Full blown flu symptoms this AM. I'm miserable enough to rethink the idea of getting the shots. When I was in the service I ended up in the hospital 2 years in a row. The shots were mandatory then.
Your Neck of the Woods part 14
Sorry, Ric! gentle hugs & hopes for a quick recovery with no hospital visit!
Holly, good for you! I'm back to using the trackers on Spark People. Counting calories and balancing carbs with protein works for me... if I don't count, I end up eating too little when dieting, and then it seems my body holds on to every bit!
Holly--
What is the "plank challenge"?
Also--the "water intake" with all the additives. Do you mix a lg. amount of that
and then drink a cup or so when thirsty?
A woman at work pots mint and cucumber slices (anything else???) in her water
and loves it. I have given here all my mint plants.
Ashamed to admit it, but I LIVE by snacking or grazing--and, most of the time,
it will be sweets. Except--i am totally hooked on Dry Roasted Peas.
Richardson Farms sells those in bags. They are delicious! I always crave crunchy things.
And--I won't talk about how much I love my home made margaritas
and chocolates....♥
If I HAD TO--and followed your regiment--I would lose some weight for sure.
My wight is usually pretty steady--but it is a bit more that i would like.
Hasn't changed much in years--the fat just has relocated.....:o.
Come summer and i start gardening--at home and at work--I will tone up a bit.
On the "healthier" side--
-I do not use or eat canned anything--cook my own food
-I do not eat out-and NEVER go to fast food places.
-I do not drink any sodas--usually Apple Cider. yes! lots of sugars there..
-I DO eat a lot of fruits and carrots. LOVE melons! Need to eat more salads!...
--I never bake--as i would eat it all.. but I DO crave such sweets. Oh, well....
G.
Gita, here's a link to the plank challenge.http://30dayfitnesschallenges.com/30-day-plank-challenge/
It's supposed to build core muscles.
So sorry you're feeling bad Ric!
Ideally, when all those who have no reaction and want to get a flu shot, DO, then those who can't or won't, have a much smaller risk. Got my fingers crossed for it anyway.
Gita, You are in great shape.
I put the ingredients into a pitcher in the evening and let it steep overnight then pour into glasses until empty. Then fill it up for the next day. I am suppose to switch out the ingredients after 2 days.
Hope you feel better Ric! My throat is a little scratchy today but I can't tell if it's the beginnings of something or just all the try air in the house.
Holly--
And--what does this water treatment contribute to your body? Just curious....
I could do that easily--as I always take a big bottle-full of water
to work--I flavor it with crystal Light lemon powder.
Thanks-G.
Gita, They call it the Flat Tummy Water.
Cucumbers:
They are low in calories, act as a diuretic, high in dietary in fiber, and help keep the body alkaline. Cucumbers are a perfect weight loss food.
Ginger:
A study from the Institute for Human Nutrition at Columbia University showed that when participants drank a hot beverage with ginger, they felt more full and had less chance of overeating.
Lemon:
They are high in pectin fiber, which helps suppress food cravings. It also helps the body eliminate waste products by cleansing and detoxifying it. Lemons are alkaline forming and will aid with weight loss.
Mint:
Is an appetite suppressant. Not only will it give the water a refreshing flavor it will stop food cravings too.
So not that I believe that drinking all this water will make my tummy disappear, but I really have trouble drinking my 6-8 glasses of water each day. I know that just drinking water will suppress appetite. So I thought I would try it and I like the taste, it feels refreshing and it does seem to keep me from snacking. Just a regular glass of water would probably help keep me from snacking.
There were different comments on it like don't use it for more than a month, don't use it for more than a week and use it only every other day. Not sure why those type of restrictions were mentioned, certainly I wouldn't see the need but I will see how I feel and let you know.
Ric, I hope you feel better soon!
Wow, doing 5 minutes of planks per day sounds kind of tough. I take it that one is allowed to take breaks after, say, 1 minute.
I find it interesting that many of the exercises I had to do in P.E. when I was in school are often-recommended exercises today: "burpees" (we used to call them jump squats), sit ups (better than crunches), jumping jacks, jump roping, leg lifts and push ups (planks are better IMO).
I can't even image that I could do 3-5 min of plank but right now I have 1 min down. We will see how far I can get. Yes, you are suppose to work up to a full 5 min plank.
Well---
My body is NOT be doing any of that "plank'....too many parts don't work
or hurt--feet, knees, hip....
At my age--this would be detrimental.
Holly--how much of what goes in the water. I'd like to try that.
Grabbing a glass of water now and then should not be hard.
Must it be fresh mint? Hard to come by this time of year.
Would mint be still green in all this cold weather? I have some Spearmint in one bed.
I have lots of dried.....but it is old...
G.
1 sliced lemon
1 sliced med cucumber
1/2 cup fresh mint (I bought a bunch from the store for about 1$)
1 Tbsp grated ginger (I didn't bother with the ginger)
Fill up your pitcher in the evening and let it infuse overnight and Drink the next day. You can refill the pitcher again. They say change the ingredients every 2 days.
Thanks, Holly--
Yes! The fat tummy is the problem. There is no waist!
Nowadays--it is VERY hard to find pants and jeans that come up to my waist.
I HATE the lower cut jeans! They always slide down to under my belly.
Even the ones called "comfort fit" seem to slide down.
I am always pulling up my pants.....
One has to have a perfectly flat tummy for them to sit at he hips and feel good.
Gloria Vanderbilt jeans fit me the best---but even they are a bit below the waist.
At home--I live in sweat pants or knit pants with an elastic waist. Comfort counts.
G.
Gita, Maybe you could try suspenders? I think they are called "braces" in Europe.
Wellllll I on't think I would go for that.....
Not too many women wear suspenders. To me that seems a bit "butch".
Something Guys wear....Gita
Oh WOW you should see these trees. Truly amazing. Hope this link works for you.

