There was a piddly line of t-storms coming through yesterday but they all dissipated before making it to our house. It seems like the chances are much greater for today and tomorrow so it would be nice to get some water. If not, I'm going to have to bust out the sprinklers this weekend for sure.
Weather Dog Days of Summer
We are still dragging hoses, it's making me think of some more watering systems. This heat and humidity is too much too quick. I need a longer adjustment period.
Speedie: Be sure to take (and post) before and after photos! I'm really excited for you - it has been a long haul with those braces!
Longer adjustment period Ric? My oh my it's July 2nd...LOL! I love it, it's summa time and it's great. Heat and humidity bring it on!!
It is like a sauna today. It is not quite as bad as yesterday, or perhaps I am getting used to the summer weather. Thanks for the explanation, Ric, I always wondered where the term "dog days" came from. My little dog doesn't like the heat. He slept in today. He usually hops out of bed when I get up, but today, he didn't bother. He likes the a/c as much as I do.
It thunders, but doesn't rain. Typical for a Pocono summer. We are supposed to get some rain today or tomorrow. Time will tell.
The hummingbirds and baby frogs like the weather. I leave water for the baby frogs when I water my plants. I am thankful to have a hose connection at my house. I had to wheel my hose cart to the neighboring building to water my plants in the sanity gap town homes.
I was thinking of going swimming in the lake, but It was over run with toddlers when we walked by. So much for a relaxing swim in the lake.
Does it ever stop with the toddlers at the lake? No secret 'adults' area? Lol
Jeff, It's only been a couple of weeks since we had less than 60*F nights. I hope I'm around in 30-35 years to see what you say about Pa. summers. LOL
LOL Ric, I was thinking along similar lines and Jeff's youth, heeheeheee! Yeah, back in the day (she says, all hunched over her cane, peering over the rim of her spectacles), I could handle the heat and humidity no sweat (pun intended)... now a-days though, I leave that to the young whipper-snappers (who might that be!?). =P
I wandered outside for a minute today, saw that the 'mater and pepper plants are standing and not wilting, so I walked back inside and thanked God for the a/c. :)
Hahaha, fair enough :)
I've always been one to delight in the warm weather though. Maybe it will change as I age. I'll take the worst summer day over the worst winter day anytime.
Seq, stick to your guns! I kind of like heat and humidity, or at least I tolerate sleeping in it better than Mark and the wimps kids. But I am appreciating the AC right now.
LOL you guys! :-) I did my roll call this morning but this afternoon walked straight from the car to our nicely AC'd home, and am hoping that the thunder rumbles I hear in the distance turn into rain at 8 pm as predicted...
Oh goodness Sally, while working in the head/humidity is one thing (tolerable to me), sleeping in it is a whole 'nother thing altogether. I absolutely cannot sleep when it's too warm, Ugh!
I know, I sound wimpier than I really am when it comes to heat. If I can start out while it's relatively cooler in the morning, and STAY out in it as it gradually warms up, then I am A-OK. But the instant transition from A/C'd 75 degrees to 'EEEK IT'S HOT' is just too darned hard for me.
Catmint, I sure hope you get that rain that's predicted too!! I haven't heard any thunder rumblings around here, but then again, we've got the stereo on pretty loudly. ;)
I was looking for BGE info and found this.
www.greentechmedia.com/articles/featured/How-Utilities-Are-Using-New-Technology-to-Protect-the-Grid
the first few paragraphs were pretty interesting to me
Hm, breeze kicking up, clouds building...
Here's the part that worries me about that article... "and eliminating the need for 6,000 truck deployments...." In other words, eliminating work for 6,000 crews? Many other questions come to mind, all worrying. Yes, in the long run, the customer can end up being without electricity for a shorter period of time.. but at what long-run cost?
... and the clouds roll in...
Very cool article, Sally.
Speedie, I think in emergency power situations they call in work crews from neighboring counties/states, plus existing workers work nearly around the clock. I don't think targeting work crews more efficiently to restore power to customers more quickly means that anyone is out of a job. However, maybe it means those out of state/county work crews don't have to deploy here for as long, and can go home to their own jobs and loved ones more quickly! And the regular workers only have to work round the clock for 48 hours instead of a week, meaning they get to spend time again with their families, too, while the rest of us can enjoy our power. Plus, there is less loss of revenue among businesses affected by lengthy power outages.
I agree with Catmint. I am glad for reducing the huge cost of the brutal overtime those crews do. And the cost to US ultimately, in externalities (cost to repair hardware, loss to business, cost of crews ) which we all pay somehow.
Speedie, I know what you mean when you talk about the heat and humidity in the nursery! The heat inside those places gets to me, and I only have to put up with it as long as it takes to pay for my plants.
We got rain this evening, enough so that I didn't have to water. It must have been due to all the watering I did last night : )
We got exactly 0 inches. Again.
DC hit 98 degrees today!
UGH.
Seq, my father-in-law is in his 80s and still loves the heat and humidity. He doesn't even like to sleep with the AC on. And he still hates the cold!
Definitely an Ugh, SSG! Well, tomorrow they're giving us a *90%* chance of rain--maybe that will finally be the charm!
My 96 yr old MIL has the heat set at 80- 82 in winter. But its a dry heat LOL
Ew, I went out after dinner to piddle around. Boy did I get nice and sweaty. But it was fun anyway!
thunder rumbling...
And what's this about a hurricane, already? Mark said there's a cold front coming over, tomorrow, and it doesn't look like the hurricane is bringing rain to MD, VA, PA..
