FIRST FLOWERS OF SUMMER!! AUGUST Edition :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks G, put me down for one of those guys :)

Cat, lovely whites and that butterfly is pretty too. I really like that phlox. I got a white one from Aspen at the swap and it's blooming now and smells nice.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Seq. That is phlox David which has been a terrific bloomer for me.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I had ONE Phlox David and it was taller and a stronger bloomer
that the other two. I could, almost, say--massive.

Hopefully mine spreads a little. It's right up next to evening primrose so it would be nice if they naturalized together.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Phlox David and evening primrose sound like a pretty combo! My 'David' has spread a bit since last year--not aggressively so, just enough to make me happy. :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

SSG, as I recall, when I gave you the seedlings I mentioned that I didn't think they were hamburg parsley after all. ;-) well, all I can say is it has been one robust yellow celosia! :-D I love it,

Lavenders and blues for today:

Sounds good Cat, I'll look forward to it next year then :) I love that combo in the second pic, is that solidago blooming on the right?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

1. Two different shades of yellow on Knockout Rose.

2. Two different cultivars of Joe Pye. One from happy and one from donner. They actually look like completely different plants when they come up in the spring.

3 and 4. Mystery coneflower. About 8 ft tall. Definitely the tallest perennial in my garden.

5.
My sweet potato vine is blooming! :D what a cute little flower!

Nice flowers SSG, my poor KO barely can even bloom without the JBs being all over it. I didn't know sweet potato vine bloomed, but it looks very nice!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Not exactly flowers, but we have been impressed with the Birdhouse Gourd plant that is eating our deck area. First photo is from last month before gourds had grown to any size. Second and third photos were taken today of developing gourds. If you look carefully in the third photo you can see a tree frog on the post beside the lamp fixture, better seen in the last photo.

Wow, that's pretty neat GT and the frog looks cool too!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Seq--yes it's Solidago cutleri.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Of course!!! I KNEW that!!!...........just joshing with you, David....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Catmint, that tall coneflower might be Ech. paradoxa. I had a plant that was supposed to be that species... grew quite tall... then bloomed purple. Humph. Yours is lovely!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Critter! :-)

Greenthumb, love your Birdhouse Gourd! I'm afraid mine gave up the ghost after the big storm where I lost my really tall sunflower. :-( Well, interesting plant to try.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Seq! The yellow KO rose seems to be not as floriferous as the red ones. ALL of my roses are looking skeletal, thanks to the sawflies early in the season.

I fell in love with the sneezeweed I saw at Catmint's and picked one up for myself. Why do such pretty flowers have such strange names? I got mine at HD, and I was pleasantly surprised at how healthy it looked.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

ooh, what kind did you get, SSG? I agree--so pretty. Yeah, funny name, isn't it? :-D I usually try to call it Helenium, just for the dignity factor. ;-)

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

SSG we used to have a coneflower similar to your yellow mystery one that was Prairie Coneflower Ratibida Pinnata

Greenthumb - love the sounds of tree frogs - never saw one before though!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Wind, I think my mystery coneflower might be Rudbeckia laciniata. They look just like the pics you posted above that greenthumb identified. They have the same green head and pinnate leaves. I love how tall they get, but mine partially flopped over after the last rainstorm.

Catmint, I got Helenium Mariachi Salsa, and also Arizona Apricot blanket flower. Another funny name!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

We find them surprisingly often around the outside of the house, occasionally even on a window screen where the lights have been on in the evening, attracting insects.

Oh I love those frogs! Fantastic for pest control. :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

David, tell Pat I think I'm going to get my first Queen's Tears flower soon, looks like a flower spike developing in one of the cups- neatO!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

SSG - we have lots of toads too as well as some non-tree frogs that even hang out among the many pots on our patio as well as our little "pond".

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Looking forward to seeing photos, SSG!

Love the frogs and toads, Greenthumb. Hope I'll find some in my own yard some day.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I have never seen a blooming potato vine. Very interesting photo, SSG.

Lovely deck, David. I like the big vine - whatever it is :o).

Here are a few from my garden this week.

1. Happy bee on Caryopteris 'Blue Mist'
2. Jerusalem Cherry
3. Pepper 'Black Pearl;
4. Lily 'Deer Leftover' :o)
5. Chinese Aster

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

A few more:

1. Anemone - don't remember the variety
2. Day lily from Gita
3. Pepper 'Chili Pyramid'
4. Brug 'Dr Seuss' - cuttings originally from Gita
5. Taro 'Black Magic' - from Coleup 2 years ago. I kept a tiny baby over the winter last year. Now it is planted in the center of a very big pot surrounded by Begonias.

Donner--
So good to see you post! You are, like, the lost soul here....

Only the dark Sweet Potato Vines bloom. The green ones do not.

David's vine is a Gourd. He said so before posing it,

How are You????? Is your job still overwhelming you so much we never
see you here--or have you moved on to some other DG "home"?

I miss your posting.....and more pics of your lovely garden.

Will you be coming to Holly's swap?

Last night, I wanted to go outside and take a picture of my huge Mandevilla
by the light of the side door. It came out pretty dramatic....
It is doing so well this year. Must be the Osmacote I mix into every pot
as I plant anything.

