huge as in tree type
I haven't ever seen the desert flowering willow here, and the hibiscus I have grown ( except for confederate rose) only grow about 4 feet tall.
I will look up the desert flowering willow and see what I can find out about it. I am always up for a challenge.
Just looked it up, I need to find one or 5 of those.
Never here except as Bonsai ,, Most say it is a pretty plant with a small amount of keeping it tidy I have heard some say theirs did not bloom , others that theirs was beautiful .
As always , finding a good choice is the concern ,,
Hardy to 10 degrees or so most say .. Evergreen also , I had seen a few in Texas years ago before I knew what they were ,, Good luck with looking
I suppose looking it up through it's scientific name might create options ..
Another thought was Georgia vines trees and shrubs , seeds or plants ,,
There is a japanese boxwood or hollyleaf that grows to 12 ft like a lombardy poplar shape ,, Gardenia shrub tree to about 8 or 10 ft ,,
All depends on what your zone is ,, you might find more choices there ,,
See , like always Ibartoo , now that your done ,, I am full of ideas ,, I do that to myself also ,, lol ,, Hmmmmmmmm
Can't believe all the help you got on that one Linda. Hope you get a nice hedge. LOL, jen
Don't be done, I want to give suggestions (I want to play). I was waiting for some pics of the area, the square footage and your growing zone...
LOL, Linda don't run out and buy anything. Mipii wants her input. LOL, jen
I am loving all this help. Thank you all so much.
I have some gardenias planted in part of the area and some camellias in another. The problem is they are just not tall enough. I would really like to make a solid block in this area and then a lighter ( not so permanent hedge in the other area where the neighbors pool is.
Part of the problem is that this neighbor "watches" everything we do in the yard and especially my son and his friends. Then I hear about what we have done and conversations we have had. It has gotten to the point that a cement wall would be welcome.
Sounds like your neighbor would be making openings where the plants would be anyway , peering through the bottom spaces ,,
Another Brick in the wall ,,
Sounds Like some 8ft fence at auction , or perhaps real tall 8 or 10 ft stakes mortar into concrete blocks ,, green garden wire ,run a few ft ,, and then vines ,, all kinds and types of those ,,
From Dutchmans pipe through ? Autumn Clematis would cover in two seasons while giving other choices possibility ,,
Couple weeks in fall it would look like a white wall
yes I am rambling ,, So many tropical near tropical plantsI have not tried or ever grown ,,lol

Juhur, you are probably right! That is one reason I was really thinking of tall plants with something growing in between. For this year, I might do maximillian sunflowers and interplant them with vines. Then see if things improve. then I will feed the bejeebers out of the shrubs that are there and fill the area in with lots of orchid cacti/dragonfruit and bushy annuals like tithonia. Anything has to help.
I don't have the sweet autumn clematis, but I love the way it smells when it blooms. I may have to put 1 of those in there somewhere too.
Have you ever grown the dutchmans pipe vine, If not you will love it. I have some seeds if you are interested.
Hope you are having a great sunday.
I would like to try , I have figure out a place to grow one or two ,,I will have to see what I have to trade , and it is snowing here again ,, Not much more I can do now ,
parsley , petunia , Agave bamboo , snapdragons , the seedlings are about all I can take of at the moment
Then I will see in spring about the dozen winter sown containers I have outside ,,
The autumn clematis I have grew wild where it is ,it is four years old and looks like a giant bush
Winter picture , this about 7ft tall by 5ft approx ,, not a real good winter pic of autumn clematis
About four years old , and it been near this since 2 yrs ,,
Juhur, I grow my dutchman's pipe in a hanging basket. you can then put it almost anywhere. Mine gets very filtered light ( massive live oak tree overhead and lots of baskets next to it. It seems to thrive there. The a.elegans grows about 3 feet long in my hanging basket. A. fimbriata, the white veined variety gets longer, but lives in a hanging basket as well. I also have a. Gigantea ( if it comes back), but it is planted in the ground. It gets massive. I keep it in filtered light as well.
If you want to try it, remind me when it is planting time for you and i will share some seeds.
Ibartoo Same if your interested in the Autumn clematis ,, I have not had much luck with starting more from the three I have , There might be something else around here also ,,
Got a question for you two. Why can't you plant vines in the same hole, place, that you are planting something else? i.e. Unintentionally I ended up with a Clematis in the same hole as a Honey Suckle. But, I was thinking more like a Clematis planted with a Black Lace Elderberry. Or something like that. Climbing roses with other climbers planted with them.
Dutchman's Pipe planted with something. Another real strong growing vine is the Cobeas. Cup and Saucers. I just love those vines. They are tough! I have only seen two colors of their flowers, purple and white. The white has a green tint to it. I think they grow 25 feet.
Another thing, Linda grows the most fabulous Lantana shrubs. I couldn't even imagine them growing here. They are beautiful. But, I couldn't get the seeds to germinate. Jen
Edit: Just remembered what the name of that Clematis was that I was going to plant with my Black Elderberry. Nelly Mosier. You know what color she blooms, well the flower clusters on the black leafed tree are pink.

