Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Oh how I envy your warm weather, Mittsy! It is 43* and raining here. Temps are dropping to 18* tonight.

Litchfield, NH(Zone 5b)

Valal,

WHATEVER makes you think I'm experiencing gardening withdrawl??? New England is a LOVELY place to live in January - If you're a polar bear! I don't know how you all out there in the mid-west do it - I can't stand this weather (and I'm a native, so you'd think I'd be used to it). You never do know what you'll get in NE though, unlike the mid-west which is pretty much a polar ice cap all winter - NE is psycho - 60 and raining one day, and 25, sunny and the wind blowing a gale the next. I think in my next life I'm going to be a Hawaii native - so I can garden all year!

J

JenDion, I have lived in New England for 20 years and know what you are talking about. Once the snow hit it stayed all winter turning black until the next storm. One year it snowed 3ft deep. My 4 kids loved it, I didn't.

Here in the mid-west, it isn;t that bad. May take a few days but the snow will melt long before Spring. To be honest, I couldn't live where it is mild during the winter. I would garden myself to death. I need the break that winter provides. I spent 2 years in northern Arizona while attending college. Winter was nice, summers were terribly hot. Often above 100F. Too hot to do anything outside.

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Hawaii sounds good...except for the volcanoes and hurricanes, and occasional typhoons ,lol. Even paradise has it's drawbacks I suppose. Still I would like to give it a shot. Anyplace that it is not 0* would do, really. Our weather has been like a roller coaster ride. Saturday it was 60* and at this moment it is 20*. How crazy is that?

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Well, it's been in the 60's here, 70's later this week. We got some rain so now my back is killing me from the hula hoe. Having nice weather year round does have it's draw backs, namely year round weeds.

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

There you go, I forgot about the weeds! lol Oh well...

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Gm I Just got an dmail with conf # for the seed robin I didn't sign up for it i sent my seeds to dee to add to the robin , so i guess the robin is due to land here on the 7th . I'm not sure how it happened but I will be happy to go through it been long time & I will get my seeds out today & see if i have anything more to share .

Jen,

I'm a Native New Englander as well....Winters these past few years have been kind of crazy with warm days mixed in with the deep freeze. Jan and Feb cant go fast enough for me, as long as I can get my winter sowing done :) (first year)!

I'M going thru winter garden withdrawls and can't wait for SPRING! (I KNOW I'm far from the only one!)

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

I've been germinating and well I have these seedlings labeled "Yellow Bee Balm". Anyone know what these are, could they be Monarda lindheimeri? Bee Balm doesn't come in yellow as far as I can see. At any rate they germinated well, LOL, would be nice to know how tall they will be though.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Dee Let me know if you find out for i also took a few to try .

Thank you to Dee & Kath for the seeds you shared with me

going over to send Judy the Conf#

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

Susie it is pretty cold here too. :( Glad you got oit before the snow hit. We don't have snow right now, but it is as you said, colder than a witch's **t ( I have always heard it phrased a bit differently lol) But the intent is the same. ;)

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

According to the schedule, the Robin should land at my door somewhere very close to my birthday and will be a fitting gift to sift through at a very appropriate time :-)

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Fun to read everybody's weather accounts.

Jen - Susie used to have a door prize for whomever guessed the correct date for the bird to come back to her. You just blew the secret formula and gave it up for the world to see! We can never give a door prize again, ever. I think Sue (Cheer Mom) was the last to get a door prize and it arrived late. Heh.

Um, Susie - I asked Betsy to insert your name a while back because I thought you were expecting it. I'm sorry - hope that is not an inconvenience. Confusion!

Everybody - thanks for carrying on - I've been under the weather as everybody in this part of the world seems to have the "crud" this month. I had some form of crud beginning Sunday and just starting to catch my wind.

Please stay warm and dry - the sun is beautiful but as damned Yankees know how to dress for it - you can still get frostbite if your skin is exposed! :/

Amanda, lots of germs going around lately...hope you are feeling a lot better soon!

Litchfield, NH(Zone 5b)

WHO you callin' 'Damned Yankees' ??

;-)

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Not a Problem amanda Was just surprised when I got the conf# it was on the way I Enjoyed going through it ;

I Have to say It is a Very CLEAN & Enjoyable Robin Thank you All for Keeping it clean & So Much easier to go through .
I tried for many years to share Organised Robins But many times when I got it back it would be a mess with open baggies seeds all over . you all are doing such a good Job about share seeds much better ,
Thank you amanda taken over for me .well time to go feed & water have a great eve .

