Known site issues

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

As of today (October 9), we know that the following areas are not working properly:

1. Links in the forums (the VigLinks has been removed as soon as we reported it to the techs, but they are still working to get our links working properly.)

2. Quote boxes in the forums - another to-do they are working on.

3. GWD has issues with browsing by category. We're working on this with the techs.

4. Journals have several issues, and I'm working to summarize and provide links in a bug report for the techs. Thanks to SallieKr and others who have so thoroughly documented the problems.

5. PlantFiles browse-by-family and browse-by-genus are not navigating properly.

6. Tradelists are also having navigation issues with their browse function.

These issues are all on our proverbial radar screen. As soon as we have a date for fixes, we will advise you here.

If there are other technical issues, please let us know.

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks Terry. My main issues have been with my journal, but the major problems have been resolved... thanks to you, Melody and the techs for the quick response! I've noticed one or two other issues, but they're relatively minor. I'm waiting until the major issues are resolved before reporting them :-)

Concord, NC

TheMKSM has problems with VSWAD and ADUNIT looking unsightly on IRIS Page.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks - and yes, we have made the techs aware of that.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I am still mostly not able to link or have access certain response boxes. The response box issue seems to be related to older threads or threads that have been continued. If posters are able to access the response box, and thereby open discussion or debate on older threads, I have no way to respond to questions or comments other than to privately DM the poster and say, "Sorry, I was not able to answer your question or comment because there is currently no reply option available".

I still don't understand why my photos are chronically out of order according to the way they were loaded. It doesn't seem to be a jpeg ordering issue (as in the site will only accept the pictures according to their jpeg number). It seems random. I have tried loading one at a time x five, loading common groups of two or three or loading the whole batch the way I'd like to see it. No matter what, they appear randomly skewed. Difficult to describe what is going on in a pictorial when the pictures are out of order and that I am technology challenged does not help. However, I'm surrounded by technology whizzes who are also baffled,

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Laurel, if you cannot see a link to post a response, it's because the thread has been closed to new replies. That would mean that no one else can post to it either. So if you are seeing threads that you cannot post to, but others are continuing to post, please send me a link to one of them and I'll take a look at it.

The reason for your photos being out of order is an oddity, and I haven't been able to replicate it. If someone else experiences this as well, please let us know. If you're trying to show something step by step, you can alway limit your post to one photo per post.

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

My photos are almost always out of order, as well. I Ctrl-click each one in the order they should upload and display, but they're out of order when I preview and post the message.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Are they loading in chronological order? I just used the test forum and tried loading images out-of-date-order, and they showed up in the exact order I loaded them. What can you tell me about the images - are some larger than others?

And are you allowing each image to load before adding the next one?

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

Maybe this is confusing:
"You may upload up to 5 images. Press CTRL to select more than one image file."
I assumed that meant they all had to be selected at once, so I was Ctrl-clicking in the file selection window. I'm not sure why the wording "Press CTRL..." is included? I had no problem selecting a single image at a time, then selecting "Choose a File" to select the next 2 separately.

I'm new to posting in forums this year, so I'm still learning ;-) The 3 here appear in the correct order.

Okay, I think that's the source of the confusion.

You can select all your images at once, using the CTRL key. However, when you do that, it is going to upload them in chronological/name order. I think most up upload processes do that (if you send pics to someplace like Walgreens for printing or sharing, it does the same thing.)

However, if you care about the exact order of your images, then you should load them one at a time - pick one, choose it, click the "choose a file" button again, and choose another one, etc.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I have tried to upload pics both ways. One at a time is better but not consistent. The last photo post on What's for Dinner is out of order (beans, apple dish and then soup made with beans) and was loaded one at a time. I loaded it so the soup would come after the beans and then the apple dish. Sometimes the ordering is changed in the preview but more often than not the preview looks fine and then the upload is shuffled.

I tried going to an example where there is no response box and have a new problem. No matter what page I click on for old posts, only the first page shows up. Page numbers are blue, black and red. The post I was searching was from an old thread and the conversation was about pork butts/shoulders. Maccionoadha has been able to post but I can not. I DM'd her to that effect. More recently, I had no response box on the last What's For Dinner Thread.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Laurel, I sent you a message - I think your problems are not related to any site bugs but hopefully we can sort through them.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Terry. I'll look at some of your suggestions after the holidays.

