Weather Dog Days of Summer

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I didn't realize we had minks this far east. How interesting!

Jill, what are the tall lilies by your kitchen window? I have a lily that's supposed to get tall but it's only about 4 feet tall right now.

Have you all heard about the mini polar vortex next week? It's supposed to get unseasonably cool in the Midwest, and we might get a little bit of that chill on the East Coast. I'm saving some heavy-duty yardening for the middle of next week. :)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I saw something about that, SSG! Maybe we'll get some nice temps in the 70s? yes, sounds promising for garden work!

LOL Coleup. I hope the cloud cover cooperates tonight so we're all able to see the supermoon. For last year's supermoon, I saw only a little bit before it was covered in clouds for the rest of the night.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

It was so bright here last night you could walk about without a light. It was sweltering here last PM, so much so, I closed the house at 8AM this morning.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The lily with a stem like a tree trunk is an orienpet (aka OT or oriental-trumpet) hybrid. I'm not sure of the cultivar, although I might be able to figure it out. I thought I'd planted Leslie Woodruff there... but the outer part of the petals seems too yellow-toned for that ID. I've had both 'Leslie W' and 'Scheherizade' in the past, though, and they grew tall & sturdy for me. I think the OT lily Hart had great success with was 'Satisfaction'.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It was almost 100 here in Oregon today. Not too humid. At least not east coast humid. It is supposed to be hot for quite a few days here. We come out here in the summer to escape the heat and humidity of Joisey. It backfired this year.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jan I've been hearing about the heat in Oregon from my family. Hope you all have AC and are managing to stay cool!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

yeah, darn shame! Next week here will be 5 - 7 degrees below average days and night extremes, very nice, we'll all save electricity.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

They did have to get the AC running after we got back from camping at the lake. Good thing. Jeff couldn't fix it with his skill set, but he at least looked at it. A flux capacitor? I think that was the problem. Anyway, it cools down nicely at night. We have only run the AC in our RV once at night. During the day we just open vents and windows. We're not in it except to get something so the heat that builds up isn't a problem.

Jeff and son and a couple grandies are actually going hiking today, but over in the coast range so it should be cooler and shadier.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Glad they got it fixed. We spent a summer living in Oregon when my DD was 3, and the heat was *harder* to cope with out there than here, simply because AC was a luxury in homes & buildings rather than a necessity, so many places did not have it, and it was sweltering. Here, most people and businesses have it.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Fortunately, developers sometimes are forced to leave streams alone because they're in flood plains. A few years ago, some government idiots had the bright idea of building a highway off ramp through the middle of a flood plain in the Tysons area, and it took concerted public protests and petitions to get them to back down.

We have beavers in Wolftrap Creek; I'll keep an eye open for minks.

I can't take the heat for too long, so I had to get out of it and go to the kitchen for a cold drink! I'm glad to hear we're going to have a polar vortex.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Here it is around 90 and cloudy. Maybe it's good I'm stuck inside?

Muddy, you sure there weren't any big corporation/contractor idiots that were part of that general idiocy? ;-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

It sounds like you are having a great time Jan. Sounds like the Grandies are having a great time, too.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

It sure does sound like fun!

What a dog day. Addy's really dragging in this humidity and heat. Gita you know that big metal galvanized tub? It was full of water and Addy stood all four feet in it , to cool off. She barely fit! We have a kiddie pool but she doesn't like that- I think the bottom is too slippery.. She loves puddles and swimming but not that kiddie pool.

I got hot and sweaty in the yard, and can't see the sense of showering to go to the gym and get sweaty in class. Staying home, cooking, dying hair, chill-axing....

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Even though the World Cup is on they are getting ready to go hiking. We had some thunder rumblings earlier, but, after looking at the radar map they decided to go.

They have issued heat advisories for tomorrow.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey Muddy, speaking of beavers and idiocy, A couple months ago I caught a segmeny of some public television nature program talking about beavers. Seems some Bureau if Land Management/Forest Service types out in several of the Rocky Mountain West states have discovered an almost foolproof way to manage soil erosion and flooding on public lands:
reintroduce beavers and let them do the 'engineering'!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Very interesting, coleup!

Talk about timing: here is a link someone just sent me about the "off-ramp through flood plain and forest" issue I mentioned earlier: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/tysons-corner-road-plan-runs-counter-to-visions-of-a-green-city/2014/07/11/15df93a0-0771-11e4-8a6a-19355c7e870a_story.html

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Glad they finally (re)discovered beavers out there! It's always nice to hear about good solutions like that--LOL!

Muddy, my own cynical view is that city/county governments usually make decisions that try to walk a line between budgetary limitations and public outcry.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

This is so lame...there's a line of thunderstorms coming through soon but there is a hole right where we are :( Super lame.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

You're right, CatMint; that's exactly what's going on here. Hopefully public outcry can make common sense prevail once again!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I just need to say two things....

One--YES! I was outside watering all day. 9-5. The sweat was just pouring down my
face and neck. My top was wet all through and gave me chills when I went inside
for lunch. It was REALLY hard today! BUT--I am a trooper....

Two--Reading about all this Fungus---how many of you just LOVE mushrooms???
fried up with some onion...YUM...pigging out on a Fungus....they ALL are!

