Your Neck of the Woods part 14

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I think I see Freesias in there; I love their scent.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

lovely!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I thought Freesias too, but Holly thinks Tuberose.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Hmmm...the nose should know : - )

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

We went to see 'Unbroken" last night. Very good. I only read part of the book. The movie shows Zamperini's early life (track star went to Olympics in Germany in the 30s) as flashbacks between events in his time as a WW II bombardier, ditched in the ocean on a life raft for =/- 48 days, then Japanese prison camps until end of the war. So it's a story of surviving intense hardships, so it really shows the hardships (some critic say too much ). Later in life he forgives his captors. The flying scenes were really intense and 'first person" so we were glad we went to the theater on this one.

I had decided to splurge and get popcorn, and a drink in case my throat tickled. 6$ for a bag of popcorn just a bit bigger than the microwave kind, and 4 for a bottle of water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they were really skimpy on the artery clogging popcorn 'butter' too. It's gonna be a LONNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG time before I buy any food at the theater again.

Before this we saw Gone Girl, which might be on Netflix by now? Excellent.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Happy New Year, everyone! May the next 3 months fly by as quickly as 2014 did.

Sally, that was a lot of money....probably as much, or almost as much, as the ticket price.

Thanks for the recommendation about Gone Girl; I don't think I've seen that one. I'm a big fan of in-home movies, even though I miss some I'd probably like because my husband will go to the theater alone if he wants to see a new release.

For those who haven't watched it yet, I recommend watching "The Interview", especially if you can stream it or download it some other way. I wouldn't have watched this movie if there hadn't been so much uproar over it, because it has too much adolescent humor and fake gore for my liking, but the plot and characters were engaging enough to keep me watching. Plus, I had nothing better to do and my DD and her boyfriend wanted to see it : - )

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, I really want to see Unbroken, I've seen a lot of the behind the scenes production clips and interviews. They just had Ben Affleck on the Morning News that looked like a good pic, too. We hardly ever go to the Movie theater, mostly wait till we can Netflix it. I think Ric and I might do lunch and a movie next week.
So I think that I will never see the movie Maleficent, not that it is great Cinematography, but I just can't seem to actually watch it. My daughter bought the DVD and said it was good. So on the flight to Mexico it was the inflight movie. But I hadn't brought my headphones with me and didn't want to spend $5 to purchase theirs. Then at the resort they were showing the movie one evening open air movie set up near the beach, but Ric and I were just too tired to bother to go. Came home visiting Julie and said "Oh, can I borrow Maleficent" nope she had loaned it to a friend and hadn't gotten it back. So last week I was looking at movies to order from Netflix and decided to get it. Yep, It came in yesterdays mail and guess what.......it was broken. Now in all the years that we have been getting Netflix movies we had only once received one that was broken so what is the chances that we would get another one and it would be the elusive Maleficent.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Mike, Lowell, Suzanne, and I went to see Unbroken on the day after Christmas to celebrate her birthday. Late afternoon showing and then dinner afterwards. We rarely go to the movies, maybe three times a year if that. I usually watch them at home on directv. I really enjoy seeing them in the theater though. Sally's description of Unbroken was spot on. It was pretty intense and all based on the true story of one man's life experience.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha Holly, Maleficient is really cursed for you!!
We had three broken discs in a row last year from Netflix. Bad luck I guess.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha...very funny Holly! Guess it wasn't meant to be. My wife and I are big Red Box fans. Between last weekend and yesterday we watched Expendables 3, November Man, 22 Jump Street, and Equalizer. All very good. I have a Red Box app on my phone where I can reserve a movie at a local box and then pick it up whenever it's convenient that day. Pretty sweet.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I watched Maleficent as an inflight movie. For some reason I had thought I wouldn't like it, but I did.

