Weather: Dog Days of Summer Part 2

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Heeheeheee, just make sure to get some sunscreen for your dome and you'll be fine as froghair Jeff! =)

It's been fantastic the last few days - low-to-mid 80's, partly sunny, cool in the evenings. I'm diggin' it! < =D

Quote from happy_macomb :
Muddy, by "swale" do you mean a trough that forms a stream when it rains and that funnels the rain water from spot A to spot B, or do you mean a depressed area like a rain garden that gradually soaks up the rainwater?

A trough. A landscape company built one recently that has made a world of difference in moving water across our backyard to the far side of our house and then down to the sidewalk.
I've decided I can't have all of the neighbor's water come gushing in where it does, so I need something to redirect it the instant it hits my fence line.

hmmm, is that holly too big to move? ;-)

Yes, definitely too big: It's about 12' high and 6' wide!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't like sunscreen so I just use a bandanna, much to my wife's chagrin. I think they look cool but she says I'm not allowed to wear one out unless I'm in yard clothes doing a project....LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha She's got her standards! Tell her Johnny Depp looks awesome in a bandanna
http://wallpaperist.net/wallpaper/1370.html
Well, I guess he's got a bandanna on, that's what I googled for.
( Who cares, its Johnny Depp....8^D)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Nothing like a wet bandana to keep your dome cool on a hot day. :-)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol...I'm a far cry from Johnny Depp though. I'm also a big fan of tank tops but she puts them in the bandanna category :-{

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--not to cause a tiff--but---If I ,may hypothesize---

Whats up with marriages where one has to live by the others rules?
Especially simple things like clothes and a bandana on your head???

She married you "as is"--for better or worse--and now you can't wear a tank top
(geez--it is 95* out there) and you cannot wear a bandana????
You are a young, good looking Dude...she "has you"--you are married--
SOOOO???? Where's the insecurity coming from?

You may want to examine her hang-ups re these things--OR--your need to be
compliant with them.... There has to be SOMETHING that makes her uncomfortable
about certain things--about YOU. WHAT?

OK...OK....I know this is opening a "can of worms".....just wondering
I would NEVER accept these kinds of "rules'--nor have I ever had to.

None of my business anyway.... I apologize if I trekking on fragile grounds....

Rats! ;-)

Heat and humidity supposed to be returning today...

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

The humidity was horrendous yesterday evening when I was trying to do a few things out in the garden. I lasted about an hour before I called it quits. Even when I left the house at zero dark thirty this morning it was like a sauna.

I think the humidity is supposed to let up a little by Friday and be nice for Saturday. If not, I'll just work outside in my bathing suit and jump in the pond when I need a cool off. At least Jeff probably looks great in a bandana and a tank top whereas me working in a bathing suit is a sight NOT to behold LOL.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL Aspen! you should see my grungy yard outfit! Mixed blessing that my 12 year old daughter is already embarrassed by me no matter what I wear--LOL!

Glad they are predicting a nice Saturday. I think my ankle is just about well enough for me to get out in the garden this weekend...

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol you guys are funny!

G: I don't really care about it that much. She just thinks it looks trashy to wear that stuff out in public, which I don't necessarily disagree with. It depends on the venue. Totally acceptable to go to Home Depot in a tank and bandana, not acceptable, IMO, to go out to dinner in such.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

well, thank heaven's Seq's marriage is not in jeopardy, LOLOL I suspected it was more the public VS private consumption of tanks and banadas! Please, if Library patrons could just put the Library into their list of 'don't dress like you're digging ditches" ( unless you really ARE digging ditches, cuz I certainly appreciate the honest hardworking laborer, sometimes they are on the road all day and need email, fax, directions...) category...

Hm, beefcake, we had our Hunky Josh, let's see Hunky Jeff in his tank top. ROFL And Terp, bet he's no slacker! We've only seen Terp in 'modest' polos and tees.

Darn aspenhill, that sounds so awesome. I envy my FL sister for that, she has a pool.

BGE ENERGY ALERT DAY- all you Smart Energy Rewards people, 1 pm to 7 pm minimize use and get the reward! We will run AC this morning and turn it off, and I will do some dinner prep too, and then finish it after 7 pm. We've been having dinner then, a lot, lately, anyway.

