CLOSED: Indian meal moth infestation before moving to a new house

San Diego, CA

Hi all, cool forum you have here! Check this out:

At the home I was living in, I would find a moth or two every single day in my room. At first I thought there was a hole in a window screen, but I closed the window and even covered the bottom of my door and they would still be there. I kind of just killed the moths when I saw them, but when I saw a 2 caterpillars crawling around, it really scared me and made me look for the problem.

After some googling, I found out that they may be Indian meal moths, so I scoured my room for any food. Lo and behold, there were some old girl scout cookies in one of my drawers and it was completely infested with bugs and eggs! I threw out the food and cleaned everything I could find.

Even though I got the rid of the food source, I would still find bugs here and there. I decided to buy some pheromone traps and I caught about 10 in a week, but not much after that. This was right before I moved to my new place.

At my new place I thought it was all fine and dandy, but I started finding bugs on some of my clothes! See pictures 1-3. Some would have bugs on them, some would just be webs (that I assume housed a caterpillar until it grew). I put up 3 of those pheromone traps I had and so far after 4 days, I only found 1 bug and it was a baby one (see pic 4).

My questions are:

1) Are these indeed Indian meal moths and not something worse?
2) How can I ensure they don't proliferate in my new place? I plan to go through all of my clothes and manually clean off any bugs or webs that still exist. Is this enough?
3) Are there any other methods I can use to ensure they all die?

Are these moths tiny? Because they look like clothes moths.

They may be clothes moths, but I am not sure. Googling images makes them look like Indian meal moths and that would make sense since I found those cookies, but who knows. Should I just remove them from all my clothes and call it a day?

Looks more like an Indianmeal moth infestation than clothes moths to me. Clothes moths don't have a bi-colored wing pattern, and they characteristically have a prominent tuft of scales at the front of their head. Your first step should be to keep all infestable food products (including dry pet food) in sealable plastic, glass or metal containers. See http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/stored/indianmeal_moth.htm for more detailed suggestions.

Thanks for the insights Flapdoodle. Do you think I can just kill all of the caterpillars on my clothes and be fine? The traps have caught no more bugs and I don't have any food in my room anymore.

That should do it, but just to be sure, you might set out a pheromone trap again in a few weeks, and also acquaint yourself with what case-bearing clothes moth larvae look like...

Great, thanks a lot for your advice Flapdoodle. Will do. Also, I haven't seen any clothes moths like that so we are in good shape about that. The existing pheromone traps haven't caught any new bugs so we are good :).