Donner--That dark Taro is spectacular!

My Dr Seuss brug is growing really well--but there are NO blooms,
even though it has "Y"-ed more than once. Wonder what's up?

The Maya bloomed very nicely--it just has, once again, some kind of
leaf problems. They turn cruddy and yellow and I have to pull them off.
It looks like some kind of insect damage--but there is none to be seen at all.
But--it HAS TO be something--as the backs of the leaves are full of little spots.

I have sprayed with Insecticidal Soap and even with "Forbid"---but it keeps
on happening. The new leaves look OK--then, when they get bigger--they turn all yukky.
I think I had this same problem las year--but not to this extent.

The Dr. Seuss Brug sots just feet away from the Maya--and has absolutely NO issues.
just that it is NOT blooming.

1-and 2--Maya blooming

3--Affected leaves-

4--Maya leaf--top

5--Maya leaf--underside

Any wise opinions appreciated. Thanks, Gita

Gita, Lovely Mendevilla. It is such a great bloomer!

I have come online from time to time to take a quick look at the lovely photos from everybody. Miss you all. I am looking forward to seeing everybody at the swap. Need to get my act together and post my HAVEs.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Donner--we are cross-posting....;o)

1--Top of still green Maya leaf--showing how the damage starts.

2--damage on underside of a big leaf.

3--Dr. Seuss Brug--on same landing by shed. Doing great.

4--Top of Dr. Seuss...leaves are huge,

5--Cleome in kitchen-side bed

I wonder if the Maya leaves are simply dying off due to needing more fertilizer. The plant becomes so huge. Older leaves do die if there's not enough nitrogen, I believe.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

SSG our coneflowers flopped too after the rain

greenthumb, cute frogs. pic#3 looks like he's smiling :)

Hi Donner! pretty blooms. I love the Taro Black Magic too

I took a few pics this morning. I have a mystery white bloom on a vine that I thought was a weed and I keep pulling it out. Anyone know what it is? the stems have a hint of burgundy color. It is blooming in our beauty berry shrub

pic #4 is the mystery vine leaf

Sally--

This Maya is just a babe...a toddler--maybe 3 years old...

You saw the leaves just yesterday--that is NOT old age--and not lack of
fertilizer. Something is feeding on it--but seems to be invisible...Broad Mites?
I am hoping David will peek in here and give his opinion.

A couple things I could do--next spring...too late right now...

--Empty out the big outer pot and sterilize it, then put all fresh soil in it
before sinking the brug pot in there.

--Need to--also,somehow. remove ALL the soil from the roots of the Brug.
Kind of--give it all a fresh start.

Sally--here is this same plant a few years ago--Now--this is HUGE
and perfectly healthy!!!
I know you have seen these pictures before...

Spectacular Maya, Gita. I love the variegated leaves. I didn't take Sally's offer of a big Maya this spring. Instead, I took a cutting. The cutting didn't root :-(.

The brug leaves, hmmm, it doesn't quite look like damages from spider mites though. Maybe fungus? If you treat it, there is still time for new leaves and more flowers.

The 'Black Magic' only had 2 small leaves when I planted it this spring. I will see if it will produce babies this year that I can keep alive over the winter.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Wind, what is that plant in your 3rd picture? It looks like hummers will love it. I lost my hummingbird hyssop last winter :o(.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi Donner, it's Firecracker shrub, Hummingbird Bush, Hamelia patens. I have to overwinter it indoors every year. Hummers do love it!

Chicago Fig seems to be doing okay, but is just one single stem. Our fig tree that I thought died is actually doing great and came back in force as more like a shrub vs a single trunk tree

Joe Pye Weed is blooming now and much shorter this year

Lots of hummers today, especially at Salvia Guaranitica and Salvia Black and Blue

Plumbago is blooming now too. we have it in a porch pot and overwinter it indoors

Nice Chinese Aster Donner, it's very pretty!

I love that hummer in the salvia photo and the salvias are really pretty too. I'll have to get some for next year for sure; it's such a nice blue!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

We have a Datura, presumably from the spring swap, that bloomed early yesterday evening. I have no record of who gifted us with this beauty, and reviewing everyone's posts on "Haves and Wants" revealed nothing. Does anyone recall providing this, and if so, any details on the ID? Thanks.

Thumbnail by greenthumb99 Thumbnail by greenthumb99

David--

The white datura (aka Joe Pye Weed) is considered a weed...very toxic!!..
It will spread all over before you know it. It comes back bigger every year.
It has no redeeming qualities.

My neighbor asked me to come look at his "pretty flower" in front of his house.
He had no idea where it came from, but it had spread from one end of the house
to the other, and grown taller than his shrubs in one year-- He did not know what it was.

I told him it was a white datura and then went home and Googled it and printed out
2 pages of its history and "horror" stories of it's toxicity--dating back to the
middle ages and the American Indians that used it as medicine and lhallucinations.

Because my neighbor gas 2 young G-kids--he pulled it all up the next day.

I would suggest you not keep it....but, of course, you have acres and acres of woodlands.
Maybe it doesn't matter.....

Gita