(hm, let's try to diagram THAT sentence...a lot lately anyway??)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha!! Sally, you're a hoot! I used to look better in a tank, in my punky early twenties but now I've gained 45lbs since then so not so much.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha, we're all older too so it's relative!

Ever look at the old Tarzan? He was beefy, bordering on porky!! Considered strong and many in his day.

Tanks really are not flattering on the average body. But on really hot days, getting all the 'sleeve' off sure feels cooler.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol, my rationalization is that it's better than no top at all. I used to run around the yard topless but modesty is needed these days since there's nothing to show off....LOL...also, I refuse to have 'farmer's tan'

TIme for this, once posted by donnerville:

"O Lord, grant that in some way it may rain every day, say from about midnight until three o'clock in the morning, but, you see, it must be gentle and warm so that it can soak in, grant that at the same time it would not rain on campion, alyssum, helianthemum, lavender, and the others which you in your infinite wisdom know are drought-loving plants - I will write their names on a bit of paper if you like - and grant that the sun may shine the whole day long, but not everywhere (not, for instance, on spiraea, or on gentian, plantain lily, and rhododendron), and not too much; that there may be plenty of dew and little wind, enough worms, no plant-lice and snails, no mildew, and there once a week thin liquid manure and guano may fall from heaven. Amen."

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Welll--Jeff--us women do not have the option to run around topless...
You Guys, at least, have that choice. A tank top is the next best option.
Hmmmm--is there a difference between a "tank top"--and a sleevless knit top?

I like to wear sleevless tops when out in my own garden,,bra optional...
Feels a lot cooler... but there is no one to ogle me here...

Besides at my age--I avoid sleeveless anything. Too much flab on display.....;o)

*************************

Sally--I was going to ask you about the BG&E Energy alert. This will be my first go.
I think I will go to the Mall or something....(not really)--being home for 6 hours w/o my radio on
or being able to sit here and check out DG. All this scares me....

What I also worry about is disconnecting all chargers and electronics.
--Can I just turn off my "C"? Or--do I need to unplug the power strip?

--If I pull the main plug on my TV--I may not be able to get it to just return to my channels
of choice. Comcast gave me a new "box' as mine was in the "ancient" category.
It is very different...

I was thinking I can spend a good amount of the time in my laundry room straightening
things up and going through some junk. It is cool down there..it's 80% underground..
Same level as my Shop. LOTS of work needs to be done there...

Would have to have both my shop lights on, though. how much electric do they use???
How much would a radio affect the score?

Overall--I bet I won't save more than $10--hardly worth the sacrifices.

Give me some suggestions, Sally.... before 1PM!!!!
Thanks, Gita

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Hopefully that liquid manure and guano aren't falling from the sky as you look up yawning...

Studley Flower Gardens!! You found my nursery start up in CA....I was trying to be modest by not telling you all but now you've found me out....

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Haahahaahaaa, you guys crack me up!!! Hey Studley, my Dad used to wear a bandana in the garden ALL the time, just like that (droool) pic of Johnny Depp.. only, Dad looked more.. well.. "Dad-like". ;) They really are great for keeping the sweat from dripping into the eyeballs, and letting a second bandana 'flap' hang down in the back keeps ya from getting to be too much of a redneck, HA!! < =)

I have learned from my well-experienced landscaping guys at work that wearing sleeves in this kind of weather is the smartest way to go, provided the material of your shirt is breathable. I have yet to graduate into long sleeves while working outside, but I do NOT go out in tank tops anymore. Besides the sun burning factor, it's nice to be able to feel the breeze blowing through my sweaty shirt and cool me off. (that sounds gross, huh?) ;)

Today is just simply downright brutal. I was out only for about 35-40 minutes to water a few things late this morning and in just that short time my hair was soaked ALL the way through like I'd just gotten out of the shower.. I actually wrung out a small stream of sweat - EEWWWWW!!!! Thank you Lord that I was off work today!! < =D

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol Speedie...I usually wear a sweat band under my bandana as the bandana is not enough on its own to handle the sweat. I have the heater on by my legs in the office right now. Hard to imagine how hot it is outside..