WOW--WOW---WOW!!!!!!!
Where did you find this link????

The Earth is so full of wonders!! Gita
WOW!!! Those are SOME trees
fantastic awesome pictures and trees!
Thanks, Holly - What gorgeous photos!
A friend posted it on Facebook. I thought it was a great site. Can't wait to have more time to check it out a bit more.
I had a very interesting night. I was invited to see the Preview of An American Sniper. For those of you that don't know the story, It was based on the autobiography of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle. They are previewing the movie on Military Bases, giving out free passes on base. I went with my friend wife of a Veteran. I was honored to watch this movie with a theater full of military families. The theater played "The Star-Spangled Banner" before the movie. Everyone on their feet in a second not a straggler in the bunch. It is not a feel good movie and many of the scenes were hard to watch but I thought it was a very good movie and would recommend it to any adult. If you don't know the story of Chris Kyle he was killed not in battle but by a person that he was trying to help that was suffering with PTSD. At the end of the movie there wasn't a sound in the theater. I have never been in a theater that was so quiet as everyone filtered out.
wow Holly, We've seen the preview twice and it does look good. I have seen the book every week at the library as it sits right on the end of a shelf (end of the K biographies)
I heard that when Bradley Cooper met Chris' dad, before filming, Dad said "Well we gotta tie you to the back of my pickup and drag some of that pretty off you"
I'm watching Raising Arizona on DVD. I worked today and then took the sink off the wall and started touching up the drywall. and placed my order for sink, toilet and faucet.
Sally a good bit covered his time in combat and it sure wasn't pretty, but it would flip back and forth between his childhood, family life and his combat time. As I said hard to watch but very good.
Gorgeous Holly!
Starting out really cold. DS tried to go for a bike ride-
he admitted defeat. It must have been about 10 degrees.
It is 18* out there right now but I think it was colder earlier this morning. I was just out filling the bird feeders and setting up the deer feeder, I will put some corn in it tonight just before dark to keep the squirrels from getting in it today. Been mildly productive this morning, got a few more things moved into the upstairs room and going to do a bit more. I have an agenda for today.
Yea me, I did a 90 sec plank today, Day 12 of my 30 day Plank Challenge.

Great photos, Holly. It's nice to see some beauty in winter. Good for you for sticking with the Plank Challenge!
If the weather is good enough I will be heading to the Farm Show with the Grands. Lily's class room goes as a school trip, younger brother Lucas is coming along as well and my son "the great Unk Josh" is coming, too. The Pa. Farm Show is a huge event lots to see and do plus some of the best food around. There are all the normal farm animals to see and touch, draft horses, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and all kinds of fowl, rabbits, plus peacocks, lamas, emu, long horn cattle. You can pet the rabbits, watch baby chicks peck their was out of their shells, the ducklings have a little slide into the water and the just go round and round in the water and back out to the slide again. There is a sheep to shawl contest, horse pulling, tractor square dancing, all kinds of animal judging, precision riding, many different 4-H displays and competitions not to forget the food judging, and an entire huge Hall filled with tractors and other farm equipment that the kids can climb all over.
They have very yummy baked potatoes, the dairy assoc has a milkshake stand and sell sundaes on a stick. The 4-H kids have a pizza stand, pork growers have pork barbeque, the beef growers have roast beef, the maple sugar producers have maple candy and my fav maple sugar cotton candy. Then there are all the other food stands fried veggies, fried cheese, fried pickles, a multitude of flavored bacon just to mention a few. So I will be braving the unclean hoards, and temptation (I already know I will be eating many of those things today, especially the maple sugar cotton candy). Just to have a great day with my Grands, the sacrifices we have to make.
haha, Holly, it all sounds wonderful!
I am jealous!!!! I always enjoyed going with my dad to the farm show. Memories!!!! Have a wonderful day!!!!! Do tell later about all the yummies you had.
Well, Jeff has a two hour delay today. Looks like the local schools started on time.
Well not as wonderful as I had hoped. They are having a 2 hr delay so the field trip is canceled for today. Not sure yet if they are rescheduling.
Bummer!!!!
That sounded like such a cool event, too, Holly. Hope they reschedule. I looked on line and could not see any ticket prices except for the rodeo and a $10-per-car parking fee. Is there an admission fee?
Addmission is free, There is a $10 parking fee.

Thanks, Holly. What a great deal. And the food part even lists what each vendor is selling.
If you want to read an interesting documentary of an old, eccentric lady,
known as the "Eagle lady" of Homer, AK. take a look at these links.
She had a house on the Homer Spit. off limits--but Ok to look over the fences.

http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/JeanKeene.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjWcFMBEm0U
I was there in 2006 and took some photos of her house and yard.
Bizarre--to say the least.very eccentric--all fenced in but you could see
over the fencing. She did care for the Eagles--but one would question her sanity???
Everywhere--there were figurines and toys and all kinds of stuff.
Here are my pictures....G.
wonder where she stored it all during those long winters? eccentric, yep.
I sent out a bunch of Dmails last night... trying to gather some DG "family" for a friend who is getting married today. She is a long-time DGer, a woman with a huge heart and a smile that lights up a room.
She's getting hitched in MD for paperwork reasons, date moved up because the logistics suddenly came together & they didn't want to wait. Anyway, I'm taking them to dinner tonight and would love to gather some more folks for the Occasion.
6:30, at Chef Lin in Frederick.
*whups, edited to remove names so as not to tip off any no-gooders that she's out of town.

Sorry Critter, Ric and I can't come, I'm not feeling well.