We rarely go to the theater. I WOULD like to see The Hobbit movie.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

By the way, did I say that the movie theater complex was really quiet on New Years Eve? Love not being in a crowd.
We do Red Box at times- that app sounds fabulous

Hey, Jeff or Ric and Holly- do you know a good car body shop near Mechanicsburg? I used my DD car and my co-worker opened her car door while I was parking and got a dent in the front quarter panel. Geico gave us a check for repair but if she wants to get it done she'll need to do it while she's there at school. Plus it may be a bit cheaper to have it done there rather than in Annapolis, where the auto body place that did the estimate has a huge beautiful waiting room like a doctors office!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't get out to Mechanicsburg. There's a good place in Lancaster though ;-P

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Red box is so affordable. It's a great way to watch movies that are not on Netflix.

I just saw Interstellar and absolutely loved it, but my husband was bored out of his mind and actually fell asleep twice. The cinematography is so spectacular that it needs to be seen in the theaters, imho.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, This is who our insurer often uses, we have be satisfied with their work. I think they may have a West Shore drop off point, but I'm not sure. They do all makes and models. Sutliff Chevrolet Collision Center, Phone: (800) 201-7240.

P.S. She may be able to use public transportation to go to and fro. I think there are CAT buses go as far as her school.

P.S.S. Holly said we could run her if you like, or loan her, her car I think she has met us both at the swap.

SSG, I saw Interstellar in the theatres and I too was bored to death. When it was over, I was wondering if I could get a refund on the 3 wasted hours of my life. I read the reviews on it though and many people really liked it so maybe there was something I was missing.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Wayne liked Interstellar and wants to see it big screen a second time, so I will go with him this week before it leaves our local theaters. I'm very interested to have a backdrop for contemplating other dimensions virtually. May or may not get a bag of popcorn for the adventure.

We also will see the Hobbit as we have seen the others and are fans along with our daughter and DGSons (Star Wars being the other overarching movie series we all enjoy and are imho worth seeing in a theater.

Yesterday we saw Imitation Game. Lots of good questions raised by this based on a true story film: the power of secrets revealed and unrevealed; the moral dilemma of knowing something and what to do with that knowledge; how rare, fleeting and grand to meet another who 'gets' us; why differences or departure from the current norm creates fair game for predation; our ongoing struggle with relationships to other 'intelligent' life; the wisdom and /or folly of doing things by the numbers, come to mind.

Other movie on our list is Selma. Can't believe that it is not yet showing locally.
Would love to see it with the matriarchs, patriarchs and decendants of the movement . I hope it is a vehicle for carrying us all forward in the struggle.

We had JR over last night, after I made him breakfast, and he helped Holly and I undress the Christmas tree. We went to see a matinee of, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies". It was grand and worth seeing on the big screen. Then on to the Macaroni Grill for a late lunch, where table paper themes included dragons, warriors, and a beagle; a bear headed eagle. On the way home we picked up 2 of the Grandpuppies (DD Jens', Plott hounds) to watch for the weekend. When we arrived home DS Jamie was here to take JR home and it was nap time for Holly and I. LOL

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

YAY for nap time. Sounds like a great time.

We had Miss Maggie last night. She just got up. We watched Annue. The one with Carol Burnett. Funny. Better get busy!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Sounds like fun! what wonderful grandkids. I like that Annie version,-- well its the only one I know.
This is a day for movies.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Speaking of wonderful Grandies and movies, a favorite of mine is "My Neighbor Totoro" a Japanese animation film. So different from our usual fare. I bet Miss Maggie and JR would like this one and all us adults, too!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

We'll check that out/
A sweet, quirky one for adults (and older grandies?) is Lars and the Real Girl. Ryan Gosling plays some creepy roles in other movies, but in this one he is sweet and innocent.
And Little Miss Sunshine! another quirky sweet so funny family movie- not for young ones though

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

We love Totoro!!!!

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Malki and I are on our way to see "Gods and Kings, the Exodus". Hope we're not as dissapointed as when we saw "Noah". That movie was a waste of money. I don't expect it to measure up to the "Ten Commandments" but I hope it will be good atleast.