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Stick your little nose out there and check it out, I bet this weather is right up your alley! =)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Just did, straight up tropical out there!! Phew, I'm going to be down to a t-shirt driving home! I generally don't use my a/c in the car. I like the breeze going through my hair...

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Just the one, eh? Heeheeheeeeheee

I typically don't use my ac in my truck either; I'm a 'window open' kinda guy. ;)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I thought you were a girl?

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Haahahahaaa, I am a girl, just was trying to be as "tongue in cheek" as you were, about the hair. < =D

LOL Just love this. Thank you Donner for writing it and Sally for posting it.
Storms rolling thru the area tonight.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

GIta, sorry, I went to work in my airconditioned office (job#2) with sweater on...

REMEMBER you are already getting a monthly discount just for having the AC cycle.
Fluorescent lights use little energy, radio ditto.

Energy hogs would be anything that heats and cools= stove, leaving the fridge open, running laundry with hot water, running clothes dryer, using lots of hot water.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Donnerville's prayer is priceless!! I was thinking the other day that I'd like 1 inch of rain to fall every 3 days. We just had a very short but very severe thunderstorm, BTW.

About tank tops, looking slovenly, etc. I almost always wear tank tops outside (and tons of sunscreen) because I always wear sleeveless tops at work and don't want a farmer's tan.

I'm usually covered in mud or dirt during the weekend, and if I cleaned up every time I leave the house I'd never get anything else done! For the most part, I only feel free to look like a pig when I go to a garden center, Home Depot, the bird store or somewhere in the neighborhood.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally---

I ended up working in my garden almost 5 hours out of the 7.
Thank goodness for the shade in my back yard--if I even stepped out
further--the sun was instrabtly like 'frying" me.

I had a question re A/C and saving energy.

Sometimes I just run the FAN of the furnace. No A/C. It moves the air around nicely
all through the house. Sometimes, itfeels almost like a low setting of A/C.

I am wondering if that would be a low-electricity user??? Like any other fan?

G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Glad you survived! I came home and the house was 83, the deck must have been warmer but it had shade and nice breeze, so I chose deck for relaxation.

I'd say absolutely, running the fan only makes great use of the cooler downstairs and has low energy consumption.

Rumbles and a brief rain shower here

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

We had a brief Thunder and lightning rain here. Pretty hard--but short
in duration. Watered everything a bit.....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

False alarm on rain here the last 2 days. The humidity was so high we should have been able to squeeze the water out of it. We went to the river this AM to pull the boat off the trailer for a small job on the trailer. It was 85*F before we left and I was already soak through. Even on the river, it was so hot. We took a short ride as Holly has never been on the new old boat and even skipping along over the H2O there was no relief.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

We had a big fat rainy storm move through here starting at about 9:45 or so last night. Went to bed about 9:30 and kept hearing this far-off rumbling noise. At first I thought it was someone a couple streets over trying to start their lawn mower! (yeah, we have lots of "those" sorts of neighbors around). Then I glanced out the window and saw SO much lightning, as though God were up there flickering the flashlight on and off constantly. About 15 minutes later it was RIGHT on top of us, and it poured! MAN it poured!! .. I have no idea for how long it poured; as soon as I heard the first patterings of rain I fell asleep - I love the sound of rain to fall asleep to! =)

Ric, I was thinking about you 2 and the boat yesterday while I was out watering a few things... was thinking that being out on a boat right about then would be the only way (other than a/c) to cool down... guess I was wrong. Ugh! =/

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

We got some rain last night too, thankfully! Ric, I'm going to think rainy thoughts for you! Funny image of squeezing the moisture out of the air--I know exactly what you mean about humid days like that! :-b

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

We had a mega storm last night. The cloud to ground lightning show was amazing. Lightning was immediately followed by loud thunder. We got 0.73" of rain from it all. We may have gotten more but my rain gauge is partially covered by a Honeylocust. I should move it over to the other side of the deck this weekend so I can get better readings. It was truly one of a kind storm and it lasted for a long time too.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

wow, the only time I've seen lightning like that was during the Derecho 2 years ago. It had a kind of terrible awe about it...
