FALL/WINTER Gardens 2014-15, Part 1

Springfield, OR(Zone 8a)

Thank you.

Yeah those metal tubs get scorching got here.. Neighbor uses similar "stock tanks" to water her cattle, but keeps them on the east side of buildings or else the water is HOT HOT!! One day I'll plant one with cannas, but they're a little expensive new, and hard to find used here in farmland where people actually use them for their intended purpose ;)

Linda's you could be the new Nancy Botwin, LOL!!

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

The stuff that you find on dog walks! Early this week someone had thrown aside some yellow straight neck squash on the side of the road that had become overly mature, a dark orange, and quite puffy looking. So i picked the least blemished and least rotten one i could, to collect seed from (they will be grown in a plastic kiddie pool next year, just to play it safe with my actual garden bed).

And then today we found what has to be some type of pink variety of cornflower. Just one lone plant randomly growing along the side of the road, with a few dried seed pods, so naturally i plucked a few off of the plant, lol.

I finally got my onion, beet, and carrot seeds ordered! I found most of the stuff to Reimers. All of these are going to be direct seeded in September or October. I really like the Ishikura Onion green onions. I grew them a few years ago & tried saving the seeds, but very few of them germinated. I'm also going to try a red green onion, Crimson Forest Bunching Onions, just for a change of pace.

DH is very limited on how much broccoli & cauliflower he can eat due to being on blood thinners, so I'll just purchase a few of those. Actually.I'm trading for those plants with another vendor. Transplants for jellies!! I'll also have a bed of all types of mixed greens for the chickens.

And one of my customers gave me some Carolina Reaper pepper transplants today. These are supposed to be the newest record holder for the hottest pepper, but totally the wrong time of year to get them started. I think I'll plant them in earthboxes & try to keep then in my hoop house over winter.

Sounds fun Jo, and keep is posted on those peppers!

Jmc good job on the seed snatching! That's one of my favorite things to do :))

Jo-Ann,
Thanks for the progress updates!

I'm "following" you this season, LOL! Hope that's ok.

I just need to tag along for a minute, cause my planting schedule is still way off for the spring-summer garden --other than tomatoes and A pepper, I'm clueless.

Girlie, you just taught me I have NINE potential greenhouses available! To date, I've only used my EBs for the onions and greens (mustards & collards) during the winter season. Now that I finally have enough perforated greenhouse plastic sheeting to cover all the RBs, I can cover the boxes, too!

Just need to decide what will give me the best crop from the boxes...

Thanks, again!

Sure wish DG had a setting so I could be notified when certain people post replies, LOL!

Linda, The guide I use for for when to plant to plant stuff is this one:
http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/lawn_garden/home_gardening/vegetables/home_garden_crops/louisiana+vegetable+planting+guide.htm

I also "sort of" follow the recommendations for the varieties to use, especially when I'm planting something new.

There's probably something similar for Texas, but Texas is so big and probably covers a couple of zones & weather types, from hot & dry to hot & humid. Check with the Texas Extension Service.

Here's a link that anyone can use to find planting dates, etc. for their specific location.

I saw where 13Turtles was asking where to get Worm Poop. It is sold in every garden center in Dallas, including some of the big box stores. Pretty sure I've seen it at Lowe's. I'll be glad to see if anyone would accept mail orders for it. I've gotta make a garden run today anyway and never hurts to ask. OR if anyone wants, I can buy some to send you. (Send me a DMail if interested.)

Now if only one of my neighbors had a teenager (or a DH) who would like to dig up my neighbor's yard so we can do raised beds.

Here where you can buy worm casting in our area. Heather is fantastic.
She used to come to the Coppell Farmer Market and sell her vegetables and products there. I was a regular customer for her "worm wine" which was gold for my vegetables.
Now, due to the heavy constructions on 635 Hwy, she goes to the White Rock Lake Farmers market (I think).
Contact her, she is a fantastic lady.
Happy gardening.

Ok ty to the fun police with too much time on there hands. Guessing since you cant garden, thats why your here trolling.

Thanks Drthor! Always need worm castings!!! :)

Just pulled the cucumbers, waiting on the next batch to start producing. Ghost chilis are still maturing, have decent size peppers, but they are all green. Fall seeds have all come up. Sugar snap, snow peas, bush beans, carrots, raddishes, broccoli. Peppers and Tomatoes are still putting out just at a slower pace now, cantaloupe are just now making melons. The boys have been excited about them :)

Badcat, are you referring to me? Sorry if you think I'm trolling. I'll leave and ask for or offer advice in other places.

BELLEVILLE, IL(Zone 6b)

I didnt see you ask for any advice but i did see someone putting people down for having a little fun, sorry! How are your gardens?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Tx_flower_child,
I don't think Badcat was suggesting you leave. We all poke fun with each other all the time over here, but not at the expense of losing a member.

We appreciate all that you bring to the discussion!

"The other thing that struck me in reading this thread (but - again- there were other things too) is that some of you ladies (?) like to laugh a lot..."

I especially like your laughing ladies, LOL!

Please, stick around, so we can help you figure out how to get a neighborhood teenager to build you some raised beds.

Badcat,
I didn't get the sense that she was putting people down for having a little fun...my sense was that she was joining into our fun, LOL!

I sure hope I'm right!

BELLEVILLE, IL(Zone 6b)

No I dont want to see anyone leave. Send those post to yourself and see how you would feel if you inserted your name in where others were. I like to laugh, I HAVE too!!! If you find your kids making chocolate cake in your toilet with your window scrubber...what would you do!?!?! I tend to laugh lol just saying!!

TFC, I direct seed everything for my fall garden because I'm too lazy to start seeds inside! LOL Makes the plants hardier and you don't have to harden them off either. :)