You can as long as the soil is good and the roots do not crowd each other ..
as always , somethings grow together ,somethings cannot .
If you alternate flowering shrubs with evergreens, you can have a vase shape next to a pyramid or columnar shape, filling in the entire linear space. The flowering shrubs can be closer to your viewing area and the evergreens as a backdrop. For interim privacy grow Wheatstraw Celosia, its fast and tall. Pampas or other tall ornamental grasses grow fast also.
If what you grow has some width to it the more privacy you will gain (better sound and visual barrier).
Jnette, I can plant things together, but in my sandy ( think beach) soil 1 always tends to outgrow the other.
My soil is like beach sand. I have spent countless hours and $ trying to build it up, but whatever I do seems to filter through leaving me nothing but sand. It hasn't been a complete loss though, someone in "china" has wonderful soil.
Mipii, I like the way you think. With the gardenia and camellias already there, I am really looking for something to plant in front of them. My borders are about 6 or 8 feet wide.
I do have a blue clock vine, planted on a grapefruit tree. I thought I had lost the tree in a freeze last year, so I determined just to use the stem as a trellis for the blue clock vine. The grapefruit wasn't dead, just burned, so it came back out.
The clock vine didn't bloom last year, but this year I am very hopeful.
This grapefruit tree is planted between a couple of the camellias. ( hubby's idea) I would have gotten rid of it, but it was given to us and he wanted to keep it. It is too cold for it here. The leaves and stems freeze and burn ever year, so it won't ever make fruit, and the thorns are massive. It might have to go this spring................
Pampas grass is beautiful in someone elses yard. LOL The blades are like sandpaper and I have been burned many times on Mom's trying to get something out of it ( ie the puppy) or working to control it. Here they get massive.
Yes, and they are a good home for rats. In the South I think Palmetto bugs. Yuck!!
Well, you guys in the path of the big storm coming up, batten your hatches and stay in. Put the snow shovels where you can get to them. But of all things, stay in until it's over. Be careful.
Jen
Yes, what Jen said. Stay indoors and find a great book.
Jen, the palmetto bugs are awful! They are everywhere. It is worse that they also fly.
Yes like Florida ,, " Hey There are Giant Flying Roaches " lol
Lots of grasses will get 7 to 9 ft tall ,, Reed Grass , Plume Grass ,,Amaranth , Wheat type straw grass a prairrie grass I don't know the name of ..
Not the snow that is so bad ,, Wind &Rain & and Ice 75 mph winds should pack it nicely ,, Freezing it to poles , sides of buildings. overhangs, traffic lights ,, you name it ,,
Not so bad here , last , night , this morning ,, thin layer of snow over a thin layer of ice.. gone now ,, gooooood ,,,
Jingle Bells ,, winter smells ,,, The ice you say ! ,,,
If I had a sandy area, I would go to Dollar tree and buy a drink tub holder, they are about 24 inches deep and 36 inches round, usually with handles, I'd dig an area and sink it punch some holes in the bottom and fil it up with rocks on the bottom and soil for planting on the rest. I have done that here since I have clay and made bog gardens. I always have more than one vine planted together here.,. no problems. Good luck to all those up there getting ready for snow and blizzards.
I didn't know bamboo made seeds! yippee! and congrats on your babes..
New on congrats on yours also Debra !!! The one your holding ,,
Some Bamboo will make seeds as a grass they are ,, Some , only once every several hundred years ,, That they make seeds .
Info on Giant Bamboo , is whole forests will grow and die off at the same time , seeds fall more than rain , Those are good to practice with as they are production grown in rotation ,, Most of the time the seeds are older ,, However ,, Science has germinated prehistoric grass seed ,, So if wait long enough , most germinate sooner or later ,, ( goes that way with me anyway)
If you have the patience , Of course it can be like waiting for the Dinosaurs to return or a Bulldog attached to your backside if your in any hurry to see them ,, 2 yrs about , is the longest I have waited and got germination ,,
well, these days, I want instant "show" on any seed I plant LMAO. I did have a saw palm seed planted that took a year to pop up and then I had forgotten I planted it, so that is what happens a lot around here.
I am like that also really , want to see the seeds grow , When they sprout overnight , I am delighted , !!!
Hibiscus Seedlings , Cross of Big Red and ? . Little seed trying is a Red Agave , others at random are probably Snapdragons ,, it happens . I know what the other Hibiscus it is crossed with is ,, can't tell though , it is a secret ,,
These are my own seeds ,, proving also Hibiscus need no stratification , a few weeks of cool drying is all ,,

I don't know when I became like that. I want to plant the seeds and then see them sprout the next day. Baby brother is growing bamboo. I tried once, but must not have waited long enough. The ones that drive me nuts are those that take 3 months to germinate. I always forget about them .
Most who grow Bamboo say it takes two to three weeks for sprouts ,, Rarely have I had that happen ,,
Some have the gift , some do not ,,
Me .. it drags on If I watch sometimes , So I just water every few days , take a quick look for anything new , and go on with I am doing or contemplating ,
I always hope they grow , if not , oh well ... Good patience , and knowing not all is always perfect ,,
and yes , sometimes it has driven me crazy ,, Anything beyond 6 or 8 weeks is really to long to wait for most to sprout ,,
