FALL/WINTER Gardens 2014-15, Part 1

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

the first two containers i started them in are big enough to leave them in permanently. The washtub has Bull's Blood beet planted in.

And i planted the golden detroit in the giant white pot (my great white tomato that was rooted from a sucker in the background)

And the two containers that i planted seed into the other day (these are the ones that will be transplanted into the garden bed) and a maturing swiss chard plant thrown in the shot just for fun ;)

doesnt seem to be letting me post anything else! there was supposed to be 5 photos there, but i got an error message and only that one shot worked, something about errors with some sort of syntax or something or other (im definitely not a techie, lol!)

Uh, no, LOL!

BELLEVILLE, IL(Zone 6b)

Glad I found this :)...LOL@ bedpans

Brenda, Your about the same zone as me. What can I get away with planting for fall harvest right now? Iv got empty spots to fill in my beds :) Carrots for sure and were able to do beans and cukes again?

Becky you wanna try the peppers again next year?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

LMBO!! Between the fat batman picture and Linda's "bedpans", this has turned into the LOL thread!!

Badcat! Heck yes gonna try the ghost peppers again next year, and I'm putting them on heat from the start this time. Wanna get my hands on some Trinidad scorpion too just for the heck of it. How did yours fare?

Ooooooooooooooooh, you mean in the pic of my grow light stand.....you see the plastic, drawstring hospital garment bags, and the pans on the shelves, and, my goodness what else would you think they were but BEDpans, LOL!

Uh, yeah, those ARE my pans, LOL! But, they're KITTY LITTER pans!!!

I get them for $1.09/ea. at my local "Nothing Over $1 Store. They are strong enough to load up with plant pots and hold in one hand without collapsing. They're a bit smaller than a standard drip tray, but, I'll sacrifice size for strength.

Carrying a loaded pan in each hand, with peace of mind, is ....PRICELESS!

Hugs!

I started seeds last night (Wednesday, July 30, 2014) , finally!

►Arcadia Broccoli (10)
►Green Goliath Broccoli (5)
►Georgia Southern Collards (10)
►Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage (7)
►Brunswick Cabbage (4)
►Late Flat Dutch Cabbage (4)

I'll keep going later. I have room for 117 seedlings on my light stand. Once they get true leaves, they'll get moved from the warm room over to the cool room, to grow on for the next 6 weeks. Then, I'll start the second wave in the warm room.

Earliest 1st batch transplant date is August 27th.

Just started flowering last week, loaded with pea size peppers. Ill send ya some seeds :)

Thanks Badcat :)

Swiss chard plant nearly ready for harvest (the rain has weighed it down a bit, lol)

Also its that time of year again--the rain of a million crape myrtle flower petals, but hey their beauty is worth it.

The seed flat tray with the kale, chard and beets is springing to life

And the tomato that i rooted from a sucker is producing buds at the tip

And the beets have really been energized with this rain that we've had

My broccoli have 2 true leaves and they are ready to be potted up on a 4" pot.
One plant for one pot. I will just pick the best plants ... sure I had 200% germination on those seeds.
I am attaching also the Maria Thun's calendar.
Tuesday is a "FLOWER" day, all day (see the yellow color) = this is when I will transplant the broccoli. Broccoli is a FLOWER crop.
Happy gardening !

i am considering starting some of my autumn crop seed indoors in my southern window, while the books say to start them now, i still go out to occasionally find a plant that has been roasted alive by the sun and heat of the day, i figure if i can get them going in here in the cooler air, they will have a better chance when they go outside (all hardening off methods applied of course)

I started Wave #1 sowing with broccoli, cabbages, and collard greens on Wednesday, 7/30/14. They were up by Sunday, 8/4/14, (4 days).

I sowed two broccoli seeds in each ATP Deep Cell System (3-1/2") cell and, as of today, I count TWENTY broccoli. The cabbages are in yogurt cups, and there are TEN of them! I'm less concerned about the collards, cause I plan to grow PLENTY of those, anyway!

I don't snip off seedlings, either, choosing instead to divide and keep them all! THAT'S how the numbers gets out of hand, LOL!

But not this time! I'm finally going to COUNT all the seedlings as I divide them. When I get to 117, I have to stop! The last few seasons the seedlings have been too crowded, so I'm giving them much more space this go round. Fifty-eight seedlings in each room. More light and air circulation should improve the herd, er crop, LOL!

Can't wait for next month to get here so I can start sowing seeds for the cool weather plants like spinach, lettuce, kale, and the carrots. Maybe I won't wait to sow the carrot seeds...

Hugs!

By the way, this is the time to buy GARLIC bulbs at Cotsco or Sam's Club. At this time of the year they sell garlic bulbs from California and not China. One lb for $4 and tons of garlic.
Planting dates in the Dallas area : September 15th - October 15th.
Happy Garlic

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Drthor,
Thanks for the GARLIC heads up! Is there a particular brand of garlic to look for, or just look for the California packaging?

I can get my garlic from Sam's Club today.

Thanks, again!

P.S. Do you just braid and hang it, to store your garlic for use during the year? Do you ever mince any ahead of time? Of course, I guess that would be less than fresh, huh?