Getting rain here, exactly a week after our last one inch+ rainfall. right on schedule!
A cold front, yippee!!!! Imagine thinking that so soon after this past winter.
LOL Sally "but it's a dry heat". < =D
I understand about the linemen and power companies and all that... it's a double-edged sword to be sure.
We actually got rain last night. Awoke at dark:thirty to the sound of thunder rumbling and lightning flashes.. then awoke a bit later to the dulcet tones of rain pattering on the house. No idea what time it was, can't see the clock without my glasses on. ;)
I hadn't heard anything about a hurricane, ... already!?!? Yeah, I hear ya GQ, wouldn't think we'd be so happy with a cold front so soon after that winter we had! Cold drink, yeah, but not a cold front. I think this 'cold front' means temps dipping back into the low 80's. That's ok! :)
The storms were marching eastward and said to themselves, ooohhh wait, we don't want to rain on Jeff's garden, let's dissipate instead! Boo...what a let down. Hopefully today will be the money day.
How can someone afford to keep the heat set at 80+ in the winter?!?!
Sure would be nice to get that hurricane, oh well, the season just started so we have plenty of time to go.
Speedie, I wear a watch to bed with a light feature so I can see what time it is. We also have a clock that has a projector on it that can shine the time on the wall so that the digits are a couple feet tall.
Lol..SSG..I admittedly do appreciate an air conditioned bedroom to sleep but could care less otherwise. My bedroom as a kid was in the attic and it was always hot up there. We would put a window fan in after dinner to bring in cooler air and that was it.
As far as cold, I have gear for that. As far as heat and humidity, you can only get so naked. LOL
I do better if I start outside early and the heat builds. We don't super cool our house. 80*F is fine as long as it's dry and much better for moving in and out.
Good article Sally, I agree pin point application of power crews would be quicker and less costly. More efficient use of resources doesn't necessarily mean diminished resources but better service.
We got a small shower last eve, but not nearly enough. Suppose to be cooler with a high of 80*F tomorrow, that would be great we have a party in the mtns. and high heat there is brutal.
I found when I worked at Home Depot as the garden cashier that if you start out early you adjust to the heat and it's not so bad. I would even eat my lunch outside instead of inside with the AC. Now they have air conditioners in the cashier booths outside, the cashiers barely open the door to ring up your purchases. Wimps!
I guess it's like heating a frog in the frying pan by slowly increasing the temp.
Robin, My 80+ dad worked in patio at HD, in Florida and ate his lunch and possibly napped in his truck parked in the shade. He only went in to clock in and out, or a dash to the RR. Once home you couldn't pry him outside. His house was probably like ours, about 80. He did sit out but only in the evening and early AM, if the vampire bats, oops, skeeters weren't too bad.LOL
Haha...the first time I read that post Ric, it sounded like your Dad just at and slept in his truck all day at work...Lol It made sense the second time through though :)
He pretty much did take all breaks and lunch there. He lives in Fla. and hates A/C turned up high. I sort of agree, I take short breaks inside, but it's 80*F and feels so good. I erected a fence at his place a few years ago, I went out and did the tough stuff first. Like digging the post holes, then I would set the post, and later put up the fence. By 2 PM, I was all in, ready for a nap or a skip to the beach and cold beverage.
Nice! My Mom and Pop live in the Phoenix area and they usually try to get their work done in the morning. Although he told me yesterday that they were waiting until the afternoon to trim some plants outside. Perhaps he was joking...as it was 110 there yesterday.
Seq, I can't afford 80 in winter myself and don't want to. She is in a small apt in a building so her two rooms a few degrees higher don't add up to much. Mostly, she has no concept of 'thermostat', ( or what day of the week it is, or month, etc.)
I'm as blind as the rest of you bats! Lighted watch or cell phone are must have on my bedside
Ditto to Robin, and Ric, starting in the heat is better. Yeah, Robin, wimps! But those booths can probably be stifling at times too, eh?
RIc, I am ever grateful he dashed inside for RR....
The giants are just starting to play duckpins here... Seq I sure hope you get your rain.
Impressive thunderstorm here. We lost power. :-( so now fingers crossed that those smart meters work and we get our power back soon!
OOOH Catmint, I'm gonna watch out here, then, Most stuff hits over that way then sweeps across here... it sure is looking ominous now...love watching thunderhead clouds build and move!
Been watching ominous-looking clouds roll in and out all day, not a drop was spilt on my down this way though. It did rain last night, and I was glad of that.. hopefully more again tonight.
Yes Jeff, just like a frog on the stove; heat me up slowly and I will never know the difference 'til I croak. :)
I guess I should start sleeping with my cell phone right next to me, (so I can check on the time) 'cause even the bedside clock, 1 foot away, is too far to actually be able to see it. 1 INCH is more my speed. :)
It started pouring buckets at about 4 p.m., and is still coming down although gently. I think we've had about 1.5 inches so far.
On that heat & humidity issue: I can vouch for the fact that age can be a big factor in how much one can stand. I used to run races in the heat and humidity of summer in Georgia. Now, I have to watch it. I don't mind the heat at all, but even light gardening in it for too long makes me physically ill (trust me, you don't want details!).

Oh boy! Could you please ask it to head South for me? Thanks! :)
Anyone else who lives in this area lose power? We went out for dinner and the outage seems fairly widespread. SSG? Happy? Terp? Yehudith?