Getting ads and Popups all over the site today

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

No ads or popups here. Except for links not working all is OK.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The fix for the links should be rolling out later today. I don't have an exact ETA yet.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

a HUGE thank you in advance, terry. i hope this issue will finally be fixed once and for all.

ps. no pop ups or ads here.
@paulgrow-try re-booting your computer and also check your preferences after that.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The techs ran into a snag when they tried to roll out the link fix the first time, so if you saw some weirdness, that was it :-)

They have found the problem, and will try again - probably in the a.m. - to roll it out again.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The links have been fixed and are once again clickable :-)

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the diligence, Terry. Accessibility is so important.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

With respect to the issue of multiple photo uploads not showing up in the order expected, I have also noticed this. It appears to me that photo size is the determining factor. If you choose 2 or more photos for upload, they will all begin uploading at roughly the same time according to the % uploaded information. The order in which they ultimately appear on the page seems to coincide with the order in which the individual uploads complete, with the smaller and thus faster loading pics being placed ahead of those that are larger and therefore slower to load.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

I think there is also a problem with the bar graph display on the Voting Booth results page. It's showing html codes instead of the usual red lines. Maybe this is related to the earlier problems noted with html codes. Just wanted to call it to your attention.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I've reported the bar graph issue to the tech...they should be on it first thing Monday a.m.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

take a break, terry.......:-)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I did - I hit a hot yoga class this afternoon, and ate out with my husband tonight :-)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks to the techs for getting the links working again!

I have another problem now BLANK edit screen. With my plant list, as I make a trade, I go back to edit and change the quantity or add a line as who I promised it to. But as I do that now, I hit edit and instead of the duplicate post in a new box to allow editing, it is blank but still says "your message" with preview and send buttons.
This post was edited fine. Seems it is selective problem.

Sheila, are there any apostrophes (') or quote (") marks in that particular trade item description? We're still (still - argh!) dealing with some random mischief in those stray pesky punctuation marks.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

What we have been able to do in the past is to get a list going and then, wherever it is in the thread, we link to it in the first post. You can see my link in the first post.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1375718/

I click it then the "in reply to......" which would bring up my list. I then click the edit on the left and expect to see a copy to edit. Instead I see a blank screen.
btw
This is something we have been able to do on the RU threads for the last 7 years. I did go in and edit my back up list to take out " and ' but left in those in pot size (ie 4" ). It still wouldn't work.

Ah, okay - so it's a post in a thread? That sounds like an apostrophe error. I will let them know but in the meantime, if you try to edit a post and it's blank, hit your browser's back arrow to exit without saving. Copy the information in the post when you go back to where can see it, then edit it again, and this time paste it in, make your modifications, and save.

Hi Terry, So I went to Iris Pages without being logged in, and their are No Adds where the ''ADUNIT' and 'VSWAD' language or coding or whatever it is IS. IF their are no adds there even when not logged in, what is this their for? I would be curious to here anyone elses opinions too even non admins as to what the heck this is and how to resolve it.

themikesmom, the techs have it on their to-do's. I'm guessing it is some sort of placeholder for ads on that page (but not necessarily where you or I see it appearing at the moment. And there is nothing you or I or any other member can do to fix it. I'm sorry it is an annoyance, but they are aware of it and will get it removed as soon as they can.

Concord, NC

it is also on plantfiles main page halfway down on the righthand side, and the fact that you, and admins and I and other members cant fix it, doesnt mean that other members couldnt be helpful..ssgardener and coleup and countless others including myself have tried to be helpful in finding some of the problems on here to report and help get the kinks out of the site..does that mean that we shouldnt try to discuss and find solutions to some of the problems that could be looked into or passed along by admin to the tech team that they might not be aware of or that someone else might have a better easier solution to? nice to know how valued us members are..guess the fact that we cant start threads on here to address new problems bound to pop up says it all.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I think I mentioned it to you before, but it bears repeating - thank you for reporting this problem. I immediately passed that information along to the techs. As soon as I know when we will see an update/fix roll out, I'll let everyone know.

Quotes were looking normal for awhile, but the formatting is messed up again. Test.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I haven't seen them looking normal in quite a while...was it over the weekend?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

The quote box seemed to be fixed right when the weblinks were fixed. I can't remember for how long, though. Maybe 2 days? Then they were back to being broken again.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Just thought I'd mention that the photo contest ended 2 days ago and the heading at the top of the Home Page has yet to reflect this fact and that results can be viewed.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I took it down last night - my apologies. I meant to take it down first thing Saturday morning, and we were out of pocket most of the weekend and it slipped my mind. Congratulations to the winners - once again, our photographers have really outdone themselves!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Terry, it is nice that you took down the outdated promo for people to vote in the photo contest, but it would be nice if something announcing the end of the contest and linking to the results was installed in its place.