G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Seq sunlight seems to be your fate these days! ;-)

Good luck with the petitions, Muddy! Hope it works out.

Gita, that's a long time to be out working on such a hot day.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cat--
That is what i do EVERY day--all throughout the summer--water plants
all day every day I am working..... Whatever the weather is....Others do too....

There is NO options for personal preferences....or wimps. It IS my job!
I do it---I deal with it---and I suffer through it...never complaining...well, not too much!

I doubt how many of you can envision ALL the plants in ALL areas of Outside Garden
in the average HD being watered by just 2 people every day.

Today--Curtis (our SM) and his wife came to buy shrubs and stuff for their house.
There I was--soaking wet--a watering wand in my hand--and he says to me--
"What? NO HUG???" (he usually hugs me when he sees me).
was like--OH! OK! So--soaking wet and with a the watering wand in my hand--
he got his hug.

THAT is what we all like about him--he is so human--so likable--(BUT--Only I get the hugs...)
HE started it before he became the SM--b/c we had met before as he trained
in our store for Manager--and I love it.

It will be a sad day when he gets transferred. They do that---every few years.
I have been at my HD 16 years--and Curtis is my 8th manager. NONE top him!!!

I think I will, openly cry. the day he leaves....many of us will....

G.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hmmmm....beavers!!!!

Well they only got part way, because grandy daughter hurt her ankle, so they drove over to Cannon Beach where it was cooler. Only it was MUCH cooler. MUCHMUCHMUCH cooler!!! Cannon Beach is the location of haystack rock(remember from the movie Goonies)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Poor grandy!

Seq, did you get any rain? It was a total surprise to me here but I don't know how much fell.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

We got 0.16" here. Today might be a money day for rain. I'll have to wait so see how it all plays out. They're saying today and tomorrow anyway. Fingers crossed, sure would be nice to have some.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I had some crispy parts of the garden before last night, too. Got maybe .5

Another benefit of good soaking is that it draws air into the soil as it drains through- I have read.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

That's interesting, I didn't know that!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

And--once more--in the storm at night my BIG Brazilian Plume got blown over
(3rd time) and more branches broke off.

Bummer--as they all had beginnings of bloom buds on them.
Will pot them up....hope they root. G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We got about what Jeff got, at just over an inch down is dust. I was about 4 miles away 2 days ago and they got over 1/2" in 30 min. Yesterday same thing, storms all around and no rain here. It's hot here with 180 proof humidity, just walking about gets you soaked,
I think all this rain avoiding our gardens is a big government conspiracy to quench or hopes of a nice garden.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I must sleep really soundly--never heard any of the hard wind or rain...

On radio--this morning--they are talking heavy rains....high winds....
Possible T-showers with possible hail. Even heard the tornado word
casually tossed around...

I better hunker down my larger potted plants. maybe i will stash them in my
basement entrance stair well? In my shed? Nothing should fall over there...

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Glad for the rain last night, although it blew over my 7-foot 'Lemon Gem' sunflower! oh well.

LOL Ric--the government conspiracy thing was my first thought as well! :-D Hope you and Seq both get some good soakers soon.

Gita, I had not heard about the tornadoes and hail. Stay safe everyone!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol...gov't conspiracy!

Probably right though....the man is always trying to get you down :)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Haha Seq--when I think of 'the man' trying to keep me down, I think of big money corporate interests, not the government. But since I work for the government, I guess that's understandable! ;-)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Crazy thunderstorms rolled through here last evening just as it was beginning to get dark out. I sat on the porch with my kindle and enjoyed the fury. Glad everything I planted yesterday got a good soaking. Weather reports are calling for more storms over the next few days.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Hallelujah, we are getting a nice solid shower, I don't need to drag hoses this eve.

My pool will be full and the plants watered!

Cat: I think that any entity that tries to keep you down is 'the man'. Be that government, corporate interests, or otherwise.

Pretty pathetic line of showers and thunderstorms setting up on the radar. Hopefully it collects more moisture before coming to Lancaster.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Was 7 million degrees at work today with about 4 grillion % humidity. Spent all day in the greenhouse today (as well as Saturday), in permanent fungal-moist mode. I have mushrooms growing out of my neck now... it's not a pretty sight. I write this from my seat on the second shelf of the freezer, trying to cool off. Lord, PLEASE let it rain this evening!?!?!? < =)

Muddy... all I can say is WOW... "idiocy" doesn't even begin to describe the plans for that roadway!!! That's like saying "Hi, I have Diphtheria so I understand if you don't want a big fat kiss.... how about I just stand 2 inches from you and cough in your face instead?" Absolute lunacy.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie, I'm so impressed with your and Gita's stamina. I've decided that all weeding and yardening can wait until the mini polar vortex hits here on Wednesday. :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We have puddles! There is a very soft rain falling now, so I'll bet we are getting the soaking we needed badly. My tractor is out, so I'll be reminded by a wet butt, to be thankful for the rain for a few days. LOL

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie, sounds like an awfully rough day! :-( Definitely time to kick back with AC on full blast and an icy cold beverage in hand. All day in the greenhouse? Shouldn't you all be taking turns in AC conditions for health reasons??