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Susie - it was organized because I had it before you and went through it bag at a time cleaning up and trying to get things back in order. I enjoyed doing it, so I'm not complaining. I'd be shocked if it ever came to me that way too. I'm not as busy as some of the participants and I have the time to do it.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Dee you sure did a nice job thank you for taken the time .
I can imagine the mess you had , & There is No Reason at all that the players cannot take the time to pull out one pk at a time
take what they want & Lay them back into the bags they came out of Neatly. anyway ty Sure hope it arrives back home like that also :) Happy gardening

Pittsburgh, PA

I mailman just delivered the robin and I will be returning it to the post office on Monday, off to Jennifer in NH ,unless we get some freak snow or ice storm!!!!

Judy

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Well, I know we all do our best to be "organized", but the seed hoarding frenzy that overcomes each of us is often overpowering.

There were quite a few baggies when the stash left me, and as we go along perhaps we'll find a better way to stay organized. Thanks Dee, for helping to keep us honest.

Susie - it's been my pleasure to try to follow in your deep, snowshoe prints. :D

Feeling some better. Going to try to take it easy overnight/tomorrow.

Rest well, all.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm sorry if i sounded hard sure don't mean to just seen that everyone has a 3 day -4 day s with the robin that some care can be taken to pack the seeds back in their baggies & each baggie is sealed tight.

anyway I did enjoy going through & I took out a few seeds out of a few packs that I hope will grow for me . ty for the mistake it was fun :).

happy gardening everyone .

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Are there any empty envelopes of any type still in the Robin? I still have seeds that are primarily packaged in homemade envelopes, and then I have loose seed. If not, I will try to order clear seed envelopes if I have to.

Thanks

Mount Sterling, KY(Zone 6b)

I get my clear zip lock baggies in the craft/ bead dept at Walmart, but most craft stores have them in asst sizes. The small ones are about $1.00 pkg.
I like the glassine envelopes(the kind stamp collectors use) for the teeny-tiny seed but those are hard to find in these parts and are much more expensive.

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

I will run to Walmart tomorrow seeing as how I am next in line for the Robin. Thanks.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

There should be plenty of the 1"x 2" little ziploc baggies in there. I use paper, thin paper like tracing paper works best, to wrap up super small seeds prior to putting them in the ziploc. The glassine envelopes would work great, if I ever run into them I'll definately pick some up.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

yes there was lots of baggies in the robin so don't make the extra trip stay in stay warm .

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I put several packets of empty plastic seed packets in for all to share and use - I remember my first robin - I had no idea what to do or what to put seeds into! :)

Susie - I don't think anyone here is offended. There is a lot of seed there - it's hard to organize, but when everybody puts in their own baggies . . . that's why I think a strict labeling system would be easier - everyone could put their collection in the box without regard to who donated the seed.

I think one year year you started a robin that way - perennials, vegetables, trees/shrubs, vines, etc.

I think THAT would be a lot easier. But between the here and then . . . ... We persist!

Cold here - I cannot warm up. If I thought I could afford to heat this giant money trap of a house I would crank it up!!!

Hope everyone's managing.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

That would be an interesting way to organize it. I mean our names are on most of the seed packets anyway.

Pittsburgh, PA

I sent the robin out today, should get to Jen by Wednesday.

Judy

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

Awesome. Thanks for including the little bags, I am sure I will make use of some of them. Thanks again, and like many folks, I am trying to stay warm, brrrr. Can't wait to see the Robin after Jen has her turn.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

it is easier for each player to put in their own Baggie with their name on the outside that way if anyone had question they could ask that person.

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

It sounds to me that the problem seems to be that people are too generous. I added more seeds and sticky back labels for participants to write info on. I had no problem taking a tiny bit of seed from a baggie and labeling it myself. I also consolidated a lot of my donations to take up less room.
AND to the wonderful person or persons who put in the peas, I thank you so very, very much! They are doing just wonderful. This is my first try at growing everglades (wild) tomatoes. I readily admit I DON'T KNOW WHAT I am doing, but I had to prune them back as we have a strick (NO GROW) rule that states my plants must be contained within my walls. I am always getting reminders about my banana trees being too tall.

Litchfield, NH(Zone 5b)

Got the robin yesterday, and have it ready to go back out today. Of course I packed and sealed it before making note of Timmy Jo's address- Amanda or TJ could you Dmail that to me?

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

I will d-mail you, Jen.

Ellendale, DE(Zone 7a)

I will probably need more than one day with the Robin what with college kids at home (still) over winter break, but I intend to stick to the rules and will try not to take too long with it. Thanks.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Ah - Mittsy!!!

If ONLY people were too generous in general. Ha.

Well, the bird is making her rounds, seems to be spring (!) here in NC and a very welcome sunny day at that.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day and a peaceful weekend. ;)

The Robin arrived on my doorstep today. What a beauty! I have not opened her yet, though. I woke up with massive dizzy spells, not sure what's going on. Your thoughts and prayers are surely appreciated. I want to enjoy my first seed swap.

Elk Horn, KY

feel better soon, timmijo!

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I hope that you'll be able to enjoy going through the many different seeds. I sure did!