Gymgirl.....I'm just south of you on the coast......when do you set your broccoli and cabbage seedlings out in the garden? I'm fixing to start mine in the next few days but don't know when it will be cool enough to set them out without cooking them....Thanks.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

There is only one variety sold at Sam's ... I think. I like it !
One year I spent $40 from just a few cloves from the gourmet garlic place advertised by Baker Creek ... and I had a horrible harvest.
This garlic is a softneck variety and it is just fine for cooking ... and I am a great "Italian gourmet chef" ... plus is only $4 for tons of bulbs !
Yes, you can braid your garlic, but I normally hanged my garlic. This year I followed the suggestion of a DG member. I cured the garlic, then cut and left 2" of the stem on the bulb. I did store the garlic in paper bags in my dark pantry. So far so good.

I mince the garlic just before I cook for a better flavor.

Do not plant before suggested planting dates. Garlic bulbs don't like the heat very much.

jmc1987 you are funny

Happy gardening !

Hi, Texasbelle!

I grow the broccolis and cabbages indoors for approximately 8-10 weeks before a week of hardening off, then transplanting into the garden. Once they have at least 6-8 true leaves (sometimes my seedlings are almost 8-10" tall at transplant), they go out and can get established in the cool, but, before the cold.

From my experience, they'll only stall if they go out too soon. They really do better if they're set out when the weather has begun to maintain a cool temperature, somewhere around mid- to late-September to mid- to late-October. They'll handle any cold our southern climate throws at them, so don't worry about it ever getting too cold, LOL! Better to start the seeds a bit later. I don't mind having mine inside for that long -- especially if they don't mind it, too!

I have observed that my brassicas grow best in a spot that gets some bright sunshine (but not full-on, hot sun), and some cool shade. My best world is bright light and cool shade...

I have grown them in a bed running east/west on the southwest side of my yard. It's relatively bright from morning sun until around noon, then the sun is just about overhead and setting on them for a couple hours. Then, around 6 p.m., they're back in the shade. Heat is NOT their friend...fortunately, this bed sits along a wind tunnel, so even though there is bright light, the ambient air temperature across this bed is on the cool/cold side - perfect for the plants.

Last season, my cabbages did not do well, because it never got cold enough for them to properly head. Definitely a lesson learned with the cabbages. They NEED it cold enough to make those heads. Just like we draw a sweater around us in the cold, the cabbages draw their leaves around and make the heads -- cold is key!

Hope this helps!

P.S. Stay in touch with me on your growing schedule. I'll be succession planting for the first time, and hope to have seedlings ready to transplant in as soon as I take something out. I'll be sowing seeds roughly every four weeks indoors, and transplanting out every 8-10 weeks. With this schedule, I should be harvesting something every month from November to mid-March next year!

Broccoli and Cauliflower timeline:
8/6/12 Sowed seeds indoors
9/3/12 Potted up some that were ready to be potted up
9/17/17 Hardening off some
10/7/12 Transplanted 17 cauliflowers out -RB #3
10/13/12 Transplanted 11 broccoli out -RB #3;
10/13/12 Transplanted 7 green magic broccs & 6 caulis out -RB #2
12/03/12 Broccoli and Cauliflowers making buttons at 120 days from sowing

The picture below is an Arcadia Broccoli, on 12/30/2011, so you can get the time frame. It was huge! This broccoli variety is absolutely gorgeous, and makes HUGE (almost teacup saucer sized) side shoots. The leaves are a beautiful blue-green color, perfect for an edible landscape garden.

Linda

Thank you so much for the valuable information. This is the first time I am sowing my own transplants. I found some broccolini seed and want to try them along with broccoli and broccoli raab - I have never seen plants for them at any local nursery. Your experience with succession planting is also a BIG help. Thanks, again, for your help.

I really want to try the garlic from Gourmet Garlic Gardens. Not sure what kind to try, though.

http://www.gourmetgarlicgardens.com/

I still have elephant garlic bulbs from my harvest to plant, but would like to try something different. I don't like to purchase stuff from stores because it's been chemically treated and who knows with what.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Drthor,
I'm at Sam's Club. Is this the garlic? There's only one brand, and is from Florida...Majestic Foods...

Thx.

Softneck artichoke types do well here and our climate should be fairly similar. I have had good luck with Broadleaf Czech and Lorz Italian. Both store well for me for 9-10 months at 65F then are still quite edible but a little drier and some sprout. Other growers nearby like Inchellium Red.

I don't remember the garlic bag. I will buy any garlic grown in the USA, but not China.

Does anyone start asian cabbage or carrots indoors first? Or should I just wait and direct seed them? Something is telling me not to chance letting the bugs get them, but I don't want to mess with plants that don't like transplanting.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

i direct seeded my carrots, and will do so with my radish, everything else can be transplanted i think. i always sprinkle down a layer of sluggo plus after each sowing. (so at least the bugs wont be the perpetrators, lol). still too dang hot though for me to direct sow anything else down there. The carrots are sheltered a bit by the shade of the cosmos plants, but everything else i have tried down there so far has sun baked to death, even with my tulle sun filter roof, lol.
