END OF SEASON FLOWERS!!!! SEPTEMBER 2014

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Awwwww! Major congratulations! Gosh, she looks so much like her dad... and what a smile! There's just nothing like holding your little one for the first time... *happy sigh*

I've got a volunteer begonia blooming in the gravel pad I'm using as a holding area for too many potted plants. It's so cute!! :-) I'm never sure what to call that corner... is it a gravel patio? a nursery corner? a rain garden? I need a shorter name than "that area by the willow where we dumped a load of river gravel because it used to be so muddy." LOL

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Congratulations, Happy! Wow! That baby looks 10 minutes old :o)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

What an exciting day for your family. Welcome to the newest member!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Happy, what a happy happy day! How about some details? Is that your son's child? Boy, girl, name???

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Beautiful Mom--and beautiful baby. Minutes old--i suppose....
Is that your daughter? D-i-Law?

Best to them both...forever.. Gita♥

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I don't know any of those answers, but I do know Devon & Daryll were on their way to the airport early this morning, so soon they'll be giving that baby a personal welcome!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

We drove 10 hours to meet the baby -- long drive but we were really excited which made it easier! The mother is my husband's daughter (my step-daughter whose been "mine" since she was five), and the baby (a healthy boy) is our first grandchild....

We got back late last night....

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Am I the only person with a haze of Boneset in bloom? I wish it weren't so invasive, because it is beautiful.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I have one small clump by the driveway. Never knew what it was until I googled the plant name you just posted. The flowers are lovely.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

They are -- but DEADHEAD them! Or you will soon have a lot. It might have traveled with a plant I gave you.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Ok, thanks. I will do it. As a matter of fact, a lot of plants need deadheading now so that they don't take over the entire neighborhood.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

So true! I have been trying to keep up with mine. I have saved the neighborhood from invasions of Milkweed and Mistflower, and am doing a so-so job of catching the New England Aster and Large Leaf Aster seeds before they float away.

Happy, congratulations to all of you!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Muddy, you mentioned Eurybia macrophylla on another thread. I googled the name and found photos of this plant. I think it is what I have in the back of the property. There is an ocean of them. They first occurred several years ago, and took over the place gradually. I tried to pull them out early this year, but that effort was probably not very effective because they are also in the woods, and everywhere else. Not sure where they came from originally.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Still blooming:

1. Rose of Sharon from Judy
2. Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender'
3. Abutilon 'Fairy Coral Red'
4. Egg Plant 'Easter Egg' and Browallia speciosa
5. Brug 'Dr Seuss' in full bloom

Aster Lady in Black. This is a full sun plant! The ones in partial shade don't look so good.

lovely! A couple of my Tradescantias are reblooming

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Donner, that's a nice selection of perennials!
I can see why you don't want a sea of Eurybia macrophylla, but if you have to have an invasive plant, you could worse...at least it's native.

My neighbors probably wouldn't mind an invasion of plants, if they even noticed that is. One of them doesn't care what grows in his yard, and he has several escapees from my yard already, so I think I might toss some seedheads from native plants over the fence.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

The Beautiberry is very pretty, SSG. Do the berries last over the winter, or do birds eat them?

Muddy, if you keep tossing seedheads over the fence, your neighbors will eventually have a wild flower garden :o).

Sally, my Tradescantia 'Sweet kate' also bloomed again a couple of weeks ago. I didn't do a good job cutting them down after they bloomed in the spring. So I got only about half a doze flowers this time. The Geum ‘Mrs J. Bradshaw’ also produced a few flowers.

David, do you remember telling me about a goldenrod with blooms all up the stem? I think I have one, you may have gifted me a seedling. It's super cute.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Sally, perhaps you have Solidago caesia, Blue-stemmed Goldenrod, photo below. Another interesting Solidago we have growing in our yard is Solidago bicolor, a rather novel, white-blooming goldenrod.

thanks David

Donner, the berries on my beautyberry lasted until late winter. Btw, your brug's still blooming!? Mine stopped blooming quite awhile ago.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

SSG, my brugs are still blooming. Yours is probably just taking a break. If you give it water and fertilizer, there should be another flush of blooms in October.

There are 2 brugs in the photo below. 'Dr Seuss' (probably what you have) was still blooming, but the 'Xena' in the back was pretty much done for the year. I took the photo right before I had to cut the plants back to just a few sticks because there was a huge wind in the forcast. That was quite late of the season, probably mid or late October.

The beautiberry is so pretty. If the berries add color to the winter landscape, that's even better! You can plant a gold leaf Euonymus behind it as a backdrop for the purple berries.

I have a noid pink one, so mine might be done for the season. I need to be better about fertilizing next year, and maybe try a bigger pot. Although your Dr Seuss seems to be in a pretty small pot for its size!

