Suggestion: Email Notifications?

(Zone 5a)

I am wondering if you can make this available for the threads we start or even the ones we comment on... of course as opt-in as not all want the so-called clutter. Sometimes when I get on the computer, I'd like to just go through email rather than visit all the forums I belong to. Is this a possibility?

Thank you so much.

We adopted the "watched" forum and thread features because email notifications got really annoying :-)

(Zone 5a)

Thanks for replying, but I guess I never thought notifications were annoying if it was things I was interested in. Ah, well... :)

Well, let's say a thread is really active and gets slammed with 50 new posts in a day. Even if you're really interested in it, would you want to have 50 emails show up in your inbox in 24 hours?

(Zone 5a)

With personal emails and forums, I do not get what I consider an over-abundance. It is a treat to have a nice list of emails awaiting me in the morning. If the option were available, would it have to be all or none rather than pick or choose?

Based on my current usage at this site, I would want to receive notification for those things I am seeking information, like identifications, plant care. And for any comments on photos I upload to the files. But for the Daily Pic thread at the Bird Watching forum, I may or may not want that. And probably not the recent July: Hotter than a Firecracker thread on the Central Midwest Gardening. That is a bit more busy than threads I normally participate on.

I recently read the discussion about adding "likes" and other such things. I am glad you are not making these types of changes. I do appreciate this site's simplicity. If email notifications are not done, I am ok with that. I just thought to ask.

I appreciate your time.

Now I need to stop procrastinating and get to canning those beans.

I'm not sure it could be tailored to a thread-by-thread decision to get email vs. watched thread notifications, so it would probably be an all-or-nothing proposition. As it is, if you watch threads you're most interested in, any new activity is presented on your home page whenever you click on it.

Is Chillybean using the Watch Thread feature? It doesn't sound like it...

(Zone 5a)

Actually, I am. It is nice and I just discovered the Home page, Like yesterday when I posted about a green bean situation, I would rather have only to run to the email, instead of logging in to an additional site. I tend to get distracted that way. Haha.

Chillybean, you don't have to log in to check a site you are "watching". You
just click on the watched thread when it shows up.

The last thing I want in life is more e-mail! But that's me.

You may be dong this already, but you can stay logged in. Just close the window or tab out if you don't like to leave it open. I do understand about the email vs. site but I really think you would find the emails overwhelming.

I use Firefox and I "pin" the DG site so it's always sitting there ready to
be checked.
