D-mail issues

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Now, when I send a d-mail, I get an error message that I failed to choose a format for my photo when none was sent. In my d-mail afterwords, there is the message

"Click the image for an enlarged view."

Replies to my d-mail have the same message at the bottom when on image was attached.

Can you try again and be sure you're not accidentally clicking on the "browse" button? I just sent a test dmail message without any problems.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Just tried it again and erroneous message did not repeat. However, I had the erroneous message appear on three consecutive d-mails, and it also appeared at the bottom of replies I received from two of the senders. After the first one I was vigilant to be sure I was not clicking on "browse", and it is unlikely that responders made the same mis-click in their responses.

I get the exact same message and have just learned to ignore it.

If errors/bugs are not reported to Admin so that they can be addressed, then over time such problems accumulate and result in a progressively degraded site experience.

I always get that problem too in dmail, but that particular problem for me has been pretty harmless.
Something is afoot though. I don't know if DG hired a best selling author that said he or she could write code for the site or what but many things unfortunately aren't right as of about a week ago.
It seems alot of it has to do with the MySql database. I agree greenthumb but users like myself and probably 99% of DG members don't really know how to help or what exactly to report. They should have employees who are experts using the site and correcting what's wrong or relaying messages.
Something really is wrong when it happens to alot of people ALL the time. There might have been people before that have cried wolf occasionally but usually most people are just wanting their user experience fixed.

Quoting:
"They should have employees who are experts using the site and correcting what's wrong or relaying messages."

That is the role of Melody and me, and I promise you we have been working non-stop pretty much all day on these issues.

The problems we are experiencing are related to a recent site upgrade that ran afoul of some unusual coding in our very old forum structure. We pinpointed them back to single quote marks, which are harmless and should be available to use without any problems, but some of our old architecture tends to get wonky when it encounters them.

We spent time this afternoon tracking down where the problems were occurring, testing some things and they rolled out some changes in the last hour that will hopefully address the majority of those problems.

The error with dmail and photos is still outstanding, and I think it has something to do with inadvertently brushing against or rolling over the image upload button/link. We will be trying to sort it out ASAP.

Thanks Terry. Melody and you are doing a good job. I just wouldn't want to think some members were being taken lightly because I too know something has been wrong. I thought that might've been somewhat offensive to an employee, what I said, I wasn't trying to single anyone out with that.
That's funny that you mention the quote marks AND apostrophes. My "contact us" dmail that wouldn't go thru was suggesting that very thing! I personally don't think there is any operator error such as brushing against or rolling over the upload button/link. I can see how an old forum structure/program could be a problem.

Ironically, I still have that dmail that wouldn't go thru in the cache, here it is. -

"Is Davesgarden experiencing trouble technically? I've noticed some odd syntax that isn't usually there such as / when I write the quote marks for example and it says "Click the image for an enlarged view" when there is no photo uploaded in dmails. The other day many SQL error messages were coming up and for example I couldn't edit. Is it gonna stay this way?
Just curious,
Thanks, Will."

I sent that then and I got the error message in DreamOfSpring's thread. - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1370786/

Thanks for your attention in solving the issues, I know it can be frustrating.

I've programmed in PHP and MySQL in the past and, believe me, quotes and apostrophes kicked my butt a number of times. A single error in a critical piece of code used in many different areas of the site could explain the seemingly unrelated problems. For example, there might be a subroutine called by both the email text entry function and the forum submission/edit text entry function.

I've been too busy with other hobbies- gardening, photography, etc.- to do any programming for several years, but would love to get back to it someday. I have the utmost confidence that the DG programmers will iron out the kinks soon!

Every d-mail I receive now has the message "Click the image for an enlarged view." at the bottom. This has just occurred since the "upgrade" and I doubt that everyone who communicates with me suddenly began "inadvertently brushing against or rolling over the image upload button/link". And as long as it is already on this post, the message below appears whenever I copy and paste in DG. Not sure if the link is the same every time or if it varies. This has been occurring for a very long time, not part of the current batch of glitches.

We will continue working with the techs on the dmail issue.

The "read more" tynt links have been there for quite some time. The next time you copy something, you'll see a small popup with them - there's a small "x" if you want to disable it.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, I'll try that now. "The next time you copy something, you'll see a small popup with them - there's a small "x" if you want to disable it."

No small "x" that I can see.

The "Read More: ..." link also shows up when I copy/paste into a journal entry. I'd noticed a popup before, but thought it was a Windoze thing, so I ignored it. I really didn't want that link in my update, so I always had to delete it. After reading greenthumb99's post, I tried adding an entry and copy/paste just now. The popup with option to disable it is gone.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sallie, the popup is gone, or the option to disable is gone?

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

When I was copying and pasting from one entry into another yesterday, I remember seeing the popup. This morning I tried the same thing again as a test and clicked the "x". I tried another copy/paste and I still got the "read more" link and the popup, so I clicked "don't show me this again." I think that's why the popup is gone now. I'm sorry if my timing was confused. I thought I'd done that after posting the above, but maybe it was before. At any rate, the only thing clicking "x" did was close the popup window for that copy/paste operation. When I tried the same again it was back.

Here's a photo of what I just tried- "Read more..." link is there, but now I didn't get the popup.

You can opt out here: http://www.tynt.com/opt_out.php

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Terry! I'd never heard of Tynt before. I've bookmarked that page in case I need it again.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sally, there are other similar services besides that one, so the trick is to figure out which app is running, then Google for it - most of them are going to have a similar opt-out.

(Sallie) Cherry Vall, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks again... I tried the "opt out", then went to an entry and tried a copy/paste. No added "Read more..." link :-)