My beautyberry is against a white fence, which helps the purple berries pop. It leafs out *very* late, so I'm thinking about planting some columbines underneath it.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

SSG, the pot you see in the picture is probably about 20" in diameter. Keeping up with watering brugs is always challenging. Brug roots fill up the pot quickly no matter how big the pot is :o(.

You may also consider VA Bluebells or Bleeding Hearts in front of the Beautyberry. They both go dormant (VA Bluebells sooner than Bleeding Hearts) so that you will have a full view of the lovely berries.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--is your pink Brug from me?

It has never been a good bloomer--and I also did not like it's growth style--
tall and lanky. I no longer grow it because of all that.

If you want to be"blown away"--get a Dr. Seuss--Amazing bloomer and the most fragrant.
Growth habit? Think of a huge beach umbrella. Flat-topped and sprawling.

Donner or me should have some rooted and growing cuttings available next spring.

The Dr. S.-=See the shape? This was Sept, of last year (2013). About 7' across.
I gave it away. Starting all over from a cutting from last year.

Yes Gita, the pink brug is from you. Hopefully there's a Dr Seuss cutting next spring!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, gorgeous brug!!! 'Dr Seuss' definitely has a very neat form. The 'Xena' I have is also very lanky :o(.

SSG, Gita and I and probably others will root 'Dr Seuss' cuttings this year. I am sure there will be one for you.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS...

I need to fertilize my Brugs more. I seldom do it--other than the time-release
fertilizer (Osmacote) mixed into the soil. They also like some Epsom salts
now and then as well as sea weed fertilizers. Which plant does not like that?

#1--Here's some pictures of the pink Brug from 2010 and 2009.. It did pretty good that year....
#2--On the 2nd picture, you can see how white the blooms start and them turn pink,
You asked about that before....
#3 is from 2009 --you can see the slight sprawling of stems here
#4--This shows it even more--the growth and blooms are so hap-hazard.
#5--close up of blooms. Note that it hardly has any "neck". (Calyx??)

Gita, the shape of the plant doesn't look too bad in the 3rd picture. The pink color is very pretty. The flowers of my 'Xena' are a shade paler as Sally commented earlier.

I wish I could visit a brug garden and see exactly what each one of them looks like in person.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

My pink Brug is over seven feet tall, has bloomed a lot and is resting now. Until finding how it liked the current spot, it was a PITA, worst of the three with spider mites. And it is lanky. Gee, am I allowed to get rid of it? I did not grow Datura this year but the scent of yellow Datura is the best.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, is the scent of yellow Datura strong enough to perfume a small area? I am growing white Datura this year, but cannot really smell anything unless I put my nose to the flowers.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have not grown either Datura--to any success--in a few years.
Don't have the space for them as I have expanded my garden "haves"
a bit. Need to find space for several as I speak...
The only bed they would do decent in is the long S. exposure side bed.

When i did have the yellow Datura--I never thought to stick my nose
close enough to smell it. I believe I have grown the triple purple/white Datura
more often than the yellow. There were years I tried to grow both--
but the yellow one did not germinate..or just faded away as a seedling.

Oh, well..... G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh yeah, donner. I had a yellow one by my downstairs window one year. The scent wafted right in the window, heavenly. That is a south facing location, my hot zone. I do find the seedlings kind of a pain. The purple one grew rangier than the yellow, in my limited experience.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I love fragrant flowers. I have a pot of Tuberose, a huge Night Blooming Jasmine, a huge Brug, and a white Datura in the backyard this year. The Brug is very fragrant when blooming. The Jasmine is just done with blooming. Its scent was delicious in the evening and the early morning.

I would love to try the yellow Datura next year if I can find seeds.

Does anybody know what to do to make Tuberose bloom more? I planted 2 pots of them, but got a total of 3 flower stalks :o(.

Sounds lovely, Sally. My stupid Jasmine is finally making buds. I have lots of yellow Datura seeds, I bet Gita does too. Sure you cannot fit a Clerodendron aka peanut butter shrub? That was a highlight of summer scent for me. The flowers, sweet, not the peanut butter smell LOL! I have tuberose in two places. The moist place, they bloomed, the sunnier drier place they have not. Tuberose need to come inside for winter, right?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

My yellow Datura seeds will be a bit old as I have not grown them for years.

I think you could mail some seeds to Donner--not me. Or--wait till the seed Swap.

I know they are viable for quite a long time.....But....???

G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have those two dwarfed yellow ones blooming, I'll save those pods so w have fresh. And THROW AWAY ALL THE OLD ONES.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Dwarf??? Why is it Dwarf???

Is it good to save seeds from something that is not "normal"?

I have buckets of seeds....all kinds....I know....I know......
Just hard for me to do it.

Maybe i should rent an airplane and throw all my seeds out the window.
What a colorful world it would be!

G. :o)
