Baby white oaks looking for a home...# please.
Weather Late Summer
Coleup, I sent you a Dmail.
Muddy, I'll keep that in mind- American holly, dogwood, redbud...are regular volunteers here
Thanks! I have a plan...I'll surround any "tasty" trees and shrubs with holly seedlings in the hope that the prickles will help protect the tender plants. I have at least 2 baby American Hollies that need to be relocated, but I'll need more.
I tried to use mint-scented plants to protect shrubs, but it didn't work. Deer have started to eat mint family plants, Forsythia and (yay!!) Euonymus alatus. These deer aren't even close to starving...they're just branching out.
Possibility of "conversational snow" in the MidAt this evening!

lol wonder if that's one that the eskimos have a word for among the eight types!
Have also noted a lot of Polar Vortex correcting this yearfrom what we called the ar ctic downreach weather patterns last year.
The term Polar vortex is being liberally scattered in the media, seems to me. I haven't paid any attention to what they are getting at though- winter bad or winter not so bad?
Sorry but I found today just delightful. The chill and clouds invigorated me and made me extra happy about having a cozy home to go to and holidays to look forward to!
I was gone all day long but Ric spent the day outside and got a lot done. He dug up all the canas and loaded them into the truck. I took the truck down to Josh's house this evening and we got them into his basement. We have a pretty good system I move them from the truck to the basement window and he takes them from the window to the back of the basement. Once they are in the in truck it's pretty easy from there.
its a whiteout!!! did you have bread and milk?? how did you make it to work, snowmobile?
;^)
some people around here were mentioning the forecast of snow at every chance.
Haha...it was snowing on my way home from work last night. I hoped it wouldn't stick to the roads because I haven't put my snow tires on yet. It was fine though. More of just a pretty site than anything. Last night there was some on the Sweetgum and Metasequoia and it looked real pretty but it must have melted off last night.
I had snow on the hood of the Tundra (see? even named the truck appropriately) on Thursday morning in West Memphis, AR.
Not so bad this morning in Abilene, except still being 30ºF and feels like 23...
Burr...
Rain and warm air coming in tonight. Make the most of tomorrow!
And don't look at Wednesday... but be sure you get your shopping done ASAP........and heaven help the travelers....
These weather fluctuations are crazy!
The storm coming in is bad news for Thanksgiving travelers, for sure.
Yeah very interesting storm coming on Wednesday. I have mixed emotions about it because on one hand, I LOVE snow, but on the other hand, I still have tons of bulbs to plant...it's a toss up. If it does snow up here, I hope that it melts super fast because Saturday and Sunday, it's bulb day!
Jeez, I don't even have my snow tires on the car yet. Sheesh!
It sure was beautiful today. Got some clean up done. Got a few more bulbs of my own to get in the ground. LOL
hey jeff, down here snow tires are a special order item only while up in vermont every one has an extra set of rims, one for snows and one for summer tires. since my newspaper delivery job requires being out there delivering no matter what conditions are I constantly consider and reconsider alternatives as the option of just staying home is off the table.
Sigh, really thought that this year delivering the biggest paper of the year early am TDay would not be a weather event....Sorry Sally, I peeked. Might put a bit of a hurting on those black Thurs and Friday sales.
gosh, hoping the Thursday paper delivery goes OK. It could just peter out by then.
My job is 30 minutes away and I like to be able to get places in the snow. I'm not the type to say I can't make it somewhere because of the snow. Snow tires are a huge improvement over regular all seasons. They are the next best thing to AWD although I might even get them if I had AWD. Hopefully your Tday newspaper run is liquid or dry all together.
two weather related happenings at my house:
1) Dial up connection is iffy due to wind and rain and Verizon pushing fiber optic and not maintaining copper wire anymore. So my connection 'disconnects' all by itself! May be off line for a while FYI.
2) Seems that over the years enough moisture has penetrated the basement wall where fuse box is mounted to corrode the main breaker bar so that screw in fuses no longer make good contact in one or two house circuits. Panel box needs to be replaced and a new location for it found. Cost a thousand dollars! The circuit that is out is overhead kitch lite, porch lite and wall outlets where I plug in my TV (Wayne has his own) . Would be good to rewire house pre replacement so new box could hook to new wires and have only one electrician bill for same.
So, I may have a media free week or so and quiet times to consider my options and finances.
Not sure how much DIY and 'making do with' I have in me at this time....
Judy, if the problem is in the panel box, there is no need to have work done on the dead circuit. The circuit can be checked with an inexpensive continuity tester where the hot lead is attached in the uncovered panel - one tester lead to the attachment post, the other to the box. If the tester does not light up then the problem is in the box, not the circuitry. BE CAREFUL!
Oh man, that's a bummer about your electrical box! Hopefully it won't be that much.
Edited to clarify: FIOS line went in our yard, of course (Note: Verizon didn't damage any plants : - ). )
Judy, Verizon put in a FIOS line in our yard for free because our old copper line needed to be repaired, and it was cheaper for them to put in a free FIOS line.