Last week we saw the new Hobbit movie. I think I like the "Lord of the Ring" series better. I got the feeling that Peter Jackson just wanted to get it over and done if you know what I mean. The dragon slaying sequence was pretty good I must admit, especially the death sceen.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Dh has been asking to see Exodus which surprised m a little, I think he read a good review. I'd like to know what you think, Yehudith.
The Hobbit preview seemed to be full of action and big scenes, while my memory of the Hobbit book was much more focused on little Bilbo. I might have gotten LOTR #1 mixed up with Hobbit.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We liked the Hobbit movies. But I will say that there were 3 Lord of the Rings books and they made 3 movies. There was only 1 Hobbit book and they turned that into 3 movies. I think they kind of stretched out the scenes.

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

It was very much focused on Bilbo. I tried to read the books years ago but just couldn't get into it. I think I just don't like Tolken's style of writing. That's kind of like Dickens. I don't like Dickens but I love his stories. Now Trollop! My l-rd I could read him everyday. I don't think he was as popular in America as he was in England, but he is so good, especially Barchester Chronicles. I have a BBC DVD of it and its as good as the books! You have got to see it/read it.

Yehudith

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, The book The Hobbit is all about Bilbo and his adventure. He is the main character and everything revolves around him. The Lord of the Rings trilogy spreads out more with more main characters and the Hobbits journey to destroy the ring is only one of the story lines.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

A suggestion for granddaughters (not sure about grandsons): When my daughters were young, they really liked watching "The Secret Garden". This was one of the few movies I didn't mind watching over and over.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Very gray and sorry weather weekend. We (spouse and I) reclined and watched two DVR movies I had recorded some time ago.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Saving Mr. Banks were quite entertaining, and great partners with chocolate delicacies.

Who knew anyone could cry over Mary Poppins...

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

We saw 'If I Stay' and 'When the Game Stands Tall'. Both were very good but I liked the second one a little better.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

{[( Downton Abbey )]}

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Finally watched Maleficent. It was entertaining.
Muddy the Secret Garden has always been a fav of mine.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I was busy doing a garden plan for a friend last night so I'm going to have to catch the season opener of Downton Abbey on demand. I'm excited it's a new season.

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Just got back from "...Exodus". CGI was great. Followed the story line if not the Torah line real close. My daughter and I agreed we could live with the few minor deviations and the artistic license that was taken, it was after all a movie. Yeah so what if Rameses looked and sounded like a hit man from the Russian mob complete with blue eyes. Face it you'd have to go really far to top Yul Brenner for the role.

The important part of the movie to me was that the people were people not gods come to earth as so many interpretations would have us believe. Moses my have followed G-ds orders but he didn't necessarily agree with them. Moses wasn't the one who set us free, it was by G-d's hand and desire. This was evident in the movie and I think was the take home.

So, all in all it was a good movie with great costuming, great visuals, great story and thank G-d no sex, nudity, or anything else squirmmy that ruins most movies now a days.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Lots of good movie ideas here, I don't want to pick anyone out, I get trailers anytime I google anyway. Thanks!
Downton Abbey is crazy popular! I've never seen one.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

You should totally watch Downton. My wife and I watched all season 1 and 2 right before season 3 started and we've been watching it ever since.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Downton Abbey is really good. I have the new episode recorded just haven't watched it yet. I will say that I pretty much have the TV running day and night this time of year. I tape anything that looks slightly good and Netflix movies come an go as fast as I can see them. I have found that if I listen to music instead of the shows which I don't always pay complete attention to that I get a whole lot more done. Our Dish package has a lot of music selections to chose from.

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Downton Abbey is great!! My daughter is totally addicted. She sits downstairs with her grandmother in her apartment and they watch it together. Atleast I know where she is and know she has good supervision.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yehudith, I'd been meaning to ask how your MIL was settling in.. I'm sure she loved the garden patio retreat you created for her! Good that she & your DD are finding ways to spend time together regularly. :-)
